We received a friendly welcome and shown our room which was perfect. It was spotless the bed was comfy and had a great shower. The breakfast was cooked to order and was perfect. Tea and coffee you make yourself, some people may not like that. The owner took over at an unfortunate time, just before covid, but has done a wonderful job building a very successful business.

Location was perfect for what we wanted and the accommodation was clean and comfortable.
Although we didn't meet the hosts, they ensured everything was explained.
I would recommend it to anyone who wants a quiet, peaceful break.

The Rose & Thistle is the hub of Alwinton, it's a small village and the locals use the pub, it's nice to see and chat with. We went with a plan of the places that we wanted to go and see which I think is worth doing. There are plenty of country walks and cycling looks popular in the area.

Alwinton was a wee hamlet away but with a good car and good roads was a very useful place to base ourselves. We had never been to Northumberland before so we were out and about to see visit major site such as Holy Island, Etal and Ford, Hadrian's Wall etc. We found the roads and driving very easy. A good breakfast set us up for the day and we only snacked lunches and enjoyed finding places to have dinner on our way back - the Tree-House at Alnwick was great. Being National Trust members was a help with expenses but there were also a good number of English Heritage sites.

The friendly staff, and such a good place to use as a base to explore and walk. Not crowded and the setting is idyllic. A great place for all age groups if you want to enjoy nature. Roads are narrow but easy to drive, use a sat nav though.
Rothbury is about 10 miles away and well worth a visit. Cragside house is a must if weather good.

A lovely old house with similar dated furniture, fixtures and fittings (very old walls and windows - no double glazing) set in beautiful countryside. There is a campsite next to the house, which is run by the hotel owners. Very friendly staff. Excellent food at very reasonable prices. Less than an hours drive to two beautiful castles, Alnwick and Bamburgh.

We loved everything about it!
We loved everything about it! We only stayed one night as we were en route for Scotland. The views could have been amazing, but we arrived at dusk and the weather was misty and drizzly next morning so the view was obscured. The accommodation was very comfortable, especially as we had exclusive use of a warm and comfy living room with satellite tv. The three bedrooms are upstairs, which may be difficult for elderly or disabled people to access, though the rooms are large.
Alwinton is a little off the beaten track and the roads are winding and sometimes narrow, but it was well worth the effort.
From the moment we arrived, we were made very welcome. We really enjoyed the hospitality.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Both rooms (7 & 8) were well equipped, comfortable and warm. We all enjoyed our stay for three nights. Breakfast and evening meals were excellent with good menu choices
We enjoyed the live music in the bar.
The hotel location is remote amongst lovely scenery.
Be prepared for limited mobile phone signal or Internet access.
Its a wonderful place to stay, unique
The breakfast was very good, the location is remote but grounds are extensive. The building is fantastic with some parts very old. The Corona virus has obviously taken its toll on the hotel and i am sure this will get better. The owners could not do enough for you and was made to feel very welcome.
Quirky the building is very old and the furnishes suited the age of the hotel.
The inside of the building has lots of different area I.e an old wine cellar which is now for private dining now maybe. The food was all freshly cooked and the cook was lovely and friendly.
The hotel was lovely and was huge and had plenty of character .The staff and owners where very friendly .The food was home cooked my partner loved the game pie breakfast was lovely and the surrounding area was beautiful. We have booked up again in March with our child.
Last hotel before crossing the border. Room was clean and well appointed with an excellent and modern en-suite bathroom. Manager and staff were very friendly and helpful. This is an excellent place to stay when visiting the beautiful and remote border hills.
Wonderful tranquil location... Amazing staff, especially the young girl who helped around the hotel...
Breakfast was spot on, piping hot and nothing was too much trouble..
Would definitely go back... X
This property isn't in Alwinton it's in Byrness. Great for me, I know the village and knew before I travelled. The property is lovely. Don't go if you specifically want Alwinton!!
Lovely old building, rooms in need of updating and service sometimes slow (hard to find staff e.g at breakfast) but all were v pleasant. Nice atmosphere in hotel bar in evening.
Location was very nice and hotel looks impressive with a nice large garden. Staff was friendly and helpful. Clean sheets, good water pressure and a bath. Toiletries provided.
