“Stayed for five nights with my son - very pretty location close to the tiny little town, started by Brad Johnson (no relation!) 27 years ago and built up over time using local materials in total sympathy to its environment. Three delicious meals a day prepared by their excellent chef using local ingredients - meals are seated ‘family style’ whereby guests sit on a few big tables. This was a little unnerving at first but turned out to be one of the highlights of our stay as we met lots of interesting people from different countries - many fascinating discussions and debates were held during our stay! We went primarily for the diving which was led outstandingly by Kike, the dive master, who was very safety conscious, friendly, energetic and knowledgable. The visibility was great and we saw many, many varieties of fish, coral and turtles, including a 6m whale shark! If you want to explore this pretty and remote part of the Costa Rican Pacific coast, then I can’t think there’s a better place from which to do it. Thanks team!”

They clearly want guests to have a pleasant stay. The location is a short walk to the east of the main section of town, so was quiet and back enough from the road to avoid the dust. “First of all I would like to thank Josue, Teresa and the rest of their lovely family for making our stay exceptional! This is a tico family run business, so your money will go to local people, not just another foreign corporation. The lodges are stunning and very private. They have a relaxing decking area with chairs, table and hammocks. The room itself was very big and had lots of useful shelves/floating tables. We had a mini fridge/freezer in our room, which was handy to keep our water and beer cold. The bathroom was connected to our room and had hot water. Although the lodge had a rustic feel, it was very comfortable with many sockets and even strong wifi. There were three options available for breakfast, we only tried the typical tico breakfast and pancakes, both filling and delicious. The grounds were very well maintained and full of wildlife, we spotted loads of animals just chilling on our deck, or walking to the restaurant. The family who own the lodges, also run the nearby restaurant El Tortugo, which was also where we had breakfast. This restaurant was the best value for money in Drake Bay and also incredibly high quality. While we were there it was rated the best in Drake Bay on Tripadvisor. It was fun to eat while overlooking both a river and the beach. We enjoyed spotting the resident crocodile Pepe and the many birds and vultures on the beach. The staff was the highlight of our trip, we spent many hours talking to Josue about life in Drake Bay VS life in England. Teresa also kindly made us some sandwiches to take on a hike with us one morning. We extremely recommend you book any tours or excursions with them, as we made the mistake of using a local tour operator based on Tripadvisor reviews. It turns out that all the tour operators in Drake work with each other and they will merge groups of tourists as and when they need, so it's better to book with your lodge instead, as you will receive better communication and service.”

“Sweet spot run by very very nice extended family and the wonderful Envilio. We were picked up by Henry at the boat which arrived from Sierpe and taken to the property. We rode into the property on the back of an ATV driven by Eric. The resort area is pristine and beautiful in every way. Our cabin (Trogon) was on a little hill and was spectacular in its interior and its little wrap around porch. I was worried about the heat but the ceiling fan and windows made for just right. Best thing on the property for us was wading up the stream to the spectacular waterfall and jumping in. They made our Corcovado tour arrangements for us and fed us that morning at 5 and got us to the boat we needed to take for the tour. Spectacular staff of family members. Food/coffee was delicious. Deep in the jungle you will feel cared for and safe.”

“Beautiful room & bathroom. Huge sliding doors on to a large balcony with spectacular views. The hosts Helen & Steven were lovely & really helpful. They organised trips for us. Steven dropped us off where ever we wanted & even took us to a local beach & showed us a place to swim, with monkeys in the trees. They are such a lovely couple, from the area too.”
