Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area.
Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area. The Hunderwaisser museum was good too. The walk along the river on a good day and arty house and crafts in shops are delightful. Whangarei city is nice to investigate the many stores and restaurants some up little alley ways. Great coffee and breakfasts there too. It's a lovely city I've visited many times.

People/salespersons are usually pleasant and helpful.

Your ID will probably be checked at least once by police.
Large selection of food places.
Apart from Hundertwasser Art Centre, Whangarei Museum, the alternative Quarry Art Centre and the Waterfalls, check out town has anything else you need or are interested in… a quiet town otherwise!

The place is pretty by the marina with shops and restaurants, but! Due to circumstances missed the lunch/dinner hours for eating out. All (yes all on the waterfront) restaurants only offer bar snacks during other hours. EG fries, squid rings etc. We wanted something more substantial. Many people were walking away when they found that out. This is a tourist spot for pities sake!
We had had a long drive and were starving!
Also no really nice accommodation. Best I found was 3 1/2 star Distinction Hotel which has good bones but was really tired needing a major makeover. Stained carpet, wall paper peeling off. I am a kiwi and embarrassed that this tourist spot has sat on its laurels. I know people struggling with covid etc but wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to make your place more desirable. My view - if you don’t have to stop don’t 😡

Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and listening to the birdsong. Supermarkets and eats were close enough.
We didn't have enough time to visit places though we know there are great places to visit.

We only stayed for one night so we managed to get down to the marina and see the cool ball-clock and the Hundertwasser (which is amazing) and have an awesome lunch (so many places to pick from!). Next time we go to Whangarei we will be sure to do the loop walk which sounds very interesting indeed!

We went with the kids to aquatic centre, flip out, action zone and the heritage park. Very good family entertainment and easy to drive from place to place. The motel is very close to supermarkets and various eateries. Good location.
The room had a lot of space and the bed was very comfy with excellent sheets (I'm very fussy about good quality sheets and these had a sateen finish).
It was a clean room with a good array of toiletries and most of all the motel had information about its "green" policies so a big tick from me! What was very important is that it had lights above the bed enabling you to actually read in bed unlike many motels where there's one low light in the middle of the room which gives out poor light.
Charming old hotel in the heart of Whangarei, with ample surrounding services including an in-house Thai restaurant and bar, and a little Italian eatery just across the road.
The staff were friendly, efficient, and very helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was awesome.
A busy nightlife outside your window, including a train track, but once the windows are down we never heard a thing.
Highly recommend it for such an affordable price.
This is a lovely house-hotel place. You are sharing this house with other traveling guests, so some socializing would be going on if you stay here for more than one day. The rooms are cozy with comfortable beds. There was a small TV and plug-in electric heater provided. There are a couple of bathrooms to be shared and a homey kitchen. The host was very kind and communicative. The price was very fair as accommodations vary in this northern section of New Zealand.
Full of all sorts of things as it is treated as a home, although tidier and a much better view than mine. To answer some of the questions I had going in... Airport noise is minimal, during the three days I was there I faintly heard two planes. It is only the top and bottom which can be separated off so for a solo traveler you can get the three bedroom top layer to yourself so it is very much worth the money. I would love to stay again when I'm in Whangarei next.
Pleasant place to stay. Host was welcoming and very accommodating during our stay. Bed sheets and towels were more than enough and clean.
Staff were kind and never had any issue. Rooms were quiet and private as walls are built with bricks and concrete.
Heat pump was near new and wasn’t smelly.
Great location as it is right off the state highway 1 in Whangarei town, which is very handy to access the CBD.
I would definitely return when I’m back in Whangarei.
For our purposes being close to the Kensington Private Hospital and a good range of nearby take-away food outlets the motel was in an ideal location.
The friendliness of the proprietors, Gordon and Heather, and regular staff was also appreciated.
We resolved to use the motel again even if overnight stays in Whangarei were necessary for appointments at either Kensington Private or Whangarei Public Hospitals.
Couldn't recommend this accommodation more! Becks was so lovely to deal with, with clear communication, and very accommodating to our requests! The accommodation was perfectly clean (I have high standards too)! Bed extremely comfortable. Just wish we could have stayed longer. Location very central as well, only a couple minutes drive to main city centre. Thank you Becks for a perfect stay.
A terrific welcome awaited me at School Lane! This was an ideal base for my stay in Whangarei as it was nice and close to town, buses, the town basin and shops. I walked everywhere as it is so convenient. Thank you so much for having me to stay in your lovely character filled home - such a comfortable B and B.
The motel is an easy 15 minute flat walk to/from the CBD. Clean white bed linen and towels. Manager helpful and cleaning staff delightful - happy, friendly and helpful. Room was a decent size with a small balcony. The shower was old style with separate hot and cold taps, but it was the best we've had all trip.
Nice large room, friendly staff, good parking and good beds. The location is excellent. The town center (Town Basin) is just a 15 minute walk, and two supermarkets are about next door. Whangarei also turned out to be more interesting than we had expected.
Another fabulous stay at a great motel. hosts are lovely and accomodating too and spacious for us and our two grandchildren. Very handy to susshi and Thai eating places and the Shell Kensington. I love motels that have airconditioning in Winter!
Despite requesting B&B, breakfast was NOT included. Hotel was tired and shabby. Rooms were noisy from nearby guests and staff working overnight in laundry. Pool was dirty, difficult to get into and freezing.
Clean, spacious and super comfortable, we always try to stay at the Lodge Bordeaux anytime we travel to Whangarei. Customer service is friendly and authentic.
No breakfast at motel.
Motel close to Whangarei hospital which was a bonus. Quiet and relaxing time had at motel.
Warm and cosy did not need heater at all.
