Hot tubs were amazing, bed was comfortable, good value for money, amenities in bathroom were nice, location was good. More backpacker than lodge but overall was really nice.

The chalet was cosy and the grounds were nice. We didn't actually see the staff but they left clear instructions. Definitely had more character than a motel room.

Everything was decent for a small town with limited options.
Romm size was OK, the back was nice with all the greenery.

Nice self contained unit with private entrance, comfortable bed and furnishings, kitchen and dining table. Twenty-five minutes to start of Tongariro Crossing Track and just a few minutes to Okahane. Fresh fruit, excellent muesli and breakfast essentials included. Friendly and courteous owner made sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

We re-visited the Chocolate Eclair shop after a number of years, now under new management, eclairs still amazing. Nice town with the accent on it's access to the snow fields. In the winter season the town would be buzzing but in April very quiet.
Our fish and chip dinner was very disappointing in spite of glowing internet reviews, wouldn't recommend. We should have asked a 'local'

Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner.
Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!!
Left after checkout on the 3rd day.
The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it.
Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling.
We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice.
we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats.
Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea).
Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer.
Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.

Ohakune is a nice stop on the railway between Auckland and Wellington. I was there one day and biked the Ohakune Old Coach Road. I could have stayed one day more and done hiking in the Tongariro National Park or done more biking. A problem is the distance (2.5 - 3 km) to walk between the railway station and the new town center.
Extremely helpful staff - very friendly family feel to the motel. Accommodated all our requests.
Room size was excellent for us. Bed was very comfortable. Large bathroom - ideal for families or groups of friends. Spa bath was a bonus and would be great in winter after being on the slopes.
Location ideal for walking into town or going on the nearby trails. Great views of the mountain.
Quiet stay despite the many other residents.
This was a great choice for a stopover on a long drive. The location is excellent, the staff very friendly and helpful, and the room immaculate, with a lovely view of Mt Ruapehu. We had all the facilities needed, and everything was clean and new. We also enjoyed the fact that it was off-season, so nice and peaceful, and superb weather. We weren't expecting luxury, nor a basic lodge. This was better than expected.
We loved this place. The staff were so welcoming and thoughtful - an excellent B&B experience. Rooms were comfortable and lodge area was very comfortable. A delicious, home cooked breakfast was included. Finally, they place has a number of animals on premise and our hosts were very kind to let us pet some of the animals including, sheep, alpacas and a few Maine Coon cats!
Very peaceful setting just outside of Ohakune’s Main Street. Lovely garden with the two rivers (awa rua) burbling in the background. Just the right size for a weekend stay, and the spa was a huge bonus after participating in the Ruapehu Trails festival. Chris was friendly and chatty, and made sure we were well settled in.
Frankie and Hugh's felt like home away from home.
Marlene and Wayne were great host and made every effort to make us feel welcome and comfortable. We found the property clean, spacious and well maintained. The breakfast was good and we very much enjoyed our stay at the property.
The unit and facilities were beautiful and cozy. Loved the outdoor space, although the wind and rain made it difficult to utilise throughout our whole stay. The scenery was also wonderful when we could see the mountain through the clouds. Very nice place, would stay again.
The Gables B&B is both very spacious, well equipped with a small kitchen, and super cozy! If you are hiking in the park nearby, this is a great place to stay. The star gazing at night is also fantastic since there is so little light pollution!!
Location was good. Good it has everything you need. Full kitchen, bathroom and laundry and seperate bedrooms. Would be good to know there was the option of your own private spare or slightly more comfort and upgrades in different chalets
Perfect location at the Raethi/Ohakune junction. Really friendly and helpful staff. Treat yourself to a spa after a days hiking/cycling/ski-ing.
Drying room was a bonus
Plenty of off road parking at the rear of the property
The room was a lovely size with a spacious sitting area. It was fantastic having a beautiful big deep bath to relax in. Comfortable bed.
Reception staff were very friendly and helpful
