Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains.
Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains. Mostly tailored to skiers and snowboarders though, with the many hills and ski facilities. But it's also a lovely place for a brief visit if you want some relaxation and onsens. We visited mainly for seeing the Zao Snow monsters and relaxing at a nice hotel. Unforuntately the Snow Monsters had already melted when we were there, and only one cablecar worked going up the mountain, so there was a huge line.
The town is cozy with a few restaurant options. We did not ski and stayed for two nights which was just the right amount of time, as there's not that much to experience in the town, other than ski, visit onsen and take the cablecar (if it's working properly)

It's good for a few days of hitting the slopes and had a surprising number for eateries compared to some of the other onsen towns.
The juhyo (snow monster) is an interesting sight (depending on the weather) especially since you will have to go right to the top of the mountain to see it.
It has a night viewing session depending on the season for the juhyo also.
And if you're driving, Yamagata town is just a short 30mins drive down the mountain and you'll have more eateries to choose from.

I stayed in Zao Onsen in mid October and had a beautiful time absorbed in the energy of the mountains and blown away by the ‘koyo’ autumn leaves 🧡 In the off season, it proves a serene escape to soak in the onsens, and take in the clean air and stunning views on various hikes. I can only imagine how much fun it would be when covered in snow!

I booked for a group of 3 families.
When I checked in they assumed that the Japanese family is the primary contact. The hotel front refused my ID and address and INSISTED that the Japanese family should be the primary contact and address.
This is unacceptable considering that I am the one booking.
It caused a lot of confusion and uncomfortable to my group.
If you do not want foreigner to book the property then why bother listing it in the booking.com?

Interesting for its hot springs one can find almost everywhere and its location in a charming mountain are. The little town itself doesn't offer much and is rather boring. Few restaurants that close early at about 3 pm and hardly any shopping facilities. Fortunately, there is at least a small convenience store. The sulphurous smell of the hot springs can be noticed all around the area.

Staying at the Christmas Rose Hotel was perfect for hot springs ( onsen ) and also close to convenience store. The owners are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Free rides to zao hp town and had coupons for the four main hot springs there. Tatami mat flooring and Japanese type hotel. Perfect for relaxing away from major city type hotels. Peaceful time memories. I have videos on youtube also about it. Highly recommended!! Zao Onsen is an amazing place.
This beautiful hotel is in a great location. It only took us a 10-minute walk from the JR Station and a 5-minute walk from the ropeway station.
The dinner was superb, with a variety of delicate Japanese dishes and grill beef. The famous beef was so tender and delicious. We were so full and the staff offered us take-away dessert that we could enjoy later in our room.
Free shuttle bus service from Yamagata JR Station to the hotel could be reserved in advance. Great service!
The hotel is near to the bus station, which is very convenient to go or leave. But most let me surprise is that the houser could speak Chinese, English and Japanese very frequently! There is no problem to have a communication.
The room is very beautiful and clean. Only one thing let me sorry is the smell from the kerosene stove. You need to being used to it.
In next season, I might go again and hopefully I could get the same room from this hotel~!
This ryokan is absolutely lovely. The rooms are very spacious and clean. In addition to the usual amenities for an overnight stay the room included a tea pot and plenty of tea for our stay. The view from room was excellent.
The staff were incredibly accommodating and offers shuttle service to/from the Zao Onsen bus terminal.
The baths were lovely and there is a private one you can reserve with the staff at the front desk.
Oraphin and Taka (and of course the little one) are the most lovely hosts! Location is excellent and you are basically within a 10 min walk to all onsen and ropeways. One of the public baths is literally 20 seconds away! The space heater is also amazing and the first floor common space is always toasty :) Matsuo house is a must stay if you want a homestay-like experience in Japan :)
Before I booked the place I’ve read the comments. Mostly with good review. I wasn’t disappointed at all. Staff was friendly the place quite clean and close to the ski resort and onsen. Only 5 mins walk from Zao bus terminal. The breakfast limited but thats fine. My room was facing mountains and its beautiful.
Zao onsen is a beautiful town, a great place to go skiing but our stay was memorable thanks to the big kindness of Oraphin and Taka. They are such beautiful people, willing to help you and to make sure you have everything you need. We bring back home wonderful memories and we wish to come back. Thanks again!
The staff was very kind, as expected from a family owned ryokan.
The bath area is small, but you schedule your personal bath time.
Food is incredible, a must try when visiting Zao.
Location is near the main attractions, like the cable car is reachable by walking.
Lots of nearby onsens.
The Matsuo’s spoke English, Japanese, and Chinese among several other Asian dialects. They made a special effort to get to know each guest. They went above and beyond to help me with my ski rentals and luggage transportation to the airport. Such a lovely couple!
Superb customer service. Thanks a lot for help us to get on the bus on time and get to the cable car. Appreciate.
The room is big and clean, with a fantastic room view.
There is onsen in the hotel for 24 hours.
Love it so much! Highly recommended!
The staff and owners are very kind and helpful. We went during winter where there was heavy snow, and they offered pickup and drop off from bus station to hotel, to onsen, to restaurant and Zao ropeway.
1. Nce room
2.Good dinner (japanese set
3. Close to Zao Rope way station (5 minutes walk)
4. Can book private onzen (around 2000-3000 yen per hour for 2-4 people)
Great location, just 1 min walk to the cable car station and 30s walk to ski-rental shop. The hotel provided the rental discount coupon, only 2500 yen per day!
