“We got a nice spacious room with a fire place and a bath tub. The staff was very courteous and always willing to help. Breakfast and dinner were very good but the latter a bit too expensive. The garden and the trails on their grounds were a perfect place for birdwatching. We saw a lot of hummingbirds there. We also booked a Quetzal tour via the reception. Melvin was a wonderful guide. We started early in the morning at 5:00am, drove up the road and were able to spot two male Quetzals. What a wonderful bird! Later on Melvin showed us some more birds on the premises of our hotel like wood quails. He knows exactly the place where to find each species. So we really can recommend the hotel and the tour. But take care to be an early bird, otherwise you might miss the Quetzal!”

“Truly excellent food (more Euro than Tico) - which is ideal, since other dining options were very long uphill walks away. (San Gerardo is NOT a tight "village" or town, but rather a series of lodges interspersed with a few private residences stretched out over several kilometers of very steep rough roads). Family-run: the young staff is mostly from family, and has very good English skills. the son, a Birding Guide (Achneil??) was truly excellent - yes, we DID see Quetzals! (but had to start his car-tour to find them at 5:15am...) And staff was very accommodating over the phone to describe how to get there by 2-hr public bus ride from San Jose, meeting us with lodge-transport 4x4 at bus drop-off; a 45-min trip in, for $10 each - good deal. Best location in SG deD for 1 hr walk to the waterfall, which amazingly splashes THRU rocks, and has very safe railings/steel-bridges to view from.”
