Murayama is located midway between Yamagata City and Ginzan Onsen. If you have a car it is very accessible and very cool to explore a slightly urban rural area. The train line means you can see more of the area if you lack a car, although I recommend you have one to be able to easily access sight seeing spots. There is a lot of rich history to explore and learn about in the area, as well as some awesome traditional style onsens to experience. There are the classic shopping areas if you are new to Japan and want to go to some pretty common chain stores, as well as some amazing hole in the wall restaurants to get some mouthwatering cuisine. It is a rather small area, so don’t plan on spending more than a few days there or you may run out of things to do.
