Matrei and the surrounding countryside mirror the pictures...
Matrei and the surrounding countryside mirror the pictures that are seen of Austria: it is beautiful. The town has two grocery stores and a very helpful tourist information center. It also has an interesting museum and a reasonable choice of restaurants.. We ate our evening meal in the hotel across the street ( where the breakfast included is eaten) and the food was good. Easy access from the main highway.

Nice small town. They have supermarkets and a bus stop.
Nice small town. They have supermarkets and a bus stop. For us it was our starting and end point of the Venediger Höhenweg. You need some planning to get to the right place by bus. Nice connection to the train station in Kitzbühel and Lienz. Also you can get by bus to the Matreier Tauern Haus and Ströden. Hitchhiking is also possible.

A very quiet village with amzing skiing.
A very quiet village with amzing skiing. Some small restaurants with excellent food and service. A perfect family place - not a party place.
The gasthaus Obwexer in centre is a perfect living, well situated and with walking distance to everything such as; supermarkets, bakery, restaurants and skiirenting. And not to forget the great service and welcome upon arrival. And last but not least the best of all: the skibus is right outside the frontdoor.
This is for families and for you who are tired of party and just want to relax in a quiet and nice surrounding. for you this is the perfect place! Lovely!
if your legs, knees or feet need a day of rest - take the bus into Lienz and walk around in this small town. and if the weather is nice and the sun is shining - bring your book and enjoy a coffee in the city centre square.

The host was very nice and friendly. We arrived at 3 am as my flight was delayed and it was no problem at all. Very nice and cosy room in a beautiful Austrian house. Breakfast was delicious with many home-made options. The property is located less than 5 minutes drive and ~10mins walk from the Matrei-Kals cable car (I think you could ski down nearly all the way back, but I wasn't there during the ski season). Overall, it was a better experince than a 5* hotel for me and would certainly recommed for anyone going for a holiday to Matrei.
Beautiful decor, well-furnished, comfortable, and a fantastic view of mountains from our balcony (see photo). There are two one-bedroom units on the top floor of a family home. They can be rented separately or together as one larger unit, which is what we did. The larger unit haa a kitchen that was furnished with a superb set of cookware and dishes. The other unit has a smaller kitchenette. Frau Mattersberger is very hospitable, but with limited English. I don't know if I will ever return to Austria, but if I do, I want to stay here!
One of the best places we have stayed during our 8 days trip in Austria. We are a couple that really enjoy being in the nature and going for good hikings. This is the best place to stay if you are looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to relax. In the following day we went for one of the most beautiful hikings of our lifes: the hiking 921 to the glacier. A must go!
The staff of the hotel were amazing! The food, beer and energy of the place even better!!!
This is not a 5star hotel in the city, so don't expect that kind of luxury. Luxury here comes from the incredible location, spectacular view and the character of an old traditional house. Konrad and his wonderful wife took such good care of us, our food allergies were all very carefully taken into account and the food was absolutely delicious! This kind of heart-warming hospitality is very rare.
The hotel is located directly at the bus station in Matrei. The rooms are exceptionally large and the furniture made from light wood appears very welcoming. Some rooms have a balcony.
The breakfast is all right. There are hotels which serve better food, however it does the job nicely, if you're not completely spoiled.
The apartment was very clean, with a recently renovated kitchen. Views from the balcony were stunning. Location is perfect for someone who wishes to stay just outside the town. Neighborhood was calm and quiet. We loved the animals around the house. The hostess is a lovely lady and always available for assistance.
The breakfast was excellent and walking across the street took no longer than going from a room in the hotel to the dining room. The room was spacious and comfortable; it obviously had recently been renovated. The owner was very nice and made us feel welcome.
This place was a nice little rest stop. My husband and I were driving upto Salzburg and stayed here for one night when we visited Austria.Bed was very comfortable and the woman that we were dealing with was lovely and extremely friendly.
Very friendly owner, always helpful, supportive and always available. The hotel is located in the center of the city, close to the restaurants and shops. Rooms are quiet, no noise from outside, good beds, great breakfast.
Excellent stay at Hotel Montana. Perfect location with a short drive to the Goldried gondola or a quick walk. Tons of breakfast options. Room was huge. Beautiful views all across the valley. Ample parking out front.
It was possible to park the motorcycle in the garage at no extra charge.
Quiet surroundings.
50 meters away restaurant.
Great view from the window.
Private parking at the hotel.
capsule coffee machine.
Staff were very friendly and service oriented, despite the language barrier. The room was clean and spacious. Great view from the balcony.
Dinner at the hotel restaurant was delicious.
Really quiet and rural - just outside the town. The farm is an added plus. The apartment was very comfortable. Kitchen was great as was the balcony. The view also spectacular.
