This review is more about Lewis and Harris, Sandwick is a small suburb of Stornaway. It has an interesting memorial to HMS Iolaire. We spent 4 nights on the island. Although the weather was pretty awful, the island is lovely and we spent a fair bit of time touring Lewis and Harris. The Butt of Lewis is nice and there is a lovely walk to Eoropie bay with lovely sandy beach. We are interested in birds and found Red necked Phalorope, GND, Red throated Diver, Golden Eagle, Guillemots, Fulmars etc. Take the drive across Pentland Road it is lovely and good for birds. Sadly we didn't really have raptor weather (lots of rain). Stornaway is a bit limited - if you want to dine out book well ahead as there aren't many places and they fill up quickly. We enjoyed the Boatshed at the Royal Hotel for dinner. EVERYTHING closes on Sunday (including most of the petrol stations so beware).

Sandwick was pretty quiet but it was just outside of Stornoway which was good enough for us as the property was nice and cosy. Most of the sights we went to see was out with sandwick, more stornoway and further afield. So I’m not reviewing sandwick. The property location was fine for us to travel to and from what we wanted to see

Book your meals in Stornoway in advance, busy even on a Tuesday. Also make sure you don't try to pack too many activities into one day, if using local buses. They can be few and far between, although they arrived as per timetables. Boatshed good place to eat and drink. Thai cafe also nice food but no alcohol licence, so take your own bottle.

Eating out in the centre of Stornoway was problematic unless you had pre-booked a table in a restaurant that takes bookings - and not all of them do! Without knowing to book in advance, we trawled round all the restaurants on a Tuesday night at 7.30 and they were all full. We ended up getting a takeaway! Having learned from that experience we then booked a table at Digby Chick for the Thursday night and can't recommend it highly enough. The food was superb. Stornoway is a good base for exploring the island, and staying in the centre of Stornoway certainly worked for us.

Good 3 bedroomed house at great value.

Good 3 bedroomed house at great value. One bedroom downstairs (good for disabled) and 2 upstairs. Both bathrooms are downstairs, which is invonvenient. The house is very comfortable overall and well-stocked with household gadgets. We were concerned by the proximity of the airport but this was NOT a problem. We heard nothing our entire stay.

The outskirts of Stornway, close to the gas station open all week, a good base for scheduled trips to and around Harris. The gas station is the only guarantee for quick shopping on Sunday because Tesco, Cooperative closed on Sunday. That's why when you come on Sunday you must have your food. Good news Chinese food at the bus station open from 12 so you will not starve.
