FAQs about hotels in Exeter

A Host of History

Set around the Exe River, affluent Exeter has played a part in English history from the Roman era to William the Conqueror to the Spanish Armada. Its most impressive structure is the cathedral, begun in the 11th century and boasting the longest stone roof in England.

The surrounding green is a popular picnic spot, and the half-timbered buildings and red-brick façades of the neighbouring High Street house a host of shops. Even more are in the Princesshay and Guildhall shopping centres.

The Guildhall itself is considered England’s oldest municipal building still in use, while nearby Parliament Street is one of the world’s narrowest streets. The remains of 11th-century St Nicholas Priory are now a museum, and there are more red-stone ruins at hilltop Exeter Castle (or Rougemont Castle), built into the Roman walls.

Exeter Central Station is behind the castle, while St Davids Station is nearer the university. The large student population means that the city has good nightlife, and some bars are located by the Quayside, site of Custom House. The river flows past Topsham and Powderham Castle to enter the sea at Exmouth.

To the east are Exeter Airport and the Westpoint Arena exhibition centre, both easily reached from Booking.com’s hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

First time visiting Exeter. A lovely city.

First time visiting Exeter. A lovely city. Lots of interesting places, especially round the Quay area, and many classy shops and cafes. Its also within easy reach of Topsham, which is very quaint, and had lovely cafes and bars. The Firehouse is an excellent trendy eating place there. We just walked into Exeter, but it has plenty of parking places. We also visited Dawlish, another quaint town, with a great pie shop. Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton are also interesting. Our grandchildren loved the picturesque golf course at Exminster, and nearby Turf pub, which you can drive or cycle to, which is open only during the day, as parking is difficult, but its friendly, and serves good food. The Mill on the Exe is next to the property, and serves good food and has comfortable seating, and friendly staff. Also The Prospect Inn on the Quay has great food, and a buzz about it. There are several real ale places on the Quay in Exeter, and pizza vans nearby.

Exeter is a medieval city with Roman remains, and although bombed during WWII it retains many unusual features. Like all uk provincial cities the economic climate has hit hard, however there is still lots to enjoy. Foodies will love STAGE a new restaurant in Magdalen Rd which is exceptional and I predict it will be incredibly successful. Exeter cathedral is wonderful. There’s also the beautiful river Exe that opens out to the Estuary town of Topsham, well worth a visit, the quay area in Exeter is interesting with many historical features. Exploring the area on foot and enjoying foodie venues off the beaten track is the secret to a fun visit.

Went to visit a relative never been to Exeter before and only there for one day, much bigger than I thought it would be with lots of tourist and places to see. Will definitely go for longer next time. The high street had no closed shops and stores open that have been closed in other cities and a lovely John Lewis, lovely place to eat. Buses frequently and Taxis easy to locate if needed. Are at the Brew Dog . Nice burgers own brewed lagers for nice. The Quayside has lots of independent craft shops and places to eat and grab a coffee, would think a lovely place to visit in the summer. Will return

Only stayed for one night but had a lovely evening in the town, visiting the Ivy for dinner and the Christmas markets. Plenty of shops if we'd had time to explore more and would love to go back to visit the cathedral. Managed to walk around very easily and there's a good atmosphere in the centre.

We went with a group of friend's to visit the excellent Christmas Market and had a 2 night stay. Lovelly hotel. Great location. Good breakfast. Totally let down by the hotel bar. Service very very slow. Kept running out of beer, no pino grigot, ran out of plymouth gin, ran out of Jamesons, ran out of brandy. Bar was poorly stocked. Same on day 2. Coffee machine broke down. Kind of spoilt our visit.

WE booked for three, so we were given two bedrooms. Both rooms had a wonderful view of the city laid out over the hill. There was plenty of tea/coffee options in the room. The location of The Telstar is great, just a short walk from Exeter St David's and the city centre. It was also within walking distance of the University where we were headed. We opted for the breakfast which was wholesome and delicious! I quite liked their green initiatives. I would say our stay was cosier than if we had stayed at a hotel.

Express Holiday Inns are by their nature frills free. However, they are excellent value. The Exeter Hotel is well sited and near many city services and attractions. There is am incline to the city centre but easily walkable. All staff were friendly, efficient and highly competent. The seem a happy team. The breakfast menu was varied and plentiful. A super stay.

Well located hotel for accessing the centre of Exeter, but difficult when you have a car. The parking is in a public car park over the road, and the system for paying (and getting a discount) is a bit of a nuisance. Nice buffet breakfast, but not exceptional. Room was spacious enough and the bathroom was clean & well provisioned.

Good location for city centre with parking opposite, really friendly staff. Room compact but comfortable with a nice shower, loo and sink. Nice busy buzz in the bar with a band playing when we returned in the evening. Our room was above the drum kit so we joined in the fun!! Nice full English breakfast in the morning.
