Life By the Ocean Wave
From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

Very little parking in the centre. Plymouth is quite hilly for those with limited mobility. The little Barbican Theatre is great. Centre can get a bit lairy after Plymouth Argyle have played at home.

Plymouth Hoe is a wonderful place to walk plenty of history.to indulge in. The barbican is a short walk from the Hoe where you will find restaurants and pubs. I would avoid the city centre until after the improvements are finished.

The city centre itself isn't very beautiful. However, the city part near the old harbour is quite nice. And Plymouth serves very well as a starting point for trips to adjacent cities and towns in Devon and Cornwall. There are very good bus and train connections, even outside the touristic season. The landscapes in Devon and Cornwall are quite beautiful indeed, with gently rolling hills and marvellous seasights!AgnesNetherlands - 10Scored 10
Really interesting place full of history.
Really interesting place full of history. Everywhere was clean and so many different paths and steps allowing access to the sea shore and old buildings. Huge amount of restaurants covering all types of food for every taste. Views were amazing and so close to many nature areas. Many ferries travelling all over the coast to islands, historic docks and secluded beaches. Only downside for small children would be the lack of a sandy beech.

The older town area where we stayed is lovely & near to the iconic Hoe & Barbican. Sadly the town of my youth is soul less due to so much "concrete", however work is proceeding to revamp the old boulevards with paving, seating & flower beds so in the coming months it will be far better. Like all towns some of the larger department store buildings & banks are no longer and stand empty - once they are redeveloped it will be much better Very easy to get around walking, no need to use public transport for shops, hoe & barbicanPaulaUnited Kingdom

I chose to have breakfast in the morning, I have to say that it was the best hotel breakfast I have ever experienced. So much variety, from Cereals, cooked breakfast, cold cheese and meats, fruit and yoghurts, waffles, pastries, coffee and juice. Honestly was exceptional, will most definitely be returning

Comfortable rooms with good bathroom and facilities such as coffee making and decent towels. Breakfast freshly cooked with great coffee and a good choice served by friendly staff. A great location for the Pavilions, Theatre Royal, the Hoe, the Barbican and town shopping. We visit Plymouth a few times a year for shows and will definitely book again in preference to any of the bigger hotels and national chains.

It was close to the theatre and also a lovely local pub not to mention Plymouth Hoe. The staff at the hotel were superbly helpful, particularly as I am severely sight, impaired along with my friend who was also on this trip.
