Airport was difficult and unfriendly, no place to change money and no international ATM... so how do you even find money to take taxi? Ended up having to change with another friendly foreigner on the street. Que for the taxi was crazy long on our way back through the city a second time... china can sometimes be difficult to navigate. But we survived and made it through.

Urumqi is a bit too much.
Urumqi is a bit too much. Too many cars, too many mopeds, too much noise, not as clean as other Chinese cities I visited, not as well maintained.
I did manage to find a few nice restaurants with good food and people. There are a few good places to get excellent pastry.
For a big city as Urumqi is, there was really not that much to it.

The only thing there to see unless you have enough time for whole day trips, is the ethnic nationalities museum which has a wonderful collection of very well preserved mummies.
The famed great bazaar was being renovated so only a few shops open and be aware you need an app on your phone to do many of the purchases
We walked to the red hill and climbed to the pagoda , it's a 30 min walk and we were lucky a friendly Chinese man showed us the way and more or less lead us there.
There's nothing else, it's a dusty hot city very crowded

Ürümqi serves as a gateway to explore Xinjiang province however the city itself is more recently developed and IMO lacks distinctive features that make a place worth travelling to. That said, there are some good aspects, mostly the local produce and food is a bonus if you know what to look for and where to look

The museum is worth a visit but there's nothing else going on. The market that used to exist has been turned in to a tourist trap, hostels and bars that used to be there are closed, and there are way better cities in Xinjiang to visit.

Hotel manager on duty (Alisher) treated us very very well. He made everything very comfortable and very easy. We encountered a problem outside of the hotel and he handled it quickly and professionally. I would choose this hotel over any other in Urumqi.
I wanted to express my gratitude to the hotel reception staff who helped me rebook my plane tickets in difficult times. In particular, I would like to mention Mirshat, who was able to get the tickets re-issued.
Overall comfortable and busy hotel in the northern Urumqi outskirts. Nice breakfast buffet and evening dinner. Staff were generally attentive. All good apart from a smelly bathroom.
