Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United States of AmericaThere wasn't much we didn't like. As Americans we felt like we were being fretted over, but I guess that's how a stay at a Ryokan is supposed to be.
The staff treated us so well. The room and private onsen were beautiful. The dinner was the best thing we ate in Japan, and we got to try a lot of unique food we didn't see elsewhere in Japan.

AustraliaThe attention to detail was amazing. We were also given a lift to the hakone shrine which was amazing. My friend left something in the van, we had no phone number to contact the hostel so my friend walked back and they kindly gave him another lift to the shrine.

United States of AmericaNothing!
Impeccable service from beginning to end. We felt like we were treated like royalty! The private onsen in our room was amazing. And the food, both the kaiseki dinner and breakfast, was so delicious and beautifully prepared. We also really liked this part of Hakone, next to Lake Ashi, where we could walk/run along the lake and see the views of Mt. Fuji and the Hakone Shrine. Our stay was just the relaxation and pampering we needed after busy active days in Kyoto and Osaka!

United States of AmericaNothing. It was one of the best stays we’ve ever experienced.
From the moment we checked on and spotted Mt Fuji while sipping tea in the reception room, we knew this was going to be a one-of-a-kind experience. The staff are so kind and attentive, the rooms are huge and beautifully designed, the cuisine is amazing and bountiful, and our private in-room onsen facing a meditation garden was something out of a dream. Best of all was our host, who served us meals in our room. She was an absolute delight who clearly took pride in her duties. When we left she kept waving and thanking us until our car was out of sight. This was truly a perfect ryokan experience.

Hong KongSlightly dense for an onsen resort, privacy issue is a bit bothering which you could see other rooms at your window and even at your in-room private onsen (there are curtains though), guests from other rooms could see you on your pathway to your private in-room onsen, or even could gain access through a common garden to your onsen even though there's signage reminding forbidden entry to the garden. Location is remote with an almost-one-hour bus-ride from the train station, while the check-in time starts from 3pm but "practically ends" at 5pm (the cut-off time to meet in order to enjoy the dinner included in the half-board package). The dinner could be made better with a larger portion and variety of food.
Cozy. Quiet. Relaxing. Perfect customer services offered by the staff. Interior design is a great combination and balance of traditional appearance and modern facilities.

GermanyIt is a wonderful traditional ryokan, just bellow Mt Fuji. Amazing garden, five-star food quality, and most of all, extremely nice staff. Two onsens, you can try both as they change man/woman twice a day. They also have a private one, but didn't try.

We were attended to by Sabina and she was amazing! From beginning to end we were comfortable and taken care of. The onsens were beautiful, clean, and very serene. The gardens with the koi were so tranquil. The food was amazing and delicious. Being immediately greeted with matcha was amazing! Our room was immaculate and we had a great view of Mt. Fuji! I recommend this place to anyone and we will be back.

SwitzerlandFirst I had to admit that we were late for 15mins to check out our room. This was normally not a problem in other countries but I couldn't tell whether it was a problem because the staff/hotel were very time sensitive or just because we were foreigners or just because we didn't look wealthy and spend much. The lady serving our room was super kind but the lady in the reception was very much a different person by the time we checked out.She made a first call at around 5min after checking out time and I answered we were on our way, and I had to hurry everything. I should have asked whether we could pay a bit to just be more relaxed at check out but I didn't. And when I finally arrived at the reception she pointed me to the clock and said normally we needed to charge sth sth, and I said sure. But she didn't charge in the end which I didn't understand. And it was a heavy rain at that time and we didn't have an umbrella and our room lady said earlier reception should bring us an umbrella. However the lady in the reception didn't feel so. And was very unwilling to move and finally brought an used 711 umbrella and said this one was used and you didn't have to pay. Again i would wonder what was causing such a shifting attitude. Did we not pay enough? Was it simply just because we were not checking out quickly enough? Could she charge a bit late checkout and not cause so much emotional things I would be even happier. This caused quite some trouble for us for our later days traveling in Japan and I had been thinking a lot about what went wrong. We definitely need to be more aware of time and not cause trouble for others but still I feel it was quite disappointing for getting such a kind of service in a supposedly nice traditional hotel.
Everything was awesome except for the check out.

Beautiful hotel with scenic central garden and garden views from our room. We opted for a room onsen which has stunning views of Mt Fuji, also tried the private onsen which was immaculate. The kaiseki dinner served in the room was absolutely stunning, fine dining in the comfort of your room with very attentive and friendly staff. Would highly recommend for a traditional Japanese Ryokan experience

United States of AmericaThere wasn't anything we didn't like.
We were looking for a traditional Ryokan experience while we visited Tokyo and Kyoto. Navigating between Kyoto and Hakone to get to our stay at Yoshimatsu was very easy since we were able to get information from messaging with Yoshimatsu. We felt our stay exceeded our expectations and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with a view of Mount Fuji, beautiful gardens, a friendly welcome with matcha tea and sweet, the room(s) were beautiful, the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were amazing, the massage and onsen relieved the 12-mile walks and sore muscles from Kyoto sightseeing. Thank you and much appreciation to the staff and booking, and navigation help from Yoshimatsu. We would return and highly recommend it!

United Arab EmiratesOur stay at Yoshimatsu was excellent. Their rooms are very spacious, and ours had a private outdoor onsen which was gorgeous. The staff was welcoming and extremely courteous. The kaseki dinner and breakfast were very rich and portion were generous. Even though our palates were not accustomed to some of the dishes, it is an experience that everyone must try. They have a beautiful common garden, with a direct view of Mt. Fuji. Location was great, just a few minutes away from Lake Ashino.

United States of AmericaA shuttle from the train station would be a bonus because it is not the easiest place to get to, but, what is really needed are more clear directions on the website for getting to the property. There were a couple of different routing options available, but one was much simpler (not requiring a train transfer) for no additional expense; however, this wasn't clear on the information provided by the hotel.
This was the most beautiful property at which we stayed in our 2 weeks traveling around Japan and I only wish we had had at least 3 nights. Everything was gorgeous and the service was excellent. We had a room with our own onsen and it was a real treat! Walking around the property and the surrounding area, along with beautiful views of Mt. Fuji made this part of our trip extra special. Would love to stay again someday!

United KingdomNothing!! But just to note there is a corkage fee if you bring your own alcohol, and you have to pay for anything you drink there. we had brought alcohol but we didn’t drink it & instead had a really lovely bottle of Japenese sparkling wine from the ryokan (we then spent the rest of our time in Japan trying to find a bottle but couldn’t.. so that might be once in a lifetime too!!)
From the moment we arrived we felt so well looked after. We had a garden room with its own onsen which we chose as my husband has tattoos. It was even better than the pictures. The kaiseki was the best food we’ve ever had. The service was also amazing…We really were waited on like a king & queen. We actually slept so well (too well, woke up to breakfast arriving!). This was a real honeymoon splurge but for what we got, we feel it was amazing value for money. If you’ve got a hotel budget, I really recommend splashing out on this then going cheap elsewhere! This was our highlight of Japan. A real once in a lifetime experience.
