1. Staff - Karl & Lorna are such excellent & helpful individual. We connected extremely well as Karl & I shared our appreciation of the great director Satyajit Ray and he has also been to my city. So we shared & exchanged a lot of views. Additionally, when my ferry got cancelled due to bad weather, Karl helped me change my reservation from Oban Youth Hostel to Port Charlotte Youth Hostel. In addition, he also helped me secure a bed at the Oban Youth Hostel next day through their own system whereas there was no availability for Oban Youth Hostel on booking.com. Lorna helped me secure reservation at the fantastic sea food kitchen restaurant next door. They are so helpful. Thank you so much!!! 2. Location - Simply excellent. Walking distance to Bruichladdich distillery, bus stop (just 5 min walk), eateries and convenience store. 3. Facilities - Huge Kitchen and Lounge area with super comfy furnitures & fixtures. Open a dram in their lounge on a stormy evening and enjoy a book. You will be lost in your own world. 4. Rooms - Super clean and super comfy with lockers underneath your bed. The bed has reading light, USB charging point, UK type electric plug points and a wash basin with mirror, a table and hooks for hanging your coats & clothes. Super arrangement. 5. Toilets & Bathrooms - Super clean and well fitted.

No. 1 Charlotte Street, hotel in Bowmore

Located in Port Ellen, No. 1 Charlotte Street has a garden, shared lounge, bar, and free WiFi. The rooms in the hotel are fitted with a coffee machine.

As a former inn keeper I know that sometimes things are not what one might expect, but how you deal with this is a true reflection of how client focused an establishment might be. I had booked two rooms and my room was exactly as expected, bright cheery and had a great view over the harbour. The bed mattress was a little too soft for my liking and I think might slowly sinking towards the end of its life. That said I did sleep well. The bathroom sink had a loose hot tap as the plastic washer had snapped underneath it. I imagine that trying to get a simple thing like that fixed on Islay is an issue and it caused no problem as the tap worked fine but I would worry how long it might be before a leak happens. The crew who serviced the rooms did a fantastic job and cleanliness was top notch. Breakfast was simple but tasty and there was a good selection of choices. All the staff I engaged with were delightful but a special mention must be given to the ever smiling Kim on reception. Despite facing the main road in Port Ellen the hotel was quiet. Th weather was unseasonably warm and dry and the sun shone long and hard; thus the view from the front of the hotel was fantastic. My friend was disappointed in his room choice. Nothing wrong with the room but simply too small for him and he had selected the wrong room. As the hotel was full he was unable to move room for two nights thus he decided to check out and move to the Islay hotel. No 1 Charlotte Street had no obligation to offer him a refund as it was his choice. However they choose to refund the two nights he had not stayed which is simply 'above and beyond'. If you want a reasonably priced in Port Ellen I would heartily recommend this place and do say hello to Kim from me.....she is a commensurate hospitality professional with many years experience and is also extremely charming.

Bowmore is a small but very pretty town/ village right on the loch shore - originating as a "planned village" from the late 1700s (go to the Islay museum in Port Charlotte to find out more). It has a whisky distillery of course which sadly was not running tours when we visited, due to covid. It has a couple of small shops that are great for books and presents, cafes, and a very unusual round church.

Bowmore seemed like the best place to stay on Islay as it was within an easy drive of all sights, distilleries and the ferry ports. There was also a reasonable array of shops, including a supermarket. We were lucky with fine weather throughout but could have done with a couple of extra days.

Bowmore is a lovely wee town situated in the middle of the island, ideal base for exploring. Places to shop and eat out available within walking distance. Also a good chinese takeaway. The round church is a must see.

Bowmore is main town of Islay and has a few bars and Bistros aswell as the distillery. There are a few shops and it gives a good feeling of island life and easy to travel to other villages by bus, taxi, hike or cycle. Roads are narrow and twisty. Nice place.

We were lucky to have the most fabulous weather for our whisky tasting 2 days! The Bowmore distillery is in an amazing location and we loved the whisky too. Supper in the Lochside Hotel was very good afterwards. Delighted to experience the Machrie Golf Club which has been restored to a classy place! Can’t wait to come back for a game of golf there!
