Wernigerode is a picturesque small town worth visiting.
Wernigerode is a picturesque small town worth visiting. The main attraction (especially if not German) is the steam rail network of HSB with numerous routes of which the most preferred is the assent to the Brocken mountain. The town offers more attractions and places to see though. Food selection is rather limited and the dining hours typically German.

The big draw is the narrow gauge steam railway.
The big draw is the narrow gauge steam railway. There is also plenty of walking in the surrounding countryside. My interest is in mining history, and this is right in the centre of the mining area, with show mines including the Rammelsberg world heritage site. My other interest is in Romanesque architecture and the town is well situated for exploring the Strasse der Romanik - a trail of Romanesque churches, cathedrals and castles. Wernigerode itself is a very pretty town, and has been beautifully restored since reunification. it has a castle and a number of museums.

What a beautiful old town and a very handy base to explore the Harz area. A short walk to the Railway stations of both the Harz Railway where you can take a steam train to the Brocken summit - reputedly the home of witches, an the DB station where I would recommend a trip to nearby Goslar. There is one of those little tourist trains that can take you around the historic old streets in both towns. Wernigerode also holds outdoor music festivals in the Market Square in August.

Wernigerode is a small place which can be explored within a day including the castle grounds. It is also a good place for hiking in the Harz mountains as well as a good base to explore neighbouring villages like Goslar, Bad Harzburg and Vieneburg etc, all just under an hour train ride away. One can also do a day trip up to the Brocken, highest mountain in the Harz region, from Wernigerode with the special steam train.
The property is conveniently located in the center of Wernigerode. It's a historical house with eight apartments. The arrangement of the apartment we booked is more than perfect! The hosts took care of every detail in kitchen, bathroom and living room. They arranged a parking lot at a private parking just 200m away from the property.
Prior arrival we received the code for the door and could check in very easily. And on top of every convenience there was a bottle of nice dry Rotkäppchen sparkling wine as welcome drink!
I was hiking the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg and stayed at the Hotel Der Kräuterhof for one night. The staff were welcoming and helpful during my stay. My room was spacious, clean, quiet. The bed was comfortable. I enjoyed my evening meal, vegetable strudel, at the Hotel's restaurant. Breakfast was good however a little light one for someone who was hiking. I ordered a packed lunch which was fresh and consisted of two sandwiches, a piece of fruit, snack bar and a bottle of water.
The appartment was clean, tidy, modern and had everything we needed. Location was fine with friendly helpful residents. Local bus service was 5 minutes walk away and free with the tourist card (supplied when paying the tourist tax). Wernigerode is a nice town, we had plenty of rides on the HSB steam railway which shouldn't be missed, visited the miniature museum and the aircraft museum and again got discount with the tourist card. Definitely will be back.
beautiful traditional timbered hotel with very friendly staff. We loved our room, so sunny & quiet. Bathroom is small but very comfortable and very modern. One of the nicest bathrooms since a while. Very clean. Very comfortable beds. The breakfast buffet was also plenty with a large selection and was quickly refilled by friendly staff. even the castle was visible. We loved exploring the city, so so beautiful. We’d love to return.
Well located particularly for visiting the Hartz Mountain Railway or traveling by train being less than 5 minutes from the station for both railways. The hotel is only a short walk from the centre of Wernigerode. The room was warm and comfortable with good en-suite facilities. For the railway enthusiast the rooms at the front of the hotel overlook the locomotive depot of the HSB, which is quiet overnight.
Very tasty, varied and fresh breakfast, very central and picturesque location, and best of all a very welcoming, kind and helpful host. Lovely old wooden beams and structure. A view onto a central shopping street in Wernigerode. It felt a bit like staying in an old inn or tavern from a bygone era.
Frank is great.
We had some problems with a delayed train and he waited for us with no problem, and greeted us with a big smile when we arrived the city. He drew us some recommendations and helped us with some concerns we had in order to feel welcomed to Wernigerode.
We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights.
The oveall stay was wonderful, from the check in, through our whole stay.
Very kind and warm hospitality.
Very spacious and clean room and great breakfast.
An excellent rural German guest-house. Charming, clean, and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the breakfast. It was great to be able to park easily. Very convenient for exploring Wernigerode.
Location, efficient friendly staff in hotel and restaurant. In the restaurant the little train that delivers your drinks is fun and so unique. A bonus.
