Spacious apartment in the heart of Groningen! Our group enjoyed plenty of space to relax and hang out in the large living room and dining room. The location was great, and ver close to all the action!

Groningen is a beautiful city , I would prefer it to Amsterdam . It is a nice size, there's loads to see and do. The Groninger Museum always has terrific exhibitions and the building itself is amazing. The Ship Museum is excellent also . There is a lovely ambience with many cosy cafes and bars and great eateries such as the Drei Gezusters. We had great takeaway food at the Vis Markt , the Kibbeling is very tasty and the portions everywhere are generous.
As it is a University city , there is a lively student atmosphere,
We walked everywhere as everything is accessible. It is a wonderful spot for a city break.

We liked this time a lot because of the boat tour through the town and our visit to Groninger museum with the Rolling Stones exhibition. We had diner at the Branderij and at Eetcafe de Slingerij. Both good quality for a fine price and kind staff.

Groningen is a lovely univeristy town easily reached by train. Taking a walk through the center to visit the almshouses (there is a good guidebook for that) and their gardens was a pleasant way to get to know the city. A big plus is that there is no mass tourism as in Amsterdam, mostly day trippers from the area or just across the river from Germany.

I would definitely recommend Groningen as a place to visit.
I would definitely recommend Groningen as a place to visit. It is a little gem. It’s easily reached from Schipol airport by a direct train that takes just over 2 hours.
I only discovered it as I found Dutch family that live here. Definitely recommend as a change from Amsterdam. The town has plenty of shops and restaurants, museums and a canal. Everything is accessible by foot or local buses. Just be aware of the cyclists.

Groningen is a very lovely smaller town with a nice old town surrounded by water canals. In the city I spent most of my time at a conference at the university, whose campus itself is very interesting and I had the opportunity to see the particle accelerator there as part of the excursion - certainly very interesting for those interested in (bio)physics and (radio)medicine. In my free time I walked through the old town and around the canals, which was very nice and romantic. The same could be said of the walking path from the city to the university area, which led through beautiful, almost wild countryside along horse paddocks, one arm of the river, among meadows, etc. The town also offers great gourmet experiences. I was only able to spend a few days in the city, so unfortunately I didn't have a chance to explore the surrounding area.
Breakfast was lovely, good variety and plenty of each option it seemed. The room itself was very dated but not unclean or uncomfortable, quite adequate for our needs. The location was amazing, right in the city centre, though it was a little hard to find the parking if you’ve never driven in the city before, or aren’t used to driving in the Netherlands in general. The staff are so friendly, helpful and really the soul of this hotel. It would have gotten a lesser rating without them.
It was just a little paradise. Everything was so comfortable, including the good blanket. In the Netherlands they think in the summer you do not need a blanket, no matter what the temperature, and in this hotel they gave the most qualitative blanket which was just perfect.
The room is big, bathroom spacy, staff friendly and helpful - the best coffee for free as much as you want (and in ceramic cups). In sum, the best place to stay. I could have spend there much longer!
I liked staying in City Hotel Groningen:
+ Friendly hosts
+ Tidy and cozy
+ The bed was good (a bit too soft for me)
+ My room was near the elevator, but it didn't bother me at all, as it was very quiet
+ Great water pressure in the shower
+ The room was very warm but there was enough air
+ No problems with Wi-Fi
+ Easy access to all the amenities in the old city center
+ Fast check-in and check-out
+ Really good breakfast
+ Nespresso machine in the room 😍
Well maintained, reasonably modern, clean. Staff is friendly and helpful. Location on, and access to, the lake is nice in summer. Great walking, cycling around the lake. Ask for a room with lake view. The others face the highway hidden behind the trees. Good access to/from the highway. Shuttle going into city, although we didn’t use it, is great as location of hotel is remote and Groningen is not a car/parking friendly city…..use the shuttle if going into town!
- Location is very central and close to the train station.
- Price for a single room is likely one of the cheapest in the city centre (while this was more than what I usually pay for in other cities, note that accommodation in Groningen is very expensive!)
- Room was well-furnished, with a kettle, fridge, cupboard, table and a sink.
- Room was clean and in general the whole property was quite clean.
- Host/manager was very friendly and pleasant.
The breakfast was excellent since the restaurant is merged with Martini Hotel. A bonus, I guess. The hostel itself provided a microwave for you to warm up your food. Located in the heart of the city made it easier for me to discover the entire scenery. The hostel is also very accessible since there are plenty of bus stops. It is excellent for you if you're looking for a place to just put your luggage and leave to hustle.
Great place for a short stay in the middle of the city of Groningen. A nice clean room with a comfortable bed.
All you except from a professional hotel. Too bad I was not able to sit down at the cafe for breakfast. But the solution of picking my breakfast and taking it upstairs is perfect.
Hope to be back someday to enjoy the other services this hotel has to offer.
Family room was spacious and clean.
Breakfast looked appetizing and was well presented, weather was perfect to eat outside in the enclosed courtyard.
Location only 5 minute walk to city center, discount for the parking garage was great and only a 5 minute walk to hotel. Would definitely stay there again when in Groningen.
Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Perfect location in the heart of the city centre. If you're looking for a hotel which combines decent amenities and services with alternative hotel style, then give it a try; I think it's worth it! Both owners and staff were very kind, friendly and with a really nice energy! Liked the music vibes of this place!
The hotel is located in a walking distance from the city centre. It is a very cosy, clean, and newly renovated apartment. The kitchen is well equipped, so you can easily prepare breakfast, the shop is nearby. The bed is really comfortable. The person who designed the interior is really skilled!
Beautifully decorated hotel in a charming old building. Perfect location just opposite the Martini tower. Very confortable room, great breakfast in the Grand cafe. Staff was very welcoming. Really the best place to stay in Groningen.
Good solid hotel, perfect for students who want to be in the middle of the action. The courtyard was buzzing every night with partygoers. We loved being in the middle of the action, but not everyone would.
