Skiing in Graukougel is a must. Fine dining at Bertahof, just north of Bad Gastin, is strongly recommended, fantastic Austrian food experience. Table reservation is needed. Eat at Schmaranz in Bad Hofgastein, everything localy produced at the farm. You'll eat by the open fire where the food is cooked. A place for meat lovers.

Bad Gastein used to be the place to be in the mountains until 60 years ago. The architecture reflects this, beautiful belle epoque buildings everywhere.
Unfortunately Bad Gastein wanted to become more "modern" in the 60-70ies. So they destroyed the village with awful buildings. The elegance was lost.
Since 20 years those mistakes are being corrected and from my point of view they managed to hide the worst "architectural disturbances" in the meanwhile. And you can already feel it: it´s alive again and again gives one the impression to be in an elegant, timeless place.
Also it seems that a new generation of hoteliers and restaurant owners is bringing some freshness into the village.
So i can clearly recommend: go and see!

We had skiied in the Ski Amade area before but not in Bad Gastein - it was a very special surprise. We chose it because the resort is at high altitude, and we were taking a chance on good snow conditions, mid December, but it exceeded our expectations. We'll definitely be back!!!

We came during off-season - so a lot of places were closed. But we still found excellent restaurants, and things to do - and, to be honest, enjoyed the quiet. There were too many great restaurants to mention - every experience was unique, either because of the tasty menu, the views or the ambience.
The walk along the waterfall is amazing! We walked up the path for the first time at night, coming home after dinner. It’s well maintained and well lit - my mom did it with ease at 83 years young!

Badgastein is a little gem in the Austrian Alps, with many options for a rejuvenating holiday. The paths in the mountains are enchanting, there is a ski center for winter sports, while the thermal waters feed the spas of many hotels, as well as the big municipal spa of this small town. There are regular connections by train to other parts of Austria and by bus to neighbouring villages.
The only "disadvantage" is that the typical cuisine of the area is not inspirational and the dining experience is not that high compared to the other services offered in the area.

We skipped one day skiing and went to the Alpentherme at the Bad Hofgastein, it was a great and relaxing experience. But too hot inside. The children under 16 could not use tha sauna complex, not much to do for teen boys there.
Lovely stay with a great location in Bad Gastein. We arrived by train, and it was a 5 min walk from the railway station. Also the lifts were only a short walk away as well as a big grocery store (Spar). The staff was helpful and very friendly. Breakfast was diverse and tasty and you could have a coffee of your choice. Really enjoyed the balcony of our room, nice views. Would stay here again when visiting Bad Gastein!
The Hotel is nicely designed, the facilities are made to enjoy the stay, e.g. pool, sauna, lobby, etc. Though my disappointment in how the hotel is managed, the personal, not all, is nice and polite, young staffers. Kitchen is good, we had dinner two nights, and despite the second night (we waited 1 hour long to get our meals!!!!!!), the meals were nicely cooked with good quality ingredients.
What an absolute pearl in the mountains of Bad Gastein. A historical Alm with an amazing ambiance, lovely staff and beautiful food. In summertime the Alm is accessible with your car. From the Alm you can go on adventurous hikes towards the Stubkogel mountaintop. We recommend this hotel for families, adventurous and sportive couples, and it's pet-friendly.
Great position near the center of Bad Gastein (about 10 minutes walk to the railway station, which is right where the ski resort and the amazing alpine view point lift are). Very friendly and helpful staff giving us tips what else we could do in Bad Gastein beside the obvious skiing and mountain top views. And we loved the balcony with mountain view! :)
I loved how huge the property was, including the long walk down scenic hallways especially to the fitness areas. The view from the room was incredible with the huge windows opening up to the mountains. The sauna and pool areas were absolutely fanastic. Right in the middle of Bad Gastein just up the street from the waterfall too.
Hotel rooms were spacious enough and provided good value for money. The rooms were clean and equipped with TV. The breakfast menu is enough to fulfill everyone's needs. Hotel offers a sauna and small pool, which can be reached by foot in about 50 meters. Moreover, you can stay with your pet, however it will cost you additionally.
The hotel is located smack-bang in front of Bad Gastein’s famed waterfall (which sounds like you’re inside the belly of a 747). The decor is a little aged, but has its 1960’s charm which I hope won’t be significantly affected by the renovations. The value is exceptional, considering the town is called the Monte Carlo of the alps.
The breakfast and dinner was phenomenal. The staff was very nice. The spa facility was great. The room was amazing, so big and so luxurious. Finally, the receptionists were very welcoming and incredibly friendly - making you feel at home. Special thank you to Renáta from the reception who made sure I had a pleasant stay.
- The hotel has a very convenient location, 3 minutes from the ski lift, supermarket and top restaurants.
- Very clean, room was cleaned every day.
- The room is spacious.
- The rooms have a kettle and coffee, but no tea. There is a refrigerator.
- Breakfast is standard for Austria, nothing special.
It was in the centre of everything that we needed (main ski lift, big shop nearby, restaurants & bars nearby). It was nice and quiet even though we were around the corner from the action.
The apartment was warm and comfortable, perfect for a couple. Bad Gastein offered a great ski area.
The location is excellent for the ski centre at Bad Gastein. A nice heated area for your boots and skis at the rear. Right across from the railway station and beside the spa. Room was clean and spacious and a nice balcony. Staff friendly and left luggage available too.
Das Schider is a clean and beautifully designed hotel in Bad Gastein. The room is perfect- good sized with incredible views. I loved the soaps, which were made in Austria. The bar featured local gins, and the breakfast had locally sourced food and jams.
Everyone at the hotel was very welcoming and accommodating.
once you find your way around, there are a few shortcuts you can take to avoid walking up the steep hill to the ski lift.
we could not fault anything about the time we spent here.
-stylish interior
-very friendly personnel, who makes you feel at home at all times
-cozy bar downstairs with excellent Austrian wines
-great location, close to the central station, the ski lifts and hiking trails.
-well equipped apartments
Great design, very attentive staff, great facilities (some even unexpected such as the great selection of board games, the hotel's cinema, or the daily activities on offer) and exceptionally spacious rooms (50sqm)!
The service was exceptional, the staff was very friendly and the rooms are very nice.
I highly Recommend to try this hotel out, you will not be dissapointed.
