Agia Roumeli Hotel, hotel in Agia Roumeli

Right outside the exit of Samaria Gorge, Agia Roumeli Hotel is steps from the beach.

We visited in mid October and the hotel was quiet, very comfortable and the staff were attentive and helpful. We paid extra for a room overlooking the sea and it came with a small balcony which was well worthwhile. Breakfast was amazing. It was served in a lovely beach side restaurant and included yogurt & fruit, a cooked breakfast, pastries, fresh orange juice and coffee. This hotel was a highlight of our holiday. Thank you!

Artemis Studios, hotel in Agia Roumeli

Located 60 metres from the beach of Agia Roumeli. The air-conditioned studios of Artemis have an open-plan kitchenette with seating and dining area. Each is equipped with a fridge and cooking hobs.

Wonderful peaceful location with the most welcoming, helpful and gracious hosts, Athenia and Eva. Thank-you. We feel very fortunate to have stayed in your comfortable and spacious studio apartment for a whole week. The beds were oh so comfortable! Excellent location for all the walking and exploring we did. Lovely stony beach nearby with crystal clear waters. We hope to return one day. It really was a little bit of heaven! We also ate twice at Artimis restaurant and it was one of our favourite places to eat out of all the restaurants in Agia Roumeli. Well done to this lovely family who are working hard to give those who venture to this remote and rugged place, such a wonderful time.

Agia Roumeli is a small village, which mainly accommodates those who visit the Samaria Gorge. Access is either by foot from the gorge or by boat from other parts of Sfakia region. It is definitely recommended to stay in Agia Roumeli after visiting the Gorge, as it is a quite demanding hike and some time to rest and relax is much needed. Lots of nice restaurants and cafes to choose from. People are warm and welcoming, and the Agia Roumeli beach is also lovely.

In May, after ferries leave, a very sleepy, romantic place to be in. Next day, while travellers from Samaria arrive, a bit crowdy village :-) The atmosphere is very nice, great to experience, a great spot to stay after your Samaria walk and maybe even a bit longer!

Agia Roumeli offers activities for both sea and mountain lovers, and good, Cretan food based on local products. It should thus be considered as a destination on its own and not just a transfer area after exiting the Samaria Gorge.

Wonderful town, away from the big crowds.

Wonderful town, away from the big crowds. Crystal clear blue waters with great swimming and snorkelling possibilities. 2-3 decent restaurants, which in combination with having a small supermarket and our own kitchen was ideal for up to a week. The town is crowded only for a few hours per day when hikers come down from the gorge. Me and my partner immediately felt at home and decided to stay one more night than planned. A lovely little gem that I’d love to visit again.

The beach has black sand, so is too hot to sit on or walk on...

The beach has black sand, so is too hot to sit on or walk on, and the water is not always clean, depending on the wind direction. Agia Roumeli serves more as an exit or entrance point to Samaria Gorge, which means that most tourists are "one-time" visitors. So related services are overpriced and of poor quality. Which is a pity, because it is a very nice village, that could be worth staying a couple more days.

Samaria Gorge is outstanding as usual, even in late October.

Samaria Gorge is outstanding as usual, even in late October. It is worthwhile to hike from Agia Roumeli to Agios Pavlos and back. The most beautiful path in Chania, in Crete, in Greece, in Europe, in the world. Friendly people everywhere and amazing sea after the gorge I didnt like I paid for mini bus from Samaria exit to the Agia Roumeli town and there was no receipt. If this business is public, they should include the cost to the Samaria ticket, if is private they should give receipt. People should not feed Kri Kri wild goats.

Possibly the only truly family tavern in Agia Roumeli. The best part - they got rooms! I enjoyed a delicious meal, and a sensory experience that I dreamed of for years. The silence and calmness of the evening complemented the aromas of the fresh dishes, served near the beach, at one of their few tables, the view from the room terrace. The attention and discretion of the restaurant owner, Mr. Nectarios, who offered me as a gift two small bottles - one with olive oil and one with brandy. Thank you very much!

A warm welcome from Eleni on arrival and a nice cold drink. Our room was extremely clean and comfortable, with a sea view. Good location, just a couple of minutes walk from the harbour. Agia Romeli is a peaceful haven, once all the walkers from Samaria Gorge have left for the day. People are friendly and it's worth staying a few days before and after the walk, it's a place for relaxation. We look forward to returning and staying at the Panorama Rooms.

The bed is very comfortable, I’ve never seen such a clean hotel, and the staff is very accommodating. Everything was so relaxed, and the only bad thing I have to say is why no one told me that I should come for longer ;) We also had dinner and breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant and it was very fresh and delicious, there’s really no reason to go anywhere else. Also, the view from the rooms is simply priceless!

It’s right at the beach, in the center of town, beautiful taverna, cafe and guest house covered in vines and so welcoming. The room was big and perfect for our family of 4 adults (could have been 5) with a balcony and view of the water. the owner Nikos was so helpful and friendly and the dinner and breakfast were authentic Greek and delicious with lots of variety. Was hard to leave!

We were honestly very lucky to have found this gem. The owners were amazing, they use mostly local food (like tomatoes, fruits, meats and cheeses) and are willing to do some extra steps when it comes hospitality (like helping with the luggage from the ferry). The view from the dining area is just perfect. And the private beach is idyllic. Would visit them again for sure!

Joseph as a host was amazing. Friendly, gave us really good advice for our next trip. The view from the room was simply the best. Right at the beach, with a view of a nearby port. It was spacious with a big balcony with a place to hang your wet clothes from the beach. And there are two nearby! It was a steak for this price. Love it!

    - super friendly host and all tavern staff - furniture quality way above average - excellent position - Agia Roumeli was super quiet, relaxing and not crowded at all (I would say less than 50 tourists scattered around the whole town, during the evening... maybe we were just lucky)
