Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

FinlandI understand the building is old and traditional, so not expecting modern-day insulation. However, hearing the next-door neighbours talking & drinking until past 1am (and hearing them tinkle every time they went to the bathroom) was a huge minus for me. Otherwise Kiyotaki Ryokan is amazing
the kaiseki breakfast was absolutely incredible. our room (river view) was stunning and the amenities were great, the staff was absolutely lovely (especially when helping with the yakutas) and the location was absolutely superb - right in the centre of Kinosaki. THE best night's sleep I've had in years (well over a decade), we roasted ourselves in the amazing hot springs until the very last opening minutes (11pm) and couldn't wait to do it again first thing in the morning.

United KingdomNothing, this was a 10/10 stay!
Excellent stay at Kiyotaki Ryokan during our cycle around Lake Biwa. The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming. The rooms were spacious and clean. The bath facilities were also superb. Highly recommend both the dinner and the breakfast - the food was fantastic! We would definitely stay here again :)

GermanyThere are some bars located close by and they might sing loudly in the evening. I just closed my window and wasn’t bothered much by it though. It’s probably best to join them if you aren’t tired like I was.
The Ryokan is located pretty close to everything, Hikone Castle and Hikone station can be reached by foot in about 10-20 minutes, restaurant, convenience stores, etc. are also pretty close. The family running the Ryokan was very very friendly and accommodating to me. Everything has been explained to me, but I also speak Japanese so mileage may vary. The bath was very nice and Japanese style. Everything I needed like Toothbrushes, shampoo was available. I liked the room, it was a Japanese style tatami room with a comfortable Futon bed.

JapanThis was probably the best accommodation I had so far. It is true when they say - the further you go from the big cities, the more sympathetic and kind people you meet. I was very skeptical about my stay in the ryokan, as the pictures were not that promising and the price was quite low. As well as the city of Hikone is not that big (probably it is a small town area). But when I came in the evening after a full-day trip, I saw a very well made accommodation, exceptionally clean and a host, who met me with a very warm greeting! He showed me all of the facilities and we had a nice chat. I should admit - it is very important when you are coming late and plus to that you are alone. Later he offered me a dinner and I was more then amazed by how tasty and big it was for that price! I had 5 or more dishes (do not remember exactly as there were a lot), prepared on a beautiful tableware. I really felt like I was home. The lobby area was probably repaired - as it has nothing similar with the photos from the booking.com. Now it has a very clean and light colored design. It was visible from the first sight, that the host treats the hotel as if it was his own house, greeting everyone with open arms and heart. I would dream to meet such hosts in Kyoto, Osaka and other big cities. But so far, I met the best host in Hikone town. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the host-just found his name now. Hiroshi san, 温かい歓迎をありがとうございました。

United StatesBed was a bit hard for me but that’s different for everyone.
Host was super kind and willing to work things out with me when I wasn’t aware that this is the cash only residence. He even took me to the station too. The maps that he gave were super helpful!

LithuaniaThere was a weird smell on the second floor in the hall, but apart from that everything was really good.
The owners were really friendly and the location was pretty near the city center. You could also rent a bike if you need one. No problems with the internet connection and the room was really clean and even had some complimentary green tea.

JapanReally great place to stay! The owner is so warm and welcoming. He went out his way to prepare vegetarian food for me, it was a simple meal with good ingredients prepared with care. Really delicious. Not many places in Japan agree to do this so I really appreciated the gesture.
