A nice village with both a beautiful Czech National Park and a German national park nearby, and you can start hiking (is for me going uphill in nature) or cross-country skiing within 10-15 minutes walking from where I stayed.
It has a brewery hotel on top of a ski slope, not too far walking from the town center, for those who love hiking. It hosts a number of restaurants, and Asian and Thai massages are an option as well.
It is also a good starting point for cycling in the two national parks.
Public transport for the Sumava national park towards the east is mainly by bus, and in the summer, and trains go mainly north toward Plzen and south into Germany, from where the train mainly goes either south or west, and to the east the bicycle or the bus can be used.
The historic twin station with the bordering German town has a nice restaurant with some nice beer on tap.

The bus stop enroute to Sumava National Park is about 500 metres away from the train station and has a frequency of every two hours during the season. The town has plenty of eateries with choice of local cuisine, Kebab corner and ever Viet cuisine. Cross Cafe was my haunt for coffee and quick snacks.

Very small, comfy town every better - village :) Few small food stores, one of them working until 22.00, most restaurants close at the same time.
Food quality would recommend - cafe Snehurka, restaurant Ne Nadrazi. Do not recommend - restaurant Ostry (very low quality and high prices).
Easy to move around on the bicycles, many paved tourist routs almost all buses have bicycles trailers.
Great attractions: Devil's and Black lakes (Certovo and Cerne jezero), mountains Spichak and Pancir, any tourist rout around worth it to walk :)

Unfortunately the weather was not too much in favour of skiing. We managed only few last days. Also, we were welcomed by a storm and hotel stayed without electricity one night, the very night when my son was sick so it was a nightmare trying to cope. but that was not in power of the staff. if not the place is ok, there is another horizoont hotel nearby relly lovely with a great kid's club,
I came to teach my 4y old ski. I would definitelly recommend for that purpose to others. there are few skiing schools in neighbourhood with good reviews.

Marvelous nature with mountain lakes, old forests and fascinating landscapes. Nice small town. Good place to stay in winter if you want to ski\snowboarding or in summer for downhill and MTB in Spicak. The only thing which is disappointing is getting food in the evening - shops and most of the restaurants are closed after 19:00. Some restaurants are working later but they are quite expensive. Very poor culture of souvenirs. Almost nothing to buy.

Feels like a brand new accomodation or being carefully taken taken care of. The bathroom is really comfortable and well designed. The beds are very relaxing even the sofa in the livingroom is a perfect spot to sleep. The common areas in the hosue has a unique atmosphere with all the wooden work. Location is great with good restaurants nearby and the forest behind for peaceful morning walks with the dog. Which is no problem to travel with by the way. Thanks for everything we had a great time.
comfortable privately-owned apartment inside a residence building. Bedroom on the opposite end of Living room + kitchen. Spacious private patio connecting all rooms. very clean and furnished in a modern way. Centrally located in Zelezna Ruda, close to shops, an excellent Thai massage place and right next door to a great cafe with breakfast. Definitely recommend!
We spent a lovely week at Diana. The pension is set above the center of Železná Ruda, with a beautiful view of Großer Arber from the windows. The room was modest, but comfortable, with good quality mattresses. Every space was clean. The breakfast was very good, with the quality exceeding the average encountered in pensions like that one.
Perfect accommodation in the center of the little town of Železná Ruda. The host was very friendly, let us keep our luggage in the place before and after the check in/out since we needed to pack light to go to the mountains. Large shared kitchen and great communication with the host also appreciated.
One of the best isolated place for an hotel, sorrounded by nature, amazing landscapes and wonderful view from the terrace
The room ais cozy, modern, clean and stylish. the bathroom elegant and spacious.
The lounge bar has a nice design of forniture, is cozy and the service is very efficient
The room was comfortable and big enough. Breakfast offered enough choice even for a vegetarian ( I loved the choice of different nut-butter). We had dinner as well, which was tasty but on the price-level in Prague. The hotel has a sauna and a gym - we tried both, and cannot complain.
Sauna in the room is absolutely awesome. Spacious parking. Special place for storing skis, special place for drying clothes and boots. Room was quiet, haven't heard neighbors at all. Very welcoming host. Nice breakfast, more variety than you'd expect from hotel with similar size.
The landlady is a nice person. By the way---she is into the Falun Gong. The family also runs a Vietnamese restaurant in the same building. We had a good (and cheap) dinner there.
The location is very good for trips and hiking around Železná Ruda. We definitely recommend it.
Location is good if you are traveling by car. Zelezna ruda and all the ski lines are 3-7 km away. If you want to sledge on snow, search for one of the ski lines which are not used that day. Breakfast and dinner were ok, but do not expect anything extra - just ok.
I liked the availability of common kitchen in this hotel. The kitchen was clean and has plenty of kitchenware. Rooms are spacious and there is quiet at night even if it is the railway station. View from the window is great.
The location of the hotel was perfect, next to the forest and very close to city center. It was only 30 min walk down the hill to reach the city center through the forest. The staff was very helpful and cooperative.
The location is great, very close to the Špičak railway station, the road to the hotel is good. You can rent a bike just on the spot. The breakfast was fine with diversity of options. The quality of meal is high.
Perfect friendly staff, good breakfast, nice location with private parking. You can take skibus to reach the ski resort. It goes from the door of the hotel. It was brother warm in the room.
Comfortable bed and quiet location. We chose this hotel due to 24 hour reception as we arrived after midnight, and also because it was directly on our route. Breakfast was really good.
Pleasant accommodation near the center of Železná Ruda. Family-like hospitable atmosphere, tasty breakfasts, wine bar with a wide selection of Moravian wines.
