Friendly, clean, warm, welcoming and quirky.
Friendly, clean, warm, welcoming and quirky. Excellent home cooked breakfast. Close to town. So quirky it reminded me of Banksy’s Walled Off hotel on the West Bank. Great opportunity to stay in ex-mining accommodation.

This is a very interesting fully functional Cory located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean pretty close to the North Pole. (Closer to the north pile than any other major city in the world.) Anyone can visit Svalbard and stay here as long as you like, regardless of 'nationality' / passport(s). It's great if you have money, but even if you don't you can find inexpensive food at the store (if you look hard) and there's free food left at the hostel, plus they give you free breakfast. 🙂

For somebody from South India the place can only be described as otherworldly... like going to a different planet, almost. The weather was in the minus 20 s when i visited last week and it is essential that one prepares for this if visiting in the winter. It is not exactly easy to get around in this island of 2,000 people or so. I came to my hotel in the airport bus and was picked up by the organisers of my various activities like dog sledding etc. I believe there is a taxi but am not sure it can be hailed quickly. Apart from the city centre ( which is 3 streets) other places like the church, harbour etc are a bit of a walk and one has to be prepared for that. It is impossible to walk to these places in winter in the cold and pitch dark. Vegetarian food options were available but limited. Overall, it was a memorable experience, though.

The end of the earth, or so it feels... we arrived for snow on the ground in September and below freezing the whole time. The one big shop, the Co-op, in the town is great, has everything you need, plus the only alcohol shop is part of it selling a big range, you need to show a boarding pass for your flight to buy drink though! Liked the Svalbard brewery by the harbour, their beer is in every bar in town but on a Friday you can book a space in their taproom, really good. Karlsberger pub (in the shopping centre) is worth a go too, lots of mining decor and a huge range of spirits. For unusual food, Mary-Ann's Polarrigg has a restaurant attached with (so I heard) superb food, but the bar there will serve food too, we had the home smoked tasting plate of Minke whale, bearded seal and reindeer which was fascinating. Didn't see any polar bears, which was both good and bad, it's a strange feeling to be walking around and not to be the alpha predator...

We loved the people, we met. Everyone was hospitable.
We loved the people, we met. Everyone was hospitable. And all the guides we had, were really good and dedicated. The Haugen pensjonat was, like everything else, an excellent experience. We felt everybody did their best and loved what they did.
We had fish and chips at Kroa. The food was really nice and good for the price, and the room was a local experience made of timber.
We went around in Longyearbyen by foot or were driven by our guides. Between the airport and the town is also a bus with reasonable prices.
For my next visit, I would wear warmer clothes - a thin layer of merino wool under the gloves and normal clothes.

This is a place where you should stay longer and in different times of the year.
My favorite place to eat was the mexican whith really nice made food and 100 meter next to it a great place to have coffe and a sandwhich.
If you need outdoor gear this is the place to get it.
Great breakfast, wonderful staff, and charming rooms. They are in the process of renewing the bathrooms, and the new ones are gorgeous - the old ones (we stayed in two different rooms) are OK, too. Location is right in the center of town, so everything is in walking distance (e.g. grocery store is 2 minutes down the road). Restaurant Kroa is next door, and directly connected, so you can order their pizza as take-out and they will deliver it to the hotel lobby.
The Deluxe room is spacious and comfortable, located in the main building with an elevator. A Standard room is smaller, still comfortable, but in a non-elevator building across the street. I have been in both in my 2 night stay. The Restaurant is very good. The staff is friendly and efficient.
It is expensive to visit Longyearbyen, and this may one of the more economical choices.
Just perfect. Beautiful hotel with a cozy atmosphere. Quiet, on a hill, walking distance to shops and attractions. Wonderful breakfast. Lots of little sitting rooms to relax in. Shuttle bus to the airport drops you or picks you up on the hotel door step
You are given a moisturizing cream as a gift, which is greatly appreciated considering how dry the air can be in Svalbard
Great location in the middle of Longyearbyen with many eating and drinking options with a couple of minutes walk. The room was perfect for our group of six and was bigger that we'd expected. Very comfortable and convenient. We'd feared there might be night-time noise from the pub below - none whatsoever. If we ever return to Svalbard, we'd be happy to stay here again.
Location kind of in middle of Longyearbyen made everything easily accessible walking. On-site restaurant was convenient, and having a desk in room was nice. The pick-up system for airport transfers was really simple. The decor was really interesting, and there was a superb spot for seeing and photographing Northern Lights.
The staff and location are really excellent. All the outings/boat trips pick you up from the hotel and you can book through the reception as well to go on some of the outings/boat trips. The breakfast overall was good. The bus brings you straight to the hotel from the airport and to the airport when you leave.
Exquisite hotel in Longyearbyen, beautifully decorated and ultra-comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, the views were spectacular, the 5 o'clock tea and treats were lovely and the staff was super friendly. They also have a great bar with very nice drinks. Everything exceeded our expectations.
It was the cleanest hostel/ hotel I have ever stayed in. Spotless and modern, excellent kitchen fully equipped. The shower and toilets were separate, which makes a huge difference, also spotlessly clean. Yulya and Sam were outstanding and quickly became "family"
The room facilities are very new and the interior is very warm. Breakfast is very varied, and the staff are very friendly and polite to solve all our problems. The location of the hotel is in the city center, which is very convenient.
Causey atmosphere, nice living room and good food; possibility to use little kitchen. "Shoes off policy" keeps the floors clean; situated at close range to centre of Longyearbyen but also to the harbour. Bus connection to the airport.
The breakfast was tasteful and I would absolutly recommend the dinner at the restaurant. The room was clean. The staff was good, although not so helpful when asking for questions regarding the area. Overall a fair hotel that is ok
If you are going to stay in Longyearbyen this is the only hotel to stay in. Great atmosphere and so comfortable. Excellent breakfast and good service from the hotel. I first stayed here 17 years ago and I am still visiting.
Perfect location, close to nature. A bit of a walk to Longyearbyen, but with amazing views. The staff was very friendly. Good breakfast with waffles.
Loved the barrack was preheated when coming back from the adventures
Most of the overpriced tours in Svalbard can pick you up from the hotel, and so can the airport shuttle bus. The hostel is clean and reasonably kept, although rooms are small.
Exceptionally clean and comfortable
Kitchen available to prepare food and socialise with other guests
Hotel breakfast nearby
Very helpful and welcoming hostess
