Wheldale Hotel, hotel in Darrington

Located in Castleford, a few steps from The Jungle, Wheldale Hotel features a bar, a shared lounge and a garden, as well as free WiFi and room service. At the inn, every room is equipped with a desk.

Single room, but space well used so didn’t feel cramped and everything you would need (except maybe some storage space, but I was only there overnight so didn’t really bother me) For a property with shared bathrooms probably the best I’ve stayed at. They were clean, available when required and the shower was lovely. Also a sink in room which helps. Nice decor in room.

An excellent location for travellers on the A1 and easy to find. Very helpful staff. The restaurant was very popular with families, but our menu choices was not as well cooked as I would have liked and the breakfast was poorly cooked, but this is a personal view. The whole place looked tired and Greene King need to take more care of its inns, this is the second time we have stayed in one and the hot water boiler has failed and there has been no hot water.

Darrington is a small well to do village near Pontefract. Bus service is minimal. Lots of big houses and well tended lawns. There are two pubs and a small general store. Church and church hall are set back from the road (which is busy) We were having a post breakfast stroll guessing the property prices and a local lady invited us to a coffee morning, which was nice.

The hotel was right next to the A1M but had little if any noise from it. It was ideal to break up the journey further north for a funeral & then the return journey. Bed was very comfortable and large, staff were very welcoming and friendly, having a pub attached gave a great choice for evening meals and breakfast. The only criticism was the occasional uneven floor in the room

I travelled to spend time with family. The staff are great. Location is good just off the A1. We visited Bridlington Beach for the day, which has a lovely beach and funfair and restaurants. It is about 1 hour and 20 mins from Darrington.

The only good point for our reason for being there was the location. Every other aspect of the Darrington Hotel was unpleasant, in fact downright disgusting! The place is filthy and the constant TV sport, in every nook and cranny, is unbearable. The rooms are tiny, the shower was minute and we had one chair between us. No hanging space or drawers. The food was awful, badly cooked, badly presented, cheap and nasty, though not to buy! The breakfasts were appalling! Little choice, poor quality, like warm water to make tea or coffee, there was nothing good about the breakfasts. The staff? Scruffy! One lad in particular, with filthy jeans, long dirty hair and an arrogant swagger, looked more like a tramp than a waiter! Many years ago we lived in Darrington and that hotel was our local. It was then a decent, well kept place. Now, it is simply disgusting!

Although close to the A1 road you enter another world at the Darrington. The rooms are at the back of the Building and are reasonably quiet. They are newly refurbished and very comfortable. The Staff are all fantastic making you feel welcome and if they know you personally without being too familiar. This is a Hungry Horse franchise so the range of food on offer is great value and excellent quality. Recommend Mollys poached eggs for breakfast if she is cooking.

The hotel itself is about a 10 minute drive from town and about £8 in a taxi, rooms were nice and fully equipped,i liked the fact they came with an iron and ironing board and hairdryer. The bed was very comfortable.Staff were all great especially the lady on reception who let us check in early. The prices in the bar and restaurant were particularly good value for money. They even had breakfast with santa on for the children which i thought was a lovely touch.

Very convenient location whilst travelling down the motorway. Lovely clean rooms, with very nice en suite and large screen tv. Food is excellent value and high quality. But, the best thing about The Darrington is it’s staff. They were all incredibly friendly and helpful, they really made our stay that little bit more special. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again if we are in the area. Fantastic place.

Hotel reception is just left of the pub, so you don't have to walk through the pub. Our room was large, with a full ensuit. Shower over bath, lots of very hot water. The staff were all lovely & friendly. The hotel is located just off the A1 but we didn't hear any traffic. Large free carpark. Decent breakfast, choices of fresh fruit, yogurts, pastries, cereal, toast and the hearty full English.

The breakfast was good, the room was clean and nicely decorated, I slept well in the bed and the staff were friendly and customer focussed. Having the Hungry Horse restaurant at the premises also mean't I could have a hot tasty meal at a time of my choosing. The hotel was easy to get to as it was close to the A1 ( it was not close enough to be affected by road noise).

Great little find. Food was very good, breakfast great value for money and children get a free breakfast with an adult one. Just a tip if you book direct with the hotel you get 20% of food. Bed was comfy, room was clean. Shower was lovely and powerful. For the money this is a great hotel.

The hotel had been refurbished since our last stay and we were pleasantly surprised. Especially pleased that the net curtains have been put back again as we are usually on the ground floor and people in the garden are looking straight in. The lighting is improved as well.
