We stayed in Obertraun as a base to explore Halstatt but...
We stayed in Obertraun as a base to explore Halstatt but found as our trip got closer that there was a lot more to do in Obertraun and Halstatt than originally thought so our one night stay turned out to not be long enough. If I were booking again I would definitely stay two or three nights so we could explore the salt mines, walks and view points.

We stayed in Obertraum so we could take the ferry to go to Hallstatt by ferry. The ferry ride was amazing, heavenly peace and tranquil. However, we did not know enough about the area. We found out from the ferry driver that there was an ice cave nearby and a skywalk. We could include that in our future trip.SilviaUnited States of America - 10Scored 10
Obertraun is probably the best place for easy access to...
Obertraun is probably the best place for easy access to Hallstatt (besides being in Hallstatt itself). Bike rentals are easy and the bike ride to Hallstatt is also easy with very little elevation change. Lots of biking in the area.

Perfect location, fantastic view to Hallstatt and the mountains. Easy to reach Hallstatt even with bicycle, Dachstein and mountains are also very close. Small village, quieter than the nearby Hallstatt.
Small village, quieter than the nearby Hallstatt. Can walk around everywhere on foot. Good for few days with public transport, longer than that you may want a car since there is only one restaurant ("Pizzeria") and buses come only once per hour.JessicaIsrael

It was raining, but the warm and caring welcome of the hostess Anna exceeded all expectations.We had a room with a wiew to alpine mountains with snow-capped peaks . Free parking of the car under the roof. Rich and tasty breakfast. Vielen Dank Frau Anna. Gediminas and Margarita P.S. The apatment is located only 3 or 4 km away from Hallstatt.

Our (seems like most) was a duplex. 2 floors (1st floor has guest VC, spacious hall to leave ones jackets, ski/snowboards, small kitchen, spacious living room with a small wood stove(!), 2nd floor had to bedrooms each with a bathroom). I guess it'd be a nice place to stay for a few days (we were on the move, so only stayed 1 night). Location is convenient to the lift and pier.

A bus between Obertraun and Hallstatt operates often for 2.50 euros or it’s an hour long walk. Near hiking trails and Dachstein Krippenstein.

Obertraun is a very nice and quaint town, we are really happy that we decided to go there instead of the busy and touristy Hallstatt! The room itself was clean, comfortable and generally very nice with its balcony. I really liked the breakfasts in the small kitchen, they felt really nice and cozy.

Their house has a beautiful location, walking distance to the lake and to the ferry point that connects Obertraun to Hallstatt. If Hallstatt is your main destination and you can’t find something in town, this is a great option in Obertraun. All in all, we had a very enjoyable stay!
