As you drive through the front entrance gates and the magnificent pear archway of the Red Hill Peony Estate, you enter a property that has been in the current owner’s family for 137 years. The Red Hill Peony Cottage is made from ancient bluestone blocks and is located on the grounds of the Red Hill Peony Estate. The cottage itself is situated towards the back of the 80 acre family property, so it is a distance from any other residential building. It provides a peaceful, secluded and classically appointed home amongst the lush green volcanic hills of Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. This old bluestone cottage has recently been renovated, paying close attention to period detailing ensuring that guests feel both relaxed and indulged. The cottage garden and the intimate outdoor living space looks beyond to the fields of thousands of growing Peonies, Lilies and Dahlias … a truly breath-taking view when in full flower. Typically, Peonies flower from late-October through to mid-December, Lilies late-December to late-January & Dahlias January to late-March. During your stay in the Peony Cottage, your vases will be filled with seasonal flowers, which you may take away with you.
Jill is the fifth generation of the Sheehan/Holmes families on this property. Her great, great grandparents (Robert & Eliza Sheehan) purchased 215 acres (87 ha) here at Red Hill in 1886. Their daughter Olive and her husband William Holmes milled timber, planted vegetables and fruit trees and grazed cattle on the property. Her grandfather and uncle developed the property as an apple and cherry orchard. Now, Jill grows commercial quantities of Peonies, Lilies, and Dahlias.
Using either the Arthur's Seat Rd front entrance or the Pardalote Rise/Stony Creek rear entrance, the Red Hill Peony Cottage gives you access to a number of nearby restaurants (Green Olive, Tedesca, and Mocks Apples). And, it is short drive to the famous Ten Minutes by Tractor Restaurant, the T’Gallant winery and scrumptious Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm. Other important places to visit are our own Red Hill Peony Estate (when open); the Red Hill Truffle Farm (including Truffle Hunts and a few Truffle Degustation dinners) and, the famous Red Hill Market which is held on the first Saturday of the month in Spring, Summer and Autumn. Last but not least, the historic Red Hill Show on Victoria’s Labour Weekend in March, a true and rare look at a great Aussie country Show/Fair.
