Hailsham is small but has quite a few independent shops (as well as 3 supermarkets)and nice cafes (AJs does a wide range of coffees and smoothies) and a very good Indian restaurant in the High Street. It is the perfect place to stay for getting to places of interest. Drusillas zoo is a 10 minute drive away. Alfriston village which is the oldest village in Sussex is 15 minutes by car. From here you can do beautiful walks on the South Downs Way or walk along the stream (national trust trail) from behind the Clergy House. Hailsham is cheap to stay in and use as a base for visiting the many local places of interest.

Off road.
Off road. Set back in a nice garden space, the hosts live in the adjacent house always available but never intrusive, lovely garden planting, places to sit around the lawn, a patio and chickens in a coop, really enjoyed the space felt cozy and secluded. You do need a car, there is a small village shop but also a supermarket within two miles, the local pub does tasty meals

Hailsham is a quiet market town some miles inland from.the resort towns of Eastbourne and Brighton.
As a town it doesn't offer much in the way of tourist attractions, but near to Herstmonceux observatory science park, some lovely Sussex villages ,and history Hastings about 20 miles away.

We loved the countryside, surrounded by nature. The relaxing atmosphere was exactly what we needed. Everyone noticed the tranquility and felt at peace there. A lovely seating area outside to watch the beauty of our surroundings.
All the rooms were lovely. Well equipped and extremely comfortable. There was a laundry room too which was a very useful space. The kitchen was very well equipped too. Lovely lighting in the lounge, and dining area. Separate entrance to rest of the house. Parking outside was very convenient. Hosts were excellent in every way. When we contacted them nothing was too much trouble. They recommended a couple of restaurants that were excellent.

We stay in this area when we are going to Glyndebourne - so we don't visit it for its own sake. It is convenient for opera-goers, and handy for Eastbourne, for local attractions such as Herstmonceux castle and observatory or Bluebell railway. As a town there is nothing remarkable. We have found some nice pubs and places to eat nearby, such as the Village Shop in Upper Dicker and the Berwick Inn. Hailsham is handy for exploring the South Downs.
This is a first class property, very well appointed and with a great deal of space. We particularly liked the welcoming touches by our host Jane, including a few essentials and snacks. The property was warm, clean and had all the equipment and facilities one could want. The quiet location was great for walking the dog from the doorstep and yet close enough to the Hailsham bypass to get out and explore easily. The Downs and coast are just a short drive away.
Authentic English style. Very good breakfast. But a stay with mixed feelings. Extremely high rating on booking, so thereby also high expectations, which unfortunately aren’t completely fulfilled. Maybe my expectations were simply too high for 120 Pounds a night for a 2-star hotel. Dear Philip and Nicky, this is not meant to be rude, but simply my Dutch feeling. I will try to explain below:
The staff were friendly but unfortunately, my bedroom was situated next to an alleyway leading to car park and there was some kind of loading or delivering going on from about 4 am. Also very noisy when guys coming back to the hotel who were obviously working nearby...slamming of doors, shouting etc.
Apart from this, the room was lovely and clean and the staff great.
As soon as we checked in we felt very welcome. It came as no surprise that our room and private bathroom were spotlessly clean, and comfortable.
There was a great choice for breakfast, cereals, fresh fruit and juices. Our cooked breakfast was spot on.
The Olde Forge is a little gem of a Hotel and would not hesitate to recommend to friends & family..
Host was very helpful, made the whole stay very relaxed and enjoyable. Breakfast was exceptional with service to attention and care I have only received in 4 star hotels. Room very clean, with decor especially bathroom unique and high quality. Very quiet and relaxing area and transition for Covid-19 compliance was exceptional.
The property is in an ideal location for staying in the area near gun hill for weddings. Close enough to get a bus or a taxi to the station as well as to the venue. Clare was an exceptional host and the room was spotless. Excellent breakfast from her and Gavin and I felt very attended to.
the Forge Hotel was so quaint and well kept, it was spotless. We loved the feel of the hotel and lovely character, we were greeted by a lovely couple, so friendly and helpful, we stayed for our evening meal…absolutely gorgeous, fillet steak cooked to perfection, the food was amazing 😍.
Good parking adjacent to the hotel. The hosts were very friendly. The hotel itself was spotless.
There was a plentiful supply of biscuits and several options of drinks in the rooms. Very comfortable bed. Fresh fruit and croissants as well as usual fare for breakfast.
Everything... Great location, staff really friendly. We decided to have dinner at the hotel and it didn't disappoint. We had a family room and it was spacious, clean and comfortable. Would recommend and would go back. Thank you
It was an excellent B&B in a lovely location. An excellent breakfast with friendly service. A nice touch was having fresh milk available for tea - I hate having to use UHT in my tea as you do in most hotels.
We stayed over an hot spell and there were room fans available to borrow in the corridor.
Nearby Indian, 'The Royal' was excellent. Our room was over the bar and still quiet enough for a good night's sleep.
Slept very well, V Nice clean and warm room. Ideally situated in the centre of Hailsham and parking very easy. Staff friendly and very helpful. Nice friendly bar with good food at reasonable prices
The house is situated in such an amazing & peaceful location. The host and service I received was exceptional. This is definitely a must go place if you’re staying in Hailsham…
