Accommodation was faultless and spotless with an outdoor shower as added bonus. We only stayed for one night as we were in transit to Manuel Antonio, but wished we had stayed for a couple of days to explore San Jose. Great hostel for a night stay in Alajuela, close to the airport and to the bus terminal. Friendly staff, free coffee in the morning even if breakfast isn't included. Hot water available, clean rooms, great bar/restaurant with a view on the 4th floor. Would definitely recommend!
Landing at the airport at night, we stayed in this city until morning because it is close. San jose is much further away. We only used this town so we would not be travelling around costa rica at night. Night life in alajuela was a little scary, but during the day it was much mre comfortable. Public bus in alajuela took us straight to la fortuna the next morning. It is smarter to stay in alajuela verse san jose if you need short accomodations for travel to and from airport.
Alajuela is the best place to stay when arriving or leaving San Jose. Getting to the town center is a little difficult, just because of traffic. However, the taxi drivers are helpful and fair. It can be challenging finding a place to eat in the evening, but we found some good food in a coffee shop about 2 blocks off the center. The plaza was lively with families and a marimba band.
We spent 3 nights at a comfortable hotel relaxing after 6 weeks travelling around Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Alajuela is not a tourist town but it does have an international airport.
Alajuela has nothing to offer for tourist, even the exhibition at the only museum was closed. It is very convenient to and fro to the airport and maybe a day to visit the poas vulcano and the chocolate or coffee tour
Alajuela is a nicer city than San Jose. People feel safe to walk the streets there even at night. It is only a $6 taxi ride to or from the airport and buses are even less costly. We didn't do much there except to rest, eat dinner that night and breakfast the next morning and prepare to fly back to the states the next day. There are several parks around the city that help to break up the side by side buildings, noise and heavy traffic with green and tranquility.
We based our first and last nights here as it is close to the airport and Volcan Poas. I have visited Costa Rica before and last time I went to San Jose from the airport - this time was a much better plan! Alajuela is much more of a local town and a lot less hectic than SJO, no need to go that extra distance to the capital when you can get everywhere from here, and taxi transfers can pick you up at Dennys near the airport to go off to other places in Costa Rica, so no need to even go to the big city at all if you want a totally city-free holiday. We didnt have time to look around the town itself, but we did stay in a brilliant little budget hotel on the way to Poas.
If you have a late afternoon or evening arrival flight, or an early departure flight, Alajuela is the perfect location to stay for starting or ending your Costa Rican travels. It's only a few minute cab or shuttle ride from SJO. Getting to or from central San Jose can take an hour or more. I highly recommend Resturante Monteleone - down the street from Hotel Cortez Azul. It offered the best meal of our 2 week trip and Deb and I didn't mind spending $70.00 US (included tip) on meals, drinks (4), desert & coffee as we practiced our Spanish with Ronald, our delightful waiter.
I like the free airport shuttle and the hot showers. I didn't like the general vibe of the hostel. There were no comfortable common spaces and no kitchen. Alajuela, in my opinion, isn't a place I'd visit unless I have a very late arriving flight or early morning departing flight.
Visited Alajuela for an afternoon before flying home. Wouldn't go specially but it's very close to airport and much closer and cheaper to get to than San Jose
I loved everything about Garden’s House. I wish I had come a few days early to stay in this lovely little haven longer. It felt like a home away from home. Luis and Randall are experts in hospitality, and they have established a wonderfully comfortable, peaceful, and beautiful place for travelers to stay in Costa Rica. Value for price is excellent. Breakfast was delicious and the back patio was my favorite place to lounge. I would definitely come back to Garden’s House again, and I will recommend to anyone I know that plans to stay in Alajuela.
Very friendly staff. Central location in Alajuela close to airport but also walkable to restaurants, town square etc. Our first room had a little balcony with nice view of mountains. Free taxi service from airport was great and one less thing to worry about coordinating (we had people arriving different days and utilized for both arrival and departure so used this three times!) Courtyard and pool area also very nice, though water was cold.
Alajuela City
Great location in Alajuela. The owners are very helpful and friendly. The guesthouse has a courtyard with little garden which is really nice. In the morning it is possible to make your own breakfast (toasts, eggs, butter, jam, juices are available). This accommodation is great as they offer airport transfer for 5 USD. The airport is very close to the guesthouse. Alajuela is a nice Costa Rican town which is worth to visit (half or full day).
Alajuela City
Patricia is a lovely host - she picked me/ dropped me off at the airport, cooked delicious breakfast and was super friendly. The house is located in a quiet street, so no noise at night. Very interesting to gain a glimpse into a house of a Costa Rican family. The bed was comfy and the room absolutely clean, so I slept very well there. You can also walk by foot to Alajuela from there and discover the city.
