Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyThis is a budget Ryokan, so not the most comfortable.
The Ryokan is clean, affordable, and convenient. It's also close to the main station.

ColombiaStaff tried to charge us not once but twice with a higher rate vs the initial price in booking, stating that city taxes were worth first 600 and then 500 yen, when they are 200 yen per person per night.

United StatesThe place is a little bit hidden and off in a side street, as well as a bit of a walk from Kyoto Station (not a big deal unless you're super exhausted). The room heating did not seem to work as I toyed with the remote multiple times and the room stayed very cold every night to where I was wearing my coat to sleep. I actually had a hard time sleeping on the futon as well, as it was not as comfortable as I thought it would be (first time). Also the owner might be quite reclusive, as a lot of the interaction (via keys to room, payment, luggage delivery) was meant to be done with very minimal contact.
I think the room was beautiful, it was my first time seeing and feeling tatami mats, the floor seats, and the paper sliding doors. It was a nice size as well and could have worked for 2 people as well. It's close to a McDonalds, a FamilyMart, a museum, and a temple/shrine.

BelgiumWe arrived to a very abrupt demand for money from a man.! Not the welcome you expect as the very first words. Had son with me who is fluent Japanese. We had to scramble together 800 Yen. No receipt given. Went upstairs to the room to find an envelope with a demand for 2000 Yen marked on top. Next morning early, a woman stood in front of us whilst trying to leave and demandEd money again!!!! We used Google translate to explain we had paid 800 Uen the previous day. Next morning again, same woman entered our room whilst I was getting into the shower. Later she demanded money yet again. We explained again we had already paid. The room was OK, except for hair on the tatami and shower floor and in sink. Reading other comments, I think we were lucky. I don't like giving bad reviews but booking.com MUST MAKE IT CLEAR full payment is not taken in advance and you'll be pestered for further money. It really spolied our stay.
Location, chosen as near Gion but also because we held Kansai Thru passes and the Keihan railway line is almost next door which is on the pass.

Irelandthe sink was coming off the wall lol if you have big luggage it can be kind of hard to bring it up and down the stairs but not impossible
staff were very friendly and helpful! I'm not sure if they speak English, but if you speak Japanese they're really nice 👍 the location is also very handy it's walking distance from a lot of temples and museums and theres also a train station like 2 mins away as well. the price is extremely good imo especially for the amount of tourist attractions nearby! I got a room for one person so it wasn't super big, but I found it was quite spacious and had no trouble with luggage etc.

Polandvery poor English of the owner - and little problem with communication
it was the first time in my live when I stayed in such a room, typical Japanese style - tatami, law table, possibility to sit on the floor, sliding doors - in such a room you can feel like a geisha in Gion, bus stop nearby so the localisation also was nice, although it was quite a small room

United KingdomThere could have been more attention to detail with regards to the cleaning of the bathroom. The access to the room was quite difficult as the stairs were quite steep and narrow. Maybe provide larger slippers for bigger feet.
The location was excellent, walking distance from Kyoto Railway station and just around the corner from a local station. Well situated for good bars and restaurants. The room was comfortable and I particularly liked the provision of a laptop and computer station. The staff were very friendly but spoke very little English. Although small the bathroom was adequate with a plentiful supply of hot water.

AustraliaThe owner charged us more than what we booked the room for in Booking.com. She didn't have good English and the only thing we is understood that she said when we argued the inconsistency was "Kyoto City tax". It should have been included in the booking price. Booking.com should look into this because it's not right. It believe it's not the first time it happened with this property. Also, the microwavevon the room would not work.
The area is in the old part of Kyoto. The streets were filled with restaurants and traditional style houses. It's also close to public transport and grocery stores.

BelgiumI wanted to experience sleeping in a Ryokan. Unfortunately for me this was not the best choice. Apparently I dont really like sleeping on something hard, although it's better for the back. But I think for people who do enjoy this, this place is just perfect. Also a good location, not too far away from Kyoto station. 15-20min walk. The host was very friendly although we did not speak the same language, we understood eachother just fine.

United KingdomThe tatami smelled like pee. Check in and check out were simply picking up and returning a key to a basket, I only saw the housekeeper 2 times. One morning she began hoovering outside my room at 8am. The place had a slightly unsettling feeling.
The room was a good size and the bathroom was quite clean, the water was hot and clean towels were provided.

AustriaUnfortunately, the room wasn't too clean, there was hair both in my duvet and in the bathroom there was residue of someone shaving. It seemed like it was a one-time cleaning mistake though, as the rest of the hotel seemed very clean. It did feel a little uncomfortable though.
The rooms had everything you would expect in a ryokan, both rooms were very spacious and had private bathrooms and a nice balcony. The AC and Wifi was working very well and there was even a laptop in the rooms, I didn't use it but I expect it to be for the guests. Also, the location is great, near a tube/train station and quite central generally.

PolandIm not sure the bed sheets were changed. My bed smelled of feet, and the Ac was full of mold and was leaking water which made a puddle on the floor in the morning.
Nice expierience of a Ryokan, seen the staff lady only when we were leaving. She let us leave our suitcases which was nice. Paid 8000 yen for one night which wasnt a bad price.

FranceOverall it was good but I was expecting more of a ryokan vibes. This looked more like an inn with Japanese styled bedrooms (the bathrooms are more western looking).
The room was ok, the host lady let us keep our bags in the reception area after checkout, which was very nice. Location is good, 15m walk to JR Kyoto Station or a short bus ride away. Also close to Gion and to the Nara line in case you want to come and go on the same day.

SpainDoor of the room. It does not work properly and I was locked in my room for 30 minutes until I found the problem. I sent them a message about this issue. I hope they repair it soon. If you use room 203 and they have still not repaired the door, pull the door handle upwards as shown in the pictures. If you push it downwards, it does not completely open.
Location: it is very close to Gion district. Just 15 minutes walking.

HungaryDuring our stay in Japan, we wanted to try ryokan, that's why I chose this accommodation. A little bit far away from Kyoto station (15 minutes' walk with luggage...hmmm) located in a tiny, quiet street. After booking this accommodation instantly got a YouTube video how can we reach the accommodation. That was really nice. The room was spacious and clean. We had one of our best sleep in this room. :-) Perfect place to discover Fushimi-Inari shrine. :-)
