This place was lovely! Staff don't speak a lot of english, but then i dont speak a lot of japanese, but together we managed to get any questions answered promptly! If you can swing the additional cost *definitely* do the half board experience. The food was phenomenal and the service was lovely! The onsen was lovely and hot, the minerals left my skin so smooth.

I think there could have been a bit more choice for breakfast.
Winter closure of the open-air baths "Shirakaba-no-yu" (Late December - 28 February) Due to the accumulation of snow, the open-air bath will be closed during the winter.

Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains.
Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains. Mostly tailored to skiers and snowboarders though, with the many hills and ski facilities. But it's also a lovely place for a brief visit if you want some relaxation and onsens. We visited mainly for seeing the Zao Snow monsters and relaxing at a nice hotel. Unforuntately the Snow Monsters had already melted when we were there, and only one cablecar worked going up the mountain, so there was a huge line.
The town is cozy with a few restaurant options. We did not ski and stayed for two nights which was just the right amount of time, as there's not that much to experience in the town, other than ski, visit onsen and take the cablecar (if it's working properly)

It's good for a few days of hitting the slopes and had a surprising number for eateries compared to some of the other onsen towns.
The juhyo (snow monster) is an interesting sight (depending on the weather) especially since you will have to go right to the top of the mountain to see it.
It has a night viewing session depending on the season for the juhyo also.
And if you're driving, Yamagata town is just a short 30mins drive down the mountain and you'll have more eateries to choose from.

I stayed in Zao Onsen in mid October and had a beautiful time absorbed in the energy of the mountains and blown away by the ‘koyo’ autumn leaves 🧡 In the off season, it proves a serene escape to soak in the onsens, and take in the clean air and stunning views on various hikes. I can only imagine how much fun it would be when covered in snow!

I booked for a group of 3 families.
When I checked in they assumed that the Japanese family is the primary contact. The hotel front refused my ID and address and INSISTED that the Japanese family should be the primary contact and address.
This is unacceptable considering that I am the one booking.
It caused a lot of confusion and uncomfortable to my group.
If you do not want foreigner to book the property then why bother listing it in the booking.com?

Interesting for its hot springs one can find almost everywhere and its location in a charming mountain are. The little town itself doesn't offer much and is rather boring. Few restaurants that close early at about 3 pm and hardly any shopping facilities. Fortunately, there is at least a small convenience store. The sulphurous smell of the hot springs can be noticed all around the area.

Staying at the Christmas Rose Hotel was perfect for hot springs ( onsen ) and also close to convenience store. The owners are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Free rides to zao hp town and had coupons for the four main hot springs there. Tatami mat flooring and Japanese type hotel. Perfect for relaxing away from major city type hotels. Peaceful time memories. I have videos on youtube also about it. Highly recommended!! Zao Onsen is an amazing place.
Talk about Ski in Ski out!!
I didn't actually realise when I booked, that this is completely on mountain accommodation. Absolutely outstanding.
Room was clean and comfortable, staff were absolutely great. Very helpful and accommodating.
Breakfast in the mornings had a great selection to fuel up for the slopes and I thought other meals were tasty and great value for money.
Catch the Ropeway and get picked up in a snowmobile.. how many places can you stay that do that!!
Wonderful stay. Beautiful Japanese-style room with a lovely covered balcony area with great views over the town. Exquisite food. Very helpful staff. Room was warm and well-equipped and the hot spring baths are open 24-hours so were never too busy. The hotel is a short walk from the centre of town, ropeway etc but this meant that it has great views over the town and to the mountains beyond. Shuttle to the bus station available.
This ryokan is absolutely lovely. The rooms are very spacious and clean. In addition to the usual amenities for an overnight stay the room included a tea pot and plenty of tea for our stay. The view from room was excellent.
The staff were incredibly accommodating and offers shuttle service to/from the Zao Onsen bus terminal.
The baths were lovely and there is a private one you can reserve with the staff at the front desk.
Very nice, traditional experience!
We were very surprised with the diversity of the breakfast. If you want to experience a proper Japanese breakfast, here is one place where you can do that very well.
The onsen was very pleasant too, but you might need to get accustomed to the temperature.
All in all we had a very pleasant stay here and we can definitely recommend!
Thanks a lot :)
Great location! Near to Ropeway 3, convenience store, sake museum, and onsen. Plus points for the delicious barbecue restaurant in front of the hotel.
The hosts Oraphin and Taka were very warm and spoke great English too. They had a lot of stories to share and it was such a pleasure to stay in their company. Coffee and tea were provided in the common area. Clean and well-kept place!
the onsen was clean and beautiful and the staff were very helpful even with limited English spoken (Google translate really helped!). as the hotel was up a slope, the staff was kind enough to drive us up and down when requested as we were travelling with an elderly and child and it was not convenient for walking down a snow hill.
Zao onsen is a beautiful town, a great place to go skiing but our stay was memorable thanks to the big kindness of Oraphin and Taka. They are such beautiful people, willing to help you and to make sure you have everything you need. We bring back home wonderful memories and we wish to come back. Thanks again!
A nice ryokan with a nice onsen. Very hospitable staff. The free milk/coffee/pudding service at the lounge is a nice touch, especially the fresh milk is very creamy and delicious. They served the famous Zao beef for dinner which was delicious. The room is huge and comfortable with all the amenities
the location is in the heart of Zao onsen. 5-10 mins walk to all three slopes. the host family is friendly and considerate. dinner and breakfast are delicious. very clean rooms. one of the public onsens is right across the street. I can’t ask for a better experience. will def stay here again!
The beautiful view from your bedroom high ceiling windows, along corridors, lobby abs breakfast venue is fabulous. Outdoor sulfer onsen is really good, but you have to walk pass thru snow, (hotel provide you a snow coat, boots and umbrella for you to use). Dining and breakfast are variety.
- The staff are very nice.
- It has its own public bath.
- the style is lake a Japanese home with tatami mats and a kotatsu, you have a sink in your room and a heater.
- it’s easy to get to it from the bus statio.
Great location, 5 minutes walking from the ski resort, 1 minute from public onsen, 2 minutes walking from the bus stop.
A lot of restaurants around.
The stuff are friendly.
The breakfast is really good, Japanese style.
The staff and owners are very kind and helpful. We went during winter where there was heavy snow, and they offered pickup and drop off from bus station to hotel, to onsen, to restaurant and Zao ropeway.
Enough parking space (rare in Japan)
Cosy classic furnished rooms; futon beda are ok for us big europeans
Very nice onsen and you can use for free the onsens of this hotel chain in Zao
