The estuary and Beach are excellent, good walking and bird life. Only downside is total lack of a decent place to have dinner. Mr Grumpys carry out fish and chip shop was the best on offer. It was recommended that we go to the yacht club which is well located. The woman behind the bar was hostile and bad mannered. The food was truly awful, it was very busy with locals but they must go for the company and cheap burgers as there was nothing else to recommend it.

    Interesting history.

Interesting history. Great new Wildlife Foxton Trust in main street offering guided tour of NZ’s less seen small creatures such as geckos, skinks, and Gallaxids. Excellent museum/library and walking trails along the Foxton River Loop. Trip to the Foxton Beach Estuary to visit Boating Club and view outlet of Manawatu River is worth the extra drive.

We arrived around 8 pm and everything was closed.

We arrived around 8 pm and everything was closed. We were told of a bar that might be open and it was but the only thing that they could rustle up was a bowl of wedges as the kitchens closed at 8 pm. Foxton is a very small town that closes down entirely at 8 pm so much better to stay in Levin, in my opinion.

FOXTON IS A SURPRISING LOCATION WITH ENTHUSIASTIC LOCALS ENJOYING A QUIET LIFE. THE TOWN HAS MANY OLD WORLD CHARMS BUT A MARVELLOUS WINDMILL AND MODERN MUSEUM/LIBRARY. THE BEACH IS ONLY A FEW MINUTES DRIVE. THE MAVTECH FILM MUSEUM IS MARVELLOUS. THE FLAXWORKS MUSEUM FILLS OUT MUCH OF THE LOCAL INDUSTRY HISTORY.

Foxton is not big, so if you are staying for any length...

Foxton is not big, so if you are staying for any length would also need to explore Foxton surrounds. Foxton is historical, and has an amazing history for flax milling, and has a strong connection to the Dutch, so windmill included; some oldy worldly buildings still exist, nice river board walk. The Dutch Oven Café was lovely with a cosy atmosphere, and good coffee. Although I did not eat, they had a good selection of food and many people appeared to make this there 'go to place' to eat. Quite a few Dutch tourists, obviously making that connection.
