The breakfast was outstanding. The host is a fabulous cook. We enjoyed the garden and the porch and tranquility of the surrounding woods. The host was very welcoming and thought of everything for the comfort of guests.

Public bathroom needs to have better attention & be checked more often.
Some shop owners are friendlier than others & they make you feel unwelcome in their shops. Most of the shops are welcoming though.
Restaurants in the city itself are ok. Over priced & not top notch. However, there are wonderful restaurants right outside of the city that are wonderful & food is exceptional (The Lakeside Restaurant.

Long waits for lunch in restaurants.
We had a very bad experience at Meritage Bistro. The owner and manager were extremely rude to one of our group who ordered crab cakes that turned out to be too spicy to eat. Worst treatment I have ever seen in a restaurant. Will never go there again!

Too crowded in July.
Too crowded in July. We had a fantastic dinner at Lakeside Restaurant, an excellent lunch at Mountain Fresh Grocery and a great breakfast at the BlackBear Breakfast & Lunch which is new in town. Their food and service is superb. Next visit we will come early in the Spring or in the Fall when it isn't quite as crowded, but being crowded is a good problem for Highlands to have. :)

Highlands is a very unique place; a mountainous rain forest.
Highlands is a very unique place; a mountainous rain forest. Beautiful lush trees, flowers, and foliage. The water falls are breathtaking as is the drive up to Highlands. The town has a feel of privilege and most things are quite expensive. Our meal experiences were very good but get reservations IF you can. Food is pricey. Make sure and drive around and see the spectacular homes in the area. Please note that Highlands has a rain shower every day. Carry an umbrella everywhere.

Over the fourth of July weekend, so it was very crowded. We had to wait everywhere to get a meal. The visitor center was closed when it was supposed to be open, so we had trouble getting tourist information. The Smokehouse is great, but we also had a long wait for our food. The shops are high end. The historic village was interesting, and the flowers are gorgeous everywhere you look.
I travel frequently and always seek out historic inns because I love the quaint atmosphere and uniqueness. From reading reviews of the Highlands Inn, I suspect there are different levels/types of rooms because our visit did not meet our expectations. Room 45 (or 46) was like nothing I had read about in the reviews or seen in photos on the web.
The balcony was lovely and your employee, John, whom I only spoke with on the phone the day before arriving were the best part of our experience.
The kitchen was lacking and not user friendly. The living area had comfortable seating. The location was good in that it was near Highlands. The cleaning crew arrived after our 4:00 check-in but then did a good job. It was awkward to hang around while they were cleaning and making beds.
We took our dog on his first road trip and we picked this hotel because they seemed to cater to dog owners and their pets. Do they ever! Great hotel and staff. The rooms were large , clean and well furnished. Excellent experience .
