Hotel Ichinose, hotel in Yamanouchi

Located in Yamanouchi in the Nagano Region, 3.1 mi from Jigokudani Monkey Park, Hotel Ichinose features ski-to-door access and a ski school.

Cozy hotel, right by the Ichinose Family ski area. The staff is absolutely amazing, 100% focus on making your stay pleasant. We went there for a ski trip and it was really convenient. The public bath is great for after skiing, and both dinner and breakfast buffets were excellent, with many good quality choices.

On just a 5-minute drive from Yudanaka Station, Wafu-no-Yado MASUYA features beautiful Japanese-style rooms, hot spring baths and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms boast a private outdoor hot spring bath.

We stayed at a regular room and a one with the private onsen. I recommend spluring for the private onsen. It's a night a day difference between the two. The regular room was still great tho. Very roomy by Janpanese standards.

Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya, hotel in Yamanouchi

Only a 10-minute drive from Snow Monkey Park, Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya offers simple Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi.

We stayed at many ryokans on our trip. None came close to Yamazakiya. The host family are friendly beyond belief, always smiling, always helpful. We got a free pick-up from the train, drop-off to the train and round trip to the snow monkey park. The place is cute, we had a huge room with fluffy, comfy tatami beds and a sitting area. Everyone got yukatas to wear around the house. It's a small place with two private onsens and we were easily able to book both for an hour for our group of four, giving us the chance to try two different rooms. We had messaged ahead to book dinner (good English spoken), a vegetarian option was no problem and my, what a treat we got. It must have been 10+ little courses, fine dining at its best. All around, highly, highly recommended! If you enter through the front door, don't forget to take a stroll out the back door - it leads straight onto the village's main street, filled with many cute, ancient houses.

Hatsunoyu, hotel in Yamanouchi

7.4 miles from Ryuoo Ski Park in Yamanouchi, Hatsunoyu features accommodations with access to a hot spring bath. The air-conditioned accommodation is 1.7 miles from Jigokudani Monkey Park.

Location is superb being in the heart of Shibu onsen at Yudanaka. Also free pick up and delivery to the station and the Monkey Park. Some good restaurants within walking distance. Being a local Ryokan, has key access to all of the 7 public onsens which I used. What a treat. Just strolling around town in Yuakata provided is fun. Owners were very hospitable and there was also an onsen in the Ryokan.

Might be better in winter, but in spring only thing to see was monkey park, and that only takes a few hours ( mostly travel time) as it isn’t very big. I was of impression it was a whole mountain, but it is just one small area you see the monkeys from. I’d suggest staying in nagano which was nice, and coming to Yamanouchi for a morning.

While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys, it wasn't what stood out to me about the area. The snow monkeys just have too many tourists to be truly enjoyable. Yamanouchi has beautiful mountain views, charming winding streets with quirky decorations, and onsen hopping among different ryokans is something to look forward to. If you look behind the main street, you'll see many stairways leading to many shrines. We had dinner at a sushi restaurant ran by an elderly couple, on traditional tatami floors. It felt like eating at someone's house, and they absolutely stuffed us with delicious sushi. Two nights would probably be the best to fully wind down.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields. Need to have better maps (in English) available for the runs. A (live) board showing which lifts and runs are open would be great, prior to entering the areas. The snow was amazing!!!! Restaurants were good however the area appeared to be directed at locals (Japanese) rather than tourists. We had to do a lot of work to find somewhere to eat. It would be great to have some public onsens available in the area.

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park...

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park was the absolute highlight of a trip filled with highlights. Specifically we stayed at Onyado Hishiya Torazo, and loved everything about it - the room, the food, the staff, and the oh so relaxing onsen! We made the mistake of only booking one night and the short turn around combined with outside temps down in the low 20’s (F) meant we never did try any of the public onsen. Trust me - two days here is the minimum! Snow Monkey Park ended up being another highlight (and between my wife and I, we have about 1,000 pictures to prove it!). Before going we were concerned that it might seem contrived at best and a bad situation for the monkeys at worst. But they were absolutely there of their own free will and happily making use of the large onsen on a cold winter’s day. Get there early - we got there about an hour after opening and wished we’d been an hour earlier. It started to fill up about 20 minutes after we got there. Here’s the weird thing, and the only downside - and I don’t quite know how to explain it. The town was basically closed! And we were there Jan 26-27, a decent snow had fallen a couple days earlier and a light snow fell the morning of the 27th. I thought this would be big tourist season, but we barely saw another sole in town. And those few we did see were almost all tourists out taking pictures in their yukata. This made for a very quiet morning, which was great. But we had planned to pick up our luggage at the ryokan after visiting the monkey park and meander through town stopping to eat, drink, or shop as we made our way to the train station. But nothing was open so we caught an earlier train and ate in Nagano while waiting for our Shinkansen.

The Ryokan Biyunoyado was just fabulous. They have shuttle bus to and from station. also to the snow monkeys. We were late and they returned to station to collect us. Onsens were great. The food was amazing and plenty of it. Japanese style room was very comfortable and beds made up when we were at dinner. Definitely stay here when you come to see the snow monkeys. it’s the best.

Its a great spot for visiting the snow monkeys and a quick snow board at Ryuoo Ski Resort. A walk through the older Shibu Onsen town is also fun for people who like that. We went to three different restaurants in the town and they were all good. The negatives were that the roads and paths were slippery with ice, so bring appropriate footware if visiting in winter (although your hotel might have some). Almost all places were cash only.

The onsens on site are phenomenal. While I did the 9 public onsens around town, I looked forward to coming back to the ryokan. The accommodations were comfortable and perfect for our needs. It was spacious and we slept very well with the weighted blankets. The hosts were very attentive, the food was excellent, and the personal touches were very much appreciated. Loved the origami that is gifted to customers. The detail and attention required for the origami also felt emblematic of the overall vibe of the ryokan.

The location of the accomodation in the small and quiet town of Yamanouchi was so enjoyable. I also LOVED my room. Everything needed was provided and well decorated. You even have a space with table and chairs in addition to low typical japanese style table and cushions, and a sink and fridge. There are two onsens in the basement and you get a kimono to spend your time. Staff is super friendly ! Don't be surprised to get to shower next to the onsen since there are no showers in the rooms! ;)

Even though hotel not that very far from the train station, but good thing is they allocate driver for pick up the guest which I like very much. On my arrival, suddenly heavy snow and very good have shuttle. The hotel also arrange free shuttle to Snow monkey resort. The onsen is superb with indoor and outdoor. The food is nice too. We have a very good experience! Even though staff may speak little English, but they are polite! Highly recommended!

The staff is tremendous. All fluent in English and super helpful. I had a mild cold and they even got me some meds so I wouldn't have to struggle at the pharmacy looking. The room was comfortable being a ryoken, but for western guests it will be an experience compared to a normal hotel. The town is quaint, very few speak English but are always helpful and definitely warmer as you drink with them

Yes, it is a dated hotel. However, the value, location, friendly staff and nightly dinner buffets more than make up for it. Conveniently located across the Tagamagahara lifts and near the bus/shuttle stops. Hotel will also aid with your Yamato/Ta-q-bin delivery/pickup needs. We booked a private bathroom room and it was very roomy with enough space/storage for 4 of us. Would stay here again.
