Hotel Hanaya, hotel in Tanabe

Only a 5-minute walk from JR Kiitanabe Train Station, Hotel Hanaya offers simple accommodations with free Wi-Fi.

The food was amazing! We had an excellent breakfast before walking the Kumono Kodo trail and the lunch bento box was delicious as well. Nice smell of incense on arrival. The dining room was very cool with alot of American memorabilia. I love the saloon doors that lead to the bathroom. Really close to kii tanabe and Isakyas as well.

Kumano Winery Guest House, hotel in Tanabe

Set within 10 km of Kamitonda Concert Hall and 11 km of Kozan-ji Temple, Kumano Winery Guest House provides rooms with air conditioning and a shared bathroom in Tanabe.

I got here dusty and tired after a long backwards Kumano-Kodo with an extra day walking from Takajiri-oji to the winery. I was very glad the walk here was my final day and would recommend it as such for any other backward pilgrims. It was considerably harder to navigate the trail than the Nakahechi route and at times very steep - there's one section where you have to pull yourself up with a knotted rope attached to a tree. It is not a well travelled path at all but it was peaceful and beautiful and I'm glad I gave the day to the walk. (I started in Takahara at kiri-no-sato, so the day was down to Takajiri-oji and then back up. My map was in Japanese but the woman in the tourist bureau was very helpful. Yes you do have to walk up the steepest path at the start, not the road - (it feels like a storm drain) - and then there's a tiny tiny way into the trees otherwise you end up in someone's backyard.) I just wanted a boozy drink, and all the food I could eat. I was not disappointed on either front. I was fed in my room and it was an expensive meal before the booze, and all the more expensive as I was thirstier than I needed to be. Incredible Valpolicella red wine imported by the host from Italy, priced reasonably but you pay for what you get. It really is a GUEST HOUSE. You are in their house. They are making an incredible thing though, farming as they can, hosting as they can around it, employing locals, making this obscure part of an old Kumano-Kodo into a really positive place either to gather before you start or to decompress when you are finished.

Staff was able to provide information clearly and was fluent in English. He was also very kind to pick us up from the train station for free. He also provided suggestions for sight seeing and restaurants. Highly recommend the accommodation due to the service and facilities.

Tanabe was our starting point for our Kumano Kodo trek so we stayed in Tanabe only one day not realizing how much there is to do in Tanabe. If we ever come to Tanabe again, we will be sure to stay longer to enjoy all that there is to do there. I think we could have stayed a whole week if we weren't going on our trek.

Having visited Japan so many times, this trip was probably the best of all. I followed the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage and experienced both the people, the culture and the religion of ancient Japan. I spent in total about 4 days walking and all of the accommodations (family run b&b and a hot spring hotel) was all very clean, with tasty food and friendly people. I'd love to go back again and experience the other less famous trails of the same region.

We loved our night here. It's clean, comfortable and quiet, and Simon was a gracious and friendly host. You can even walk to Takijiri from here if you want to get a longer walk on your first day of the Kumano Kodo (if you are staying in Takahara the second night it's about a 6 hour walk from the guesthouse). Otherwise Simon offered to drive us to the Takijiri trailhead. Highly recommend this place, thank you Simon!

Insuperable location along the kumano kodo, steps away from an open-air onsen on the riverside surrounded by nature, for a relaxing bath after a day of hiking. We stayed in a traditional japanese room, with private AC. Bathrooms/toilets are shared but well tended to. The owner is very kind and helpful. We tried their bento lunch boxes, which were perfect to take out for the day and also very tasty.

Location super handy. The highlight was Aki (I hope I haven't butchered your name), who was such a tremendously helpful soul. He basically planned my route for me to walk the Kumano Kodo, including making a phone call for me, which would have been difficult as I have no Japanese, nor international sim. He even continued to answer questions for me after I checked out! What a star.

Owner was super friendly and welcoming! I arrived late at night, saw that there was a note to call him and he came down right away! He was also super helpful with pointing out what was around the area/bus timings etc. It is a short walk from Kii-Tanabe Station. Everything is great for a simple stay before heading off to kumano kodo!

A fantastic, spacious room in a traditional house in an idyllic location in the japanese countryside, surrounded by plum and citrus orchards. The most gracious host, picked us up from and brought us back to Takijiri-oji and kumano Kodo trailhead. Extremely kind and helpful, thank you for a wonderful stay!
