Coonawarra is so much more than vineyards: Penola is a large part of the Saint Mary McKillop story. Just a 30 min drive to the Bool Lagoon and Naracoorte fossil caves. Loop over to Dergholm and Kybybolite for the massive eucalypt trees. Also, it’s only a half hour drive to Mt Gambier.

We loved the vines and the ease of finding the cellar doors and the friendly staff at each of the venues. The restaurants were fabulous and the weather very good. Our house was clean and comfortable with many extras that we did not expect. Just go, you will love it. So many great cottages and cellar doors, boutique shops and eateries. Otellea Eat Fodder was brilliant.

A relaxing getaway for adult travellers.

A relaxing getaway for adult travellers. We found the whole area attractive and clean and staff in all venues that we visited were friendly and helpful. The Penola visitors and information centre is well worth a visit. Dined in the Royal Oak Hotel and found the menu held both pub classics as well as some innovative cuisine using locally sourced products at very reasonable prices.

It is wonderful to have so many amazing wineries within five minutes drive of each other. Springtime is so beautiful but I imagine that every season would have its attractions. If you love food and wine, this is an amazing opportunity to have everything at your fingertips.

Good spot to explore the wineries of the area.

Good spot to explore the wineries of the area. We could walk from our accommodation to at least 3 highly rated wineries. Lots of other things to do as well eg Naracoorte caves ( can easily spend a day there), didn’t have time to go down to Mt Gambier etc.
