The team were amazing, Karen with a warm welcome. Ronnie for a spot on breakfast. Nicole the hostess was fabulous. Cameron and Adam made sure our glasses were not empty. The food was truly delicious. Location is beautiful and the rooms were very clean and well presented.

Though breakfast was not included we had plenty of self service items like fruit, cereals, bread, croissants left for us and replenished every day which we thought was a wonderful gesture.

Stenness is a small village that has several Neolithic sights close by. There are fantastic standing stones which you can go close to. Also there is a fishing loch. The village has a petrol station with a shop. You really need a car to get around mainland Orkney. Stenness is situated 3 miles from Stromness where there are several shops and supermarkets

We usually had evening meals at the Merkester Hotel which is nearby. Definitly recommend this place. We had a lovely walk in the little wood at "Happy Valley". Philip told us about it. Other walks at nearby Yesnaby cliffs and Scara Brae beach which are nearby. Quaint little streets at Stromness where we got of the ferry.

Stenness is not far from Stromness on the road to Kirkwall, but nothing's far on Orkney Mainland. It really is an ideal focal point for your exploration of the islands.
There's an hotel and a shop/petrol station, plus an ice-cream parlour.
We ate in various places and would recommend - for lunch - Sheila Fleet on the East side of the island and the Birsay Bay Tearoom on the West. Both very busy. For dinner, we enjoyed excellent meals at the Ferry Inn in Stromness and the Merkister Hotel near Dounby.
Check out the tours - the ones we joined were 1st Class.

This is the heart of Neolithic Orkney - Maes Howe, the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar are the headline 'must-see' monuments but there are other less visited places too (Unstan Cairn was fascinating). Not to mention the peace and quiet, the wildlife and stunning views. Gerri's Icecream was ace too! It's only 5 mins drive from Stromness and about 20 mins to Kirkwall so you get the country escape with all the amenities you need within close reach. There is a bus service but it's best explored with a car.
