I really liked Otaru, even though it is small and doesn’t have too much to see. It’s really just the main shopping strip and the canal. There are a few museums and some spots in the mountains (there seems to be a ropeway that is poorly advertised but would have been perfect) but that’s about it.
It’s really quite a charming place. The streetscape and history are both fascinating, and the food great - especially ankake yakisoba and kaisendon. I do think it would be an absolutely perfect place to end a trip and unwind for a few days before returning to reality.

A lovely old port town with many original buildings being repurposed for tourism - dining and glass making.
Compact size makes walking around easy but in winter could be snow bound.
Lots of great places to explore old Japanese culture and dining and drinking experiences.
Lots of fresh seafood...many diners around the actual fish market shop with all types of Japanese cuisine... tempura...sakitori...sushi..shashimi...hotpot ...ramen etc..and absolutely amazing bakeries / patisseries and local ice cream and dairy products. Even wineries have opened up.
And even more if you are a winter sports person with ski resorts on the town outskirts...seaon just closed when we were here.
All this a simple train ride from Sapporo Airport -- ok maybe an 2 hour ride...not bad if straight off the plane from Sydney or Seoul or Tokyo into the Sapporo airport.

After coming from the big city of Sapporo we loved the smaller town of Otaru. Planned on just doing a day trip but changed to stay overnight. Wish we had taken a day off Sapporo and added it to Otaru. No lights on the canal as expected but we still loved Otaru. Easy to walk to everything and a lot to enjoy.

We went during winter.
We went during winter. It is a small quiet town and most shops close around 5-6pm. So good to settle dinner early. As a small and quiet town, the place is generally quiet and peaceful after dusk. There is nothing to do after dusk and travelers can take a stroll down the Otaru canal and enjoy the night view.

Give the canal a pass, especially if you have been to Europe. Very underwhelming. Take the local train one stop to Shioya and hike the Shioya Maru-yama. It is about a 6km round trip hike up a local mountain with great views. Take the same train to Yoichi to tour the Nikka Whiskey Distillery and sample great whiskeys in the restaurant after the tour (book reservation for tour ahead of time and remember everything shuts down around 16:00).

The hotel: Great location, staff service facilities and everything you need to support your comfortable stay, a little cosy but expected in the country.
The town is lovely and has now become my most favourite town in Japan, want to be here more, it give me relax, local people are also very nice.
Oh my goodness this place was a dream. The staff were incredible, the food was superb and the VIEW. I was literally almost moved to tears watching the sunrise over the ocean in the open air bath. Yes, the decor is a little dated but you get a taste of luxury for half the price you would somewhere else, so I certainly didn't mind. It has a sort of old world charm a la Grand Budapest Hotel I actually quite liked. Not to mention Otaru is a beautiful town. The two days I spent here would have made the trip to Japan worth it on their own.
*The Owner staff was really accommodating and friendly.
*They have a free shuttle service from the time of your check in date. The staff will meet you from the Otaru station.Very convenient for new travelers.
*The staff also gave me a quick tour of the different Tourist Attractions within the area. The staff even gave me recommendations to what places that I should try to visit.
*The Hotel is very near to Mt. Tengu. The location is very accessible for those who want to try the Tengu Ropeway, Ski etc.
A very cool room, designed in a Japanese style!
The room is clean and tidy, with a comfortable chair to sit in after walks around Otaru.
In the morning, we were treated to a buffet breakfast.
The breakfast is very rich and diverse for such a price.
The owner is very polite and willingly answered questions about the city and accommodation.
The hotel itself has a smoking room, an onsen bath (and a shower in the room).
The rooms are spacious, equipped with jaccuzis and every single item one needs for a comfortable stay is there. The hotel has great ocean views from the rooms and beautiful mountain views from the corridor hall. Every staff I encountered were very polite and professions (thank you to all of them). Everything was clean and the breakfast was very delicious & served directly to your room. I hope to stay here again sometime.
I came with my family and we booked a room for four for two days . The room was very clean, amenities very complete and all work well. Staff at the reception and housekeeping were very pleasant and very helpful, we really enjoyed our stay and glad we chose this hotel. What came as an additional surprise was the perfect location for shopping and food, there were so many interesting things within just a short walk!
I only stayed for one night on my way to Sapporo but I found it to be a very beautiful hotel with professional, friendly staff. I had driven there from Hakodate so it was nice that they had parking right next to the hotel, and a convenience store right behind that. The room was very modern looking and the beds were comfortable, with a decently sized wall-mounted TV and drink vending machines on two floors.
The Hotel Nord, I adored. The staff were so polite, it was such a pleasant delight. And when my pass-card failed, immediately the staff availed! Breakfast choice was vast, and the food really first class. The wooden traditional decor is also to be adored. I'm sure I'll stay there once more thanks to the staff, the food, the comfort and decor!
Dormy Inn Premium in Otaru offers a fantastic onsen experience, a standout feature in a city not typically known for hot springs. The added perk of complimentary snacks and late-night ramen significantly enhances its value, making it a top-choice accommodation for my 15-day trip, providing an exceptional balance of comfort and affordability.
- Location! This place is the best at the heart of Otaru attraction street.
- The house is spacious with complete facilities. Big bathroom with bath tub. Very convenient and comfortable to stay.
- Parking is convenient.
- We will definitely stay here again every time we come to Otaru.
The room was great, very large ., lovely view from the room. Linen changed daily, a novelty in this day. Breakfast great variety of options, to suit most cultural tastes.the hotel 5 2 stops fromOtaro but trains every 15mins. And cost about $2.50 each way. Wasn't a problem for me.
The hotel is only several hundred metres from the train station and comfortably within walking distance of the canal, so the location was excellent.
It was spotlessly clean and comfortable.
We would recommend it to all visitors to Otaru.
The facility is very good, nice room, good public area, public bath etc, it can easily charge more especially in a tourist town like Otaru. With the charge at a much lower rate than other hotels nearby, it was a very good bargain.
Our favorite hotel! Location is perfect along the canal. The view is beautiful. Coffee shop in the lobby is delicious. Easy to get to from station. Comfortable and spacious rooms and onsen to relax at.
O`popo is within a quick walk of the Canal distrcit of Otaru. More than that, the hotel is more like staying in a guest room at someone`s house and very cozy.
The space of the room. It's not easy to find hotel rooms this big in Japan. I was surprised by the size and the beautiful view from the room to the sea.
