Unusual island for Greece due to no cars, motorbikes allowed—we loved it. (Donkeys and mules carry heavy loads) Small city of Idra totally walkable. Fantastic small restaurants there especially a block or so away from the port. Expect to pay more for water taxis to get to other parts of the island. Be sure to visit nearby cultural-art focused centers/museums. 2-3 days max unless you want quiet and privacy to write your novel or compose music. Clothing and souvenir shops are much more expensive than 10 islands we have visited over the years. No airport also keeps tourist # lower than other islands. We saw many families with young children, couples of all ages, and single travelers taking in the island’s beauty. There are no beautiful sandy beaches to enjoy, though. Mandraki, the one sandy beach had dull brown sand, super calm water and appeared to be “owned” by a 5-star resort. There were no signs that this beach was public. But you can go through the resort gate and buy something to eat or drink. It’s 2km NE of the port. The walking path is paved and has beautiful seaside views, including the large golden Apollo wind-spinner. Very romantic island.

This was a great place to visit in April for a quiet and relaxing vacation. There were plenty of tourist in the port area but we didn’t see many people in on the various walking trails on the island.
The beaches were small but beautiful. It was a little windy but the temperature was just right in the mid-day sun.
There were several topless bathers at the various beaches and few children.
The beaches have lots of slippery round rock near the shore so it is difficult to walk into the water. The water was clear and cool and the waves were mild.
I didn’t think much of the dining options in Hydra so we purchased fresh produce at the various grocers near the port.
The tap water is sourced from desalination plants so make sure to get plenty of bottled water (to drink) from the local grocery stores.
They really do utilize donkeys to carry heavy loads from the port. They often leave a mess on the walkways so make sure to watch your step.
The island has beautiful inland views and ocean views. The elevation change is mild so it is easy to take long walk through the various trails.
We had no trouble traveling to and from the island. The port is small so it is easy to find your ferry.
We loved our stay in Hydra. It was just the relaxing trip that we were seeking.

Fun island to explore. No cars allowed!
Fun island to explore. No cars allowed! We only had1 night there due to our itinerary, so this fit the bill due to close proximity to Athens. Had a great sunset dinner at Sunset Grill. Tour of the Lazaros Koundouriotis Mansion was awesome, as was home of artist Tetsis.

Hydra is a wonderful place for scenery-gazing and long quiet walks (soundtrack: goat bells, cocks crowing and the occasional donkey bray) - past the monasteries, to the peak of Mount Eros, or across and a scramble down to Limnioniza Beach which we had entirely to ourselves... Our two best meals were both at Techne, where the food is technically accomplished, harmonious and subtle. Jeff Koons' Apollo Wind Spinner at the Deste Project Space Slaughterhouse is a fun diversion on the road to Mandraki. And the many cats seem by and large in good health and well tended thanks to Hydra Ark.

Charming island in a 2 hour ferry ride from Piraeus. Lots of waterside cafes and other restaurants in the center. Nice easy walks along the water, or steeper hikes up the hillside. Many shops. A good place for relaxing.

What I liked the most is that there were no cars, you can go everywhere on foot, very picturesque, quite, the people are friendly and polite, the food was great a bit expensive in elegant restaurants though.
I would like to go again!
The hotel is located in the port area. Our room had an awesome view of the port. There was also a rooftop area where we had breakfast. The breakfast was great and the view from there was amazing. I believe the rooftop area could be accessed during the day. We were only on Hydra overnight so we were not able take advantage of that. Next time we will definitely stay more than 1 night. The staff was also very helpful with beach and restaurant recommendations.
This is an excellent hotel if you are looking for somewhere to stay on a budget in Hydra. The rooms are simple but very clean and well-maintained. The breakfast is the star, different every day and cooked with various types of food. The owners are really helpful and even arranged for someone to meet us at the ferry as there were a few of us arriving at 8pm when it was already dark, which could have made it a bit difficult to find the hotel.
Breakfast is phenomenal! It changes every day, and there's a ton of variety. One day we had olives, tomatoes, marmalade, a special omelette, sautéed mushrooms, juice, tea, coffee, bread, and two traditional Greek desserts. Another day included croissants and another type of dessert with a yogurt and pistachio parfait. All delicious, and in a fantastic open courtyard in front of the hotel!
The room is located very close to the harbor and you don't have to carry the luggage very far. The location is ideal to visit the nearby restaurants, bars and shops. The owner if very polite, helpful and flexible in arrival times. They even turned on the water heater and A/C so I could have a hot shower upon arrival. Hotel Glaros is my prefered accomodation in Hydra.
Staying on Hydra was like a dream and the Phaedra Hotel was such a beautiful place - a bit back from the port so very very quiet with beautiful little streets all around, possibility to walk up to the hills behind the town, very close to all the restaurants and shops. Hilda was so friendly, welcoming, helpful with lots of advice and support during our stay.
Great location just steps away from the port. Our room was on the back side of the hotel and was very comfortable and quiet. There is a great self service kitchen for coffee, tea, and juice in the morning with the nicest balcony overlooking the port. Wonderful views and George, the proprietor, is very nice and helpful making sure you have a great stay.
Historic and beautiful hotel, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the decor is traditional and beautiful. We arrived at the hotel before check-in time, but they prepared a room for us. Breakfast in the beautiful courtyard was wonderful. The staff were very helpful and friendly. It was a wonderful stay at Hydra, thank you for everything.
We loved Hydra and Hotel Filena was nice and quiet, close to the harbour, with very friendly and helpfull staff. Thank your Rebecca. The room was really nice with airco, a fridge, a good bed and nice bathroom. We could makd our own tea and coffee. Free wifi. Our luggage was kept after checkout to be picked up before our ferry left. Perfect!
Room was great and the staff was always available to help and very friendly. The location was wonderful, but on Google and Apple Maps it appears closer to the port than it really is by quite a distance. Not the hotel's fault, but just a good thing to note if it can be changed.
We loved everything in Hydra Icons. Starting with Ioannis support and gentleness, and ending with a beautiful hotel, super comfortable room, with daily cleaning service, great views, an artistic touch and, cherry on top, the sweetest cat of the island - Gina.
Staff were superb. Really helpful and friendly from the date of booking to departure. Hotel was quaint and idyllic set around half way up the hill out of Hydra Port. Lovely room with self-catering facilities if needed.
Very nice cosy boutique hôtel, well situated in Hydra. An exceptionnal welcome, by Yannis, who recommended us the best adress for drink, lunch, dinner and beach. We have spent a wonderful time there
The courtyard with the lemon tree and plants was a wonderful gathering place with a lovely breeze. It felt like a bit of old world Greece with the wooden ceilings and white stucco with blue pots.
The location and the facility is great. I have stayed in several Hydra Hotels and this is one of the most professional. The rooms are comfy with luxurious bathrooms. We will be back next summer.
