Karakol is a small, charming, village-like town located at the foot of the mountains. The views are spectacular, the air is tasty-fresh, the food is diverse and as organic as it gets; most importantly, people are open, welcoming, a little reserved at first, but ready to help once you approach them.
Infrastructure and buildings are decayed, but it only adds to the charm of the town if you are open to go through a little hardship here and there, especially if you are arriving from a megapolis.
Karakol offers a few interesting museums and galleries, but the main attraction is that it is an intermediary place to starting your journey exploring peaks, gorges, vallies, hot springs and all the other natural gems that Kyrgyzstan offers its guests. The town itself has very interesting history and a crazy mix of many ethnic groups (Kyrgyz, Ukrainian, Dungan, Russian, Korean, German, Uzbek, Uyghur, Tatar, etc). Find yourself a local friend (easier to do in Kyrgyzstan) and he/she will open up doors to many other amazing sides of Karakol.

You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination.
You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination. There is everything you may expect from Kyrgyzstan: lake Issyk Kul just a few Km from Karakol, amazing mountains with lost od different treks: one-day or multiple-day. I suggest to definitely climb to Ala Kol lake, visit Teleti valley or go up to the pass, immerse in hot springs in Altyn Arashan, or if you need a modern structure go to Ak-Suu thermal pools. Jeti-Ögüz is a 100% must see, or go to Jargalan valley and admire dozens of semi-wild horses, rent one of them and enjoy the view to the world from horseback. Buy some local hand-made products e.g. shirdak carpets, taste awesome local cuisine (esp. lamb, plov or manty) and don't miss local market in Karakol, wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral, unusual architecture of Dungan mosque or Sunday animal market in the town suburbs.

We stayed in Karakol for 2 nights - before and after our hike to Ala Kol lake. I would recommend bringing camping gear from your home country as the shops in Karakol aren't great. There are companies though that you can rent tents, cooking gear etc. if you prefer. Karakol has few cafes and restaurants (we tried Cat Cafe and Meeting Point) aimed for overseas travelers but also places to try local culinary (unfortunately the highly recommended place was closed for Eid).

The town is very flat and was not what we expected.
The town is very flat and was not what we expected. It had all the things we needed (restaurants, convenience stores, petrol stations) and was easy to get around. The museum was well worth the visit. The cathedral we only saw the garden and outside. It was a lovely unique piece of architecture. The real attractions are the mountain passes and valleys.
The family is lovely and helpful and each one of them is friendly 💜💜 its location near the city center, the room is clean, comfortable and quite, with a balcony and a clean private bathroom, and warm water, there were warm, clean, good blankets and covers, also they help us in our questions during our visit to Karakol 😁💜💜 if we came to Karakol in future with our friends we will choose for sure this sweet Janat family guesthouse 🥰😍🌷🌷.
Very lovely place with helpful staff. People come to Karakol for trekking in the nature, therefore the staff have very good connections with trekking organizations, transporters and ... so everybody can arrange a good hike with their help. they can arrange transport to Karakol valley and reserve Yurt if you want to do the Ala-Kul trekking. Rooms and kitchen facilities are good. Located in a good, safe and calm place.
I had an incredible stay at the hostel in Karakol! The personnel was super helpful and friendly, making me feel like home. The place was comfortable and clean. Vibe was good for relaxation and meeting new people. Between hikes I loved studying with laptop at the kitchen area. The cherry on top was the wonderful coffee machine that helped fuel my adventures during the day.
Highly recommended!
it is clean, eco-friendly and the staff were helpful and friendly..the hotel owner helped us in finding a tour guide who helped us explore the places in Karakol which was the highlight of our trip…the hotel has a very nice cafe where you can drink tea/coffee, eat good food and relax..it also has a small grocery where you can buy your basic needs..they also offer a nice massage onsite..
I had a great stay at Duet. The place is spotlessly clean, the dorms are comfy and so are the yurts. The food is amazing ( try the glorious beef strogonov) and the staff do their very best to make you love the place. They have a very informative folder with local attractions and hints on how to get around the area. This is absolutely THE place to stay on Karakol.
Yurts in a fruit tree garden with wifi and electricity, what more could you wish for? Hot water, tasty breakfasts (we've encountered pancakes or fried eggs) and an owner who can give advice about the mountain hikes and trips, arrange transport and so on. Within walking distance to Karakol center for shopping and eating.
This is among the nicest accommodations we have stayed at in Kyrgyzstan. It's located along the main street, but it's separated from the noise of the street.
The staff was incredible, breakfasts generous, and rooms VERY comfortable. The wifi was working great.
We would enthusiastically recommend Tagaytay!
I really like the whole hotel - it was very modern, very clean and the staff was incredible nice to me and try to make sure that my stay was as pleasant as possible. Very great breakfast with plenty of choices.
I looked around Karakol and can surely say, this was the best choice. Thanks Karagat Hotel Staff.
We had a wonderfully cozy stay in Karakol at this hotel - the location of the hotel is central enough, the room was both clean and comfortable, breakfast was tasty and the owner was very helpful in arranging for transport and also assisting with our laundry. Definitely a place we recommend staying at.
We spent quite a few nights in diferent rooms and in the yurt. We loved the time we spent in Arthouse, the place is great, rooms, kitchen and bathoroom are nice and spotless. Family are very nice and welcoming, they will help you with everything you need. Best place in Karakol for sure.
Modern and comfortable apartment in a central location with great views and it has everything you need. Excellent communication with the owner before and throughout the stay, he was always ready to help. Would definitely recommend staying here for those visiting Karakol.
The hosts are super nice! We forgot our mobile charger at their hotel and they organized that it was transported to us in Bishkek (free of charge). That was so nice! Thanks again! The rooms are modern and spotless clean. Inside parking is available.
I would like to thank the hotel staff for making my stay amazing. The staff was very polite and welcoming! The room was very clean and neat. I loved the breakfast very much. Definitely I'm coming back to Muras hotel.
Fabulous place to stay in Karakol. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming. The room, with ensuite, was spacious and clean, with good facilities. I would definitely recommend this as a great place to stay..
Great social option in Karakol, suitable for all ages. Lot of space, nice big yard and chill out area, the place is clean and well run.
Easy to meet other people to go hike with.
Would stay again.
I absolutely loved this little guesthouse in Karakol. Great location and the price can’t be beat. The owner was very helpful in offering advice on trekking in the region.
Great place in a good location. Nuri, the host, is very friendly and always tried to help us in everything we needed. If we come back to Karakol we will stat there
