The tranquility created can only be experienced on location. We took a long hike with Sinmar Tourism which proved to be one of those days in your life you will never forget. Our tour guide, Salim who is from the area shared so much information with us throughout the walk and I would recommend anyone taking such a hike to go with a guide. The track was marked but we learnt so much from Salim's local knowledge and he ensured we were safe throughout the 8 hours. The Alila Hotel is a great secret getaway!"

Last but not least: location. We saw someone complaining that this place is "uphill" and difficult to reach. Probably it came from someone who does not understand how this city works. Muscat (and its weather) is not very friendly to pedestrians and you're effectively supposed to be driving around in a car no matter where you have to go. That being said, from this hotel it takes only 20 min walking to get to the suk in Muttrah (the old city) and from there you can take a bus to visit the old Sultan palace. In addition, down the road there is a big mall/supermarket, 10 minutes by foot or less."

"Me and my husband stayed for one night in this camp, which is a small sistercamp of the Oryx Camp with only 5 tents and situated 1 km further in the dunes. The Desert Nights Camp and Oryx camp are signposted from the main road at Al Wasil and are easily reachable by 4x4. You can call the Sands Dream responsable to pick you up at the Oryx as it's not easy to find (pass the Oryx camp, go up the hill, make a sharp U-turn and park next to the camp). We did it ourselves and got stuck in the end because our tyres were not deflated.
We were the only guests as the season came to an end and really loved the experience. The caretakers were very friendly, the tents and bedding comfortable and the serenity was great. We had dinner at the Oryx camp and the contrast was big with a lot of tour groups and concrete huts. After that, back in our camp, they lighted a fire just for us. For the real desert experience with private bathroom and nice beds, go for this camp."