Alajuela City
We stayed for the first 2 nights of our trip and the last night before leaving Costa Rica. The hotel staff were lovely and could not have been more helpful. The hotel location is very convenient for the airport and a central place for wandering around Alajuela, finding restaurants, etc. The garden dining area was a pleasant place to relax, and the breakfast was delicious (the best Gallo pinto of our trip).
Great location for airport and for visiting the former capital of Alajuela (well worth it). Lovely small pool area and separate restaurant area with good food. Great to have an owner who cares about birds and who goes out of his way to attract birds to the sizeable garden. Regular haunt for birdwatchers on their way in or out of Costa Rica with free (morning) airport shuttle.
Wonderful, kind and very helpful staff. My husband and I especially enjoyed their balanced and complete breakfast which was included in the price. As the name indicates, the hotel was built in 1915, and had a very cozy and interesting atmosphere. It was close to the center of the city of Alajuela, and conveniently it was only 2 1/2 miles from the international airport.
Alajuela City
The apartment's location is excellent, just a few meters away from shops and restaurants. You can walk from the apartment to Alajuela's downtown in just under 15 minutes and the trip from the airport is short, Damaris the caretaker was super friendly the whole time, she was always around if I needed anything. Overall it was a great experience.
Alajuela City
Uber ride from the apartment to the airport took less than 10 minutes. Located in a quiet, safe neighborhood in walking distance to downtown Alajuela. Apartment was spacious, clean, and had a washing machine and three comfy beds. Olga was exceptionally kind and ensured that we had everything we needed and more, e.g. coffee, creamer, and snacks too!
Grecia
Away from the hustle and bustle of Alajuela in a country setting. Parking and a restaurant on site. Restaurant was decent and reasonably priced. Owner was friendly and helpful. Room was pretty large and the bed was softer than the norm in Costa Rica. All in all a good place for us to spend an extra night while waiting for our luggage to arrive.
Río Segundo
immaculate, fully supplied apartment;best wifi we’ve had in Costa Rica (working on vacation) ; virtually new and very elegant; very secure gated community; washer/dryer to clean up 2 weeks of travel; central location between Alajuela and Heredia if you have a car or use Uber (Uber ride to downtown San Jose only cost us $10US)
Alajuela City
This place is a little haven on the outskirts of Alajuela. Great value, great staff, kitchen, and super relaxing garden area with cute cats. We are using it as our “keep coming back to” Costa Rica base. They drive you for a reasonable rate to the airport any time of day or night. Thank you Roman, Kim and Juan Carlos :)
Alajuela City
Great location in a safe/quiet neighbourhood very close to the airport. We had a spare afternoon so walk into the Alajuela town centre which has a lot of history. Breakfast was superb. Fresh fruit, eggs, toast and as much Costa Rican coffee as you like. Rooms were a good size and shower was hot and had good power.
My stay at Fairfield by Marriott San Jose Airport Alajuela was fantastic. The staff were welcoming and efficient, the room was clean and comfortable, and the location was convenient for airport access. The complimentary breakfast was a delightful addition. Highly recommend this hotel for a pleasant stay in Alajuela.
The dome was so fun to stay in and the family that hosted us was so accommodating!!! They shuttled us to the poas volcano, the la Paz Waterfall, and into alajuela to our next hotel! We ordered food from them night 1 and it was delicious. All around it was a wonderful experience for us and we highly recommend it!
Alajuela City
I was welcomed by the owners Carmen and Felix. They are really thoughtful and will do everything to make your stay super comfortable. It is like coming home. The apartment has everything you need. The neighbourhood is perfectly located. Close to the airport and the town of Alajuela and a big shopping mall.
Alajuela City
Lovely little place just outside Alajuela. The gardens are beautiful with hummingbirds. The owners have two cute dogs. Breakfast was lovely. Unfortunately when we stayed the restaurant was closed but have heard its excellent! We only stayed one night but will return if we ever come back to Costa Rica.
Very cute hotel - just what we needed. The breakfast was delicious, the staff was friendly, and the courtyard was a great place to hang out. The hotel was centrally located in the city center of Alajuela, and a short drive from the airport. Would return when I come back to Alajuela!
Alajuela City
Very nice home cooked breakfast and a great view of local life from the front porch. This place was such a great alternative to hotel/condo stays! Highly recommend if you want to be close to Alajuela and San Jose but away from the noise and traffic. 5 minutes from the airport!
Alajuela City
A good value stay close to the airport in the central part of Alajuela. Staff was very nice and extremely helpful. Continental breakfast was fine. Found the hostel to be very clean. Excellent wifi and they brought a chair and desk to my room so I could work remotely.
