FAQs about hotels in Plymouth

Life By the Ocean Wave

From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.

Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.

At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.

Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.

Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

We stayed to visit our daughter and partner while they are at Uni in Plymouth. We stayed with our dog Lara. Property was few step down to accommodation (we have seen worse) good area to dry Lara before letting her in to lounge /dinner through to bed room to the right bathroom to the left into kitchen This is a great location 2 min to Hoe, 10 min at most to Barbican. The host are amazing, really accommodating after a long journey. The welcome pack is so welcome just to get a tea or coffee and milk, every thing was there, including shower gel, shampoo, conditioner hand wash, washing up liquid to name but a few treats . Quite a few places could take note. If cleaning product available most people will help to keep it clean. We would defiantly stay there again. Thank you so much

The Hoe and Barbican areas are lovely and definitely worth visiting. The Barbican area is great for eating out and a stroll along the Hoe is a must. The Royal William Yard is also a pleasant and interesting place to visit. The modern city centre is quite tatty and run down so worth avoiding.

Lots of shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes all within walking distance and a bit of everything you could want or need! A mix of chain places and smaller, independent and a real lively atmosphere even during the week! Highly recommend Monty’s cafe on the Barbican!

Some great gems in and around the Barbican.

Some great gems in and around the Barbican. It is a city under scaffolding and behind hoardings. Hopefully it will reinvent itself soon, but in the meantime walking can dull (if not threatening). It has a long drawn-out centre, For example, 25 minute walk or a Taxi from the Barbican to / from the station at £7.50

The location was fantastic right on Plymouth Hoe and close to everything needed (pub, shops, city centre). The hosts, Pete and Andy, were brilliant. They communicated well before, during and after our stay and were very helpful with parking, which was really convenient. The apartment is clean and lovely with nice towels and comfy beds. Also great for dog owners due to a secure garden which was perfect. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a stay in Plymouth

Staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. Always happy to help with any issues or questions. Comfortable bed and great view from both the room and restaurant. Breakfast was good, with a wide specialist selection alongside the standard full English. Reception staff are knowledgeable about both the hotel and the area. The location was great for reaching the harbour and other city center points of interest. Definitely the best choice for a hotel in central Plymouth.

Very nice family run hotel, modern and classical decor. I found them very helpful and informative, Situated in a very historical part of plymouth central, the views of the sea and harbour at the end of the road was simply breathtaking. Home of the Mayflower pilgrims, Francis Drake, Charles Kingsleys famous book 'Westward Ho" was written in Hoe, which is the name of the town that the hotel is situated. .

Beautiful gardens and scenery…very quiet, a perfect location to immerse in nature and explore Darmoor and Devon. the hosts are so friendly, trying to make everything perfect.. They gave excellent suggestions about the interesting sights around. Excellent for walks to the river the dam and the countrside. We used this as base to explore Plymouth, Looe, Penzance, Landes End, St Ives and Newquay.
