We stayed in Pontresina for 5 nights in early October.
We stayed in Pontresina for 5 nights in early October. It is a charming town. We arrived by train, and Pontresina makes an excellent place to stay if you want to experience the Bernina Express train journey.
The railway station is within walking distance of most of the accommodation, but it would be a struggle with luggage. Our hotel had its own vehicle for transfers, I think most hotels offer the same.
When we were there (early October) most of the other travellers were Swiss. While there were plenty of options in terms of restaurants, most visitors were outdoor/ nature loving folk who went for a quiet meal in the evening and then got a good night’s sleep. So the town was very quiet at night, which suited us perfectly.
A pass for local transport: trains/ busses/ furnicular railways/ cable cars was included in our hotel tarrif, and this was fabulous. From Pontresina we walked to St Moritz one day and enjoyed the St Moritz cable car, then returned to Pontresina by bus. On another day we caught the train Bernina Diavolezza and the cable car to view the Morteratsch Glacier. We used the “Komoot” app to find other hikes.

I love everything about Pontresina, the lovely village, the options for excursions and hiking, the views, the nice cafés & tearooms, the museum, music in Taiswald, the Bellavita swimming pools & sauna world, free of charge public transport, the weekly market Laret, cultural program, friendly people especially if one speaks the dialect or Romantsch..., the list is endless.

It was a starting point for the cross country ski race.
It was a starting point for the cross country ski race. It is easily accesible by train which is a big plus. There was a place to spent some time before start. It is also a nice starting point for many cross country ski routes in Engadin.

Both hotelandbooking.Com miss lead on the ability to bring pets. This was the primary reason I chose the property, the fine print only becomes available after you’ve booked.

Pontresina is just one of many pretty villages in the upper Engadine, which is among our favourite places in Switzerland because of its elevation, climate, sights and attractions. It is not as touristy and overbuilt as St Moritz, yet has all the amenities to make for a pleasant stay: choice of accommodations and restaurants, coffee shops, retail, guides and outfitters, etc.
It is centrally located with easy access to the valleys of Pushlav, Bergell or the lower Engadine by car or public transport. A great place for those who love nature, mountains, beautiful scenery, amazing outings by rail or post bus, superb fall colours, hiking and mountaineering in summer or skiing in winter. Numerous chairlifts, cable cars and mountain railways in the region offer easy access to spectacular views of the southern alps.

Pontresina is well situated, right on the Bernina Express line and basically near the confluence of the Bernina and Inn rivers, with easy access to the valley of the Inn and the valleys to the south going to the Italian border. Make sure to stay 2 or more nights and get the Engadin card that includes Bergbahn (mountain trains, e.g., trams, funiculars, chair lifts, gondolas and cable cars) so that you have access to all the wonderful high mountain areas in the region at no additional cost. In summer it is hiking paradise, in winter a winter sport hub, and in the fall is ablaze with golden larches.
We had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Walther! The room and facilities (especially the spa area) were great, and the breakfast had a huge selection for every taste, as well as some great local products! I would like to especially mention the staff at the hotel and restaurants, who were simply impeccable, professional and friendly. The owners are always available, and took the time to welcome us, check in with us during dinner and say goodbye when leaving the hotel, which I've never seen before at a hotel of this size. 10/10
The hotel has a charming, traditional atmosphere though has obviously been refurbished and looked after. The breakfast choice was excellent. We ate dinner here which delicious and good value. The spa was super clean, light and welcoming with a fairly large swimming pool and well laid out spa area.
Their are walks from the hotel or the hotel will take you down to the train station (a fifteen minute walk) from where you can catch a train to destinations along the Bernina line.
Pontresina is a good location. I got off the Bernina Express from Torino, Italy. There is a grocery store down the hill near by. Buses 60m from the hotel go to and from the train station. Also, I was able to take the bus to Samedan and to Punt Muragl funicular. I took the train to St Moritz and got on the Glacier Express there. If I were to stay longer I could have enjoyed many hikes and nearby places by train.
Breakfast starts early (7 am) with a great buffet. The option to eat breakfast at Alp Languard is cool. Good food available for dinner. Bike storage and cleaning station very useful. Location of the hotel is great. The Engadin Card with public transports and cablecars was included. We never used the car to go anywhere and we payed 26.- instead of 105.- for all day bike tickets up to Piz Nair!
phenomenal location - a beautiful 7 km walk to the hotel (no cars). then a awe inspiring walk up the the moraine of the glacier the next day. than a walk back to pontresina
traditional Swiss food and room with a great view. this is a opportunity to be up in the mountains and still have a great room and food. do not miss it
A fabulous hotel, full of old world charm and in a wonderful location. The staff were so friendly and accommodating, nothing was a problem and every request was greeted with a smile. A lovely mix of 5 star service with a friendly, family touch. One of the best hotels we've ever stayed in!
The hotel picked me up from the station which was great as I had some heavy luggage, The hotel is located on the main street in the centre of the village. All the staff I met were excellent particularly reception, the bar, the dining area and the room cleaning staff.
very comfortable room, view of mountains, bed mattress was excellent, bathroom was new, light and very clean, breakfast was tasty and of the standard expected, staff were very professional, friendly and helpful. I recommend this hotel to other travellers.
The location was excellent. The train station which was just a few steps from the hotel. The lovely woods around the hotel and the brook flowing right through the woods. It was a charming property.
Beautiful people manage and staff this hotel, fantastic location, a very special place. This is a real experience of nature and beauty. I will be coming back probably annually.
Beautiful location, hiking and glacier right outside the door of the hotel!
Free passes to sites and trains in the area made this stay an excellent value. We will be back!
