Madarao is a small village about 25 minutes away by bus from Iiyama. It is very accessible from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Dinner has to be booked in advance since there are not too many choices. People are very friendly, as Japanese are usually are, and try to accommodate as much as possible.

The fact that I’m leaving a review at all means that we really loved the place. I’m not the social media type so rarely leave reviews and when I do I’m always conservative so 8/10 is excellent. (Hope it doesn’t bring down your average 😕). Loved the chalet, good size, sparkling clean, super friendly staff and very comfy bed and facilities. Would highly recommend you to everyone. Sigh, missing it as I type this to be honest.

The igloos in Kamakura Snow Village was very interesting.
The igloos in Kamakura Snow Village was very interesting. We even built a snowman! Maguse Onsen was a good experience with its outdoor onsen overlooking the Kijimadaira ski area. Wish we had known about the temple trail in Iiyama town earlier to plan for it. Maybe next trip.

Iiyama is the gateway to ski field heaven - in winter.
Iiyama is the gateway to ski field heaven - in winter. The train station is only 5 years old and is very modern, clean and well laid out - transferring to buses is smooth and moving around is helped by elevators and escalators.
The Information Centre was staffed by a young lady who spoke English beautifully and is very helpful. You can send your ski gear from there via Kuroneko to avoid lugging it onto the Shinkansen.
There is a walking tour you could do in summer to take in the local sights - some of them being a doll museum, paper making, onsen, cycling ... depending on the season.

I came to Iiyama to walk the Shin-Etsu trail, and I had decided to walk it without a guide, which proved to be quite the challenge, and everyone at the visitor center were incredibly kind and helpful in order for me to finish walking the trail, and I am so grateful for that. I would definitely recommend walking the trail, but with a guide!
I had a fabulous time staying at the Silk Inn. The staff were friendly and helpful and the Onsen was fantastic. The room was clean, with an en-suite, albeit a small bathroom but functional.
The breakfast was great and the seafood cooked by the chef for dinner was delicious. The bar located in the basement was cozy and a great spot for a night cap..
I will certainly be back for the winter season as the hotel is only a short walk to the slopes.
Close to ski fields, easy access from Shinkansen station by bus. Room was a good size for a Japanese hotel, lovely view of the mountains from the room. Large buffet for breakfast and dinner with a good selection of food. Hotel had its own onsen which was great. Large locker room for ski equipment and also a rental place on site. There was also a restaurant and cafe in the complex. Discount price lift tickets for guests.
The managers (Lisa and Stuart) were extremely welcoming and accommodating. They went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and help with our plans, which made it felt more like a B&B than a hotel.
Active Life is in a great location close to the mountain. The room was a good size and there were plenty of communal spaces to hang out. We’d definitely stay at Active Life again for future trips to Madarao!
The host was very welcoming. The location was great for ski-out (for everyone) and ski-in (for intermediate above skier).
Room was a bit old but fine. The bathroom was a bit (too) small. No tissues in the room, but toilet paper in the bathroom. Breakfast was simple but good. Only the host and her sons are running the place, so breakfast can be slow when the hotel is full.
Overall good experience :)
This place was so amazingly friendly. Served very traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner meals, which was a very new thing to this American traveler. Ski resort was a 5 min walk from hotel. My sense of time was very slow but the hotel staff was so helpful by accommodating reminders for breakfast and dinner. Hotel view was very beautiful.
It was large enough to be comfortable in and not feel crowded but small enough to be cozy. It felt like staying in a friend’s place rather than a hotel and we liked that. The location was ideal, a short walk to lift and among all the eating and drinking places. I had snowboard courses and that was great too.
The hosts were great, and the house was very cozy. They have delicious homemade dinners with all kinds of drinks and good breakfast as well. The hotel is pet-friendly so we met a few cute dogs. There was a heavy snowfall on our last day but Mark helped all his guests get to the slopes. Thank you!
Very close to the lifts. Easy 5 minutes walk. Under 10 minutes walk (with suitcases) to the bus stop to Iiyama Shinkansen Station. The hosts Boris & Mayimi were extremely helpful & friendly. Good little bar & effective drying room.
It’s very convenient, the bus stop at the door, it’s a ski-in & out hotel, there are large ski room to keep your board downstairs, they provide the plastic pot, you can take the water & ice to your room.
Friendly and helpful staff, location is perfect, snow resort just located right in front of the hotel. Breakfast is tasty, room is spacious and comfortable, highly recommended
Great location for the ski hill and nice hotel. The bar offered a lively social area and they onsen was fantastic. The breakfast had a great selection. Parking was on site.
Walking distance to ski lifts. Good food at good price. Not a luxury hotel, but if you're looking for good value for skiing, this place was great. Staff were very helpful
Ski in, ski out. One of the closest lodges to the lift. Some of the best food in Madarao. We noticed some groups from other hotels dinning there. Friendly service.
Cost and casual place to stay for a ski/snowboard trip. Very friendly staff and the location for the hotel is very good. I was on the slopes after a 5 min walk.
