1-2 days maximum is more than enough. Food their is great and beautiful coffee, but do keep in mind everything is expensive as it is a tourist spot. Otherwise great location to visit. I visited Huka falls and Wairakei terrace hot pools which was an amazing experience.

Good selection of activities and a beautiful lake to swim in or take a boat ride. Many choices of restaurants and cafes serving up good tasty food. Lots of retail shops catering for clothing, souvenirs, charity shops, churches and a great library.

Was not in Taupo long but what I saw looked good. Smaller town with a nice atmosphere. Plenty of places to eat, things to see and do. Getting around Taupo in peak hours is a challenge so time your travel.

We just wanted the best affordable accommodation as we were passing through to spend the day with family then returned again the next night. Loved having a comfortable and spacious hotel type room to relax in after a long drive.

The local buses need to run later into the nighttime.
The local buses need to run later into the nighttime. Restaurant and Fast Food place sort of central in about 4 blocks. Huka Falls Jet and Rapid Jet need to consider a shuttle service from downtown Taupo because it is dare for a Uber ride and even darer for a Taxi. My favourite place to eat was Portofino Taupo, their service was exceptional.
V warm n cosy hospitality - room and staff.. Loretta extremely accomodating, helpful to help us check on whitewater rafting, and was v patient with our enquiries on dinner and grocery options, next morning she even helped us book skydive 8am and called to inform us, she also put us standby list for whitewater ratfing. Jac very warm and helpful in following up white water rafting unfort we could make it next day.
Great location - just cross a road to lake taupo and its walking distance to town - lotsa restaurants.
Fantastic location, only 5 minutes walk into the centre of Taupo. The motel was across the road from Lake Taupo with plenty of off road parking. The room was modern with a comfortable bed and a large bathroom. There was outside space to sit and have coffee and a lovely kitchen area with ample equipment. The couple who ran it were really lovely and when I left my travel wallet they checked everywhere and eventually found it and kept it safe until I returned to collect it.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Lake Taupo apartments, located opposite the lake and a short drive from town. The apartment was spacious, modern and comfortable, the kitchen in particular was well equipped for anyone wishing to self cater. The bedroom and bathroom had extra blankets and towels and a washer/dryer and ironing facilities, always handy when travelling! We also had a nice verandah to relax and unwind at the end of the day.
beautifully set up, furnishings were lovely, very comfortable bed, fantastic location - view over the lake, quiet location, easy drive to the lake, local shops and Taupo itself.
All the little extras were a nice touch - so much nicer than a normal motel room, and so spacious.
We would love to have made use of the outdoor area / bbq, but it wasn’t the weather for it. very warm and cosy j side though!
Highly recommended!
Super friendly staff -- the owners run the place themselves -- and a delightful garden with space aplenty for all the guests. It's one block from the shore of Lake Taupo. The presence of geothermal hot water means that rooms have a spigot to their own quickly-filled patio hot tubs, which is an amenity like few I've ever encountered. The building itself is older and a bit creaky, but even that has its charm.
The location was perfect - opposite the Hole in One ⛳. The park, #LOVETAUPO sign and town were within walking distance.
We had an upstairs room (Room 27) with our own private balcony, and views of the lake. The room was very modern, clean and comfortable. The gardens added that unique touch to the motel especially when walking to the indoor pool and spas.
The receptionist was lovely and very accommodating.
Honestly, this was definitely one of the best motels I’ve stayed in. The motel was right in front of Lake Taupo and it made me feel so refreshed. The staff were just so polite and friendly, they greeted me every morning I would see them. The location is amazing because it’s near restaurants and shops, you could even walk there. I definitely recommend this motel for those coming to Taupo, so comfy!
We loved everything about our time at Acacia Cliffs. The home is lovely with an incredible view of Lake Taupo. Neil was a wonderful host, and we enjoyed spending time in the morning chatting with him. Unfortunately, Neil’s wife Stephanie was out of town visiting family, so we didn’t get the chance to meet her. We hope to return at some point in the future!
Our first choice of Taupo accommodation.
Small personable motel but plenty of room inside each unit.
Always spotlessly clean.
Comfy bed, good pressure in shower.
Short walk (less than 5 mins) to lakefront and town centre.
Love the fact you get a text when your room is ready. It's ideal for travellers who may arrive before normal permitted entry of 2pm.
This is one of the best motels we have stayed in. It was modern, well maintained with quality fittings. The bed was excellent. The furniture in the spacious lounge was comfortable and the unit was air - conditioned. Right on the lake front in Taupo the unit we had was set back from the road so was quiet. We would definitely stay here again.
Fantastic location, great spa bath, comfortable bed, excellent air conditioning unit that doesn’t dry out your throat or blow directly on you and lovely private balcony with views of the lake. We’ve stayed at many hotels in Taupo over the years whenever we’re in the country and this is definitely one of the best so far!
One of our favourite hostels we stayed in. The private room was small but perfect. 2 toilets and showers per 4 rooms. Lovely big kitchen and dining area, and nice smaller area to chill out in. There's a board with free/cheap suggestions of what to do in Taupo. Lovely garden with hammocks, and a very cute hostel dog.
Stunning property situated on the river that runs from Lake Taupo to the Huka Falls. The main lodge is beautifully appointed and provides seating and dining areas inside and outside. The rooms are equally wonderfully, each having access to a Porch, rolling grass and the river view.
It is across the road from Lake Taupō, and could be seen from the warm pool and spa. After my stay, I had planned to visit my friend in Taupō but because of the Auckland floods she couldn't make it back in time. The motel owner allowed me to stay the extra night for free.
My family holiday in Taupo every year, we have been staying at Le Chalet Suisse for the past 10 years. It has everything we need, pool, spa, spa bath, beautiful view of the lake, great staff, and amazing location, easy walking distance to town and resturants.
The rooms were huge with a small kitchenette, access to laundry in the hotel and the pool / hot tub area was fabulous. Easy access to the lake beside the hotel and a fabulous walk along the lake also.
This is our favourite motel as it's off the tourist strip yet reasonably close to town and the lake. Very friendly hosts and comfortable units with spa bath.
