There are lots of hiking and biking opportunities in the area. Cross-country skiing would also be good but snow is unreliable these days at this altitude. I did a circular walk to Tanne (nice farm shop and cafe) and Sorge. Be aware that there is a lot of deforestation in the Harz area due to bark beetle, so it can look a bit sad - hopefully better forest management in future will allow regrowth.
Also took a bus day trip to Quedlinburg. There is a regular bus service to many points and occasional services on the Harz rail system, e.g. to Wernigerode, Brocken, Nordhausen.
The options to eat out in town are limited at times. Pizza/pasta in the town is open most days and evenings.

It’s a good base for hiking.
It’s a good base for hiking. There are two supermarkets in the town and two restaurants (both closed on a Tuesday). The main streets seem a little lacking in character (compared to other nearby towns). We didn’t eat at the pizza restaurant but Hexenhaus was excellent. I like the general area but would probably stay in another town next time.
