Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. CanadaI would have preferred less quantity of food and higher quality. It was good but not excellent.

United States of AmericaNot a thing!
An exceptional, classic onsen ryokan. The onsen was very clean and the mineral water was heavenly, with small outdoor bath and cold water bath, too! The service was excellent, with friendly, attentive staff from the minute we arrived to our departure from the ryokan. We had half board, with amazing dinner and equally wonderful traditional breakfast. The decor of the ryokan was museum quality, with rooms with artifacts and cool art pieces. Beautiful flower arrangements everywhere you looked. The room itself was comfortable with a sitting area with view of the garden. Futons were laid out for us, and very cozy and comfortable. This was the 5th time we have stayed at this onsen ryokan and plan to return many more times!

SingaporeToo far from the city. Distance was not the main problem but the fact that there was only one bus to the city and back each day. The bus ride takes about 40 minutes each way. While the food was good, it was served in a rush with dishes coming one after another very quickly so that before you finished one another one or two had arrived and they quickly turned cold. Most other ryokans will serve you the next dish after you had finished the one before you. All these were minor issues which did not detract from a good stay. What really ruined our experience were really uncultured and inconsiderate guests. Three German-speaking men went into the onsen bath without first washing themselves. Same with a group of Italian-speaking women. This despite the fact that there were instructions laid out on the table in the room on how to use the onsen bath. The instructions were also given at the time of checking in when the staff showed guests where the baths were. Even more ridiculously idiotic were two Italian-speaking women who brought their camera mobile phones into the onsen bath when all women there were totally undressed. You don't need instructions to know that this would be inappropriate unless you were mentally challenged. My wife had to keep a constant watch on their phones to make sure she was not inadvertently filmed. When she was on her way out of the bath she noticed one woman and her phone had gone unaccounted for. It was not clear where she gone with her camera phone, while still in the bath. Another German woman (she was heard declaring where she was from) opened the woman's changing room door to speak to her husband standing just outside the door. My wife was on her way out of the bath and was about to walk fully unclothed into the changing area when she noticed the door ajar with a man at the door speaking to his wife. After speaking to her husband she closed the door and my wife walked into the changing room to go to the toilet.
Good authentic traditional ryokan hospitality with great service and wonderfully prepared meals. Staff were polite as is customary in Japan and very helpful.

I really liked the dinner. It was super delicious and a really unique experience. The meal had like 10 different courses and we were offered different drink selections as well. It really felt like the full authentic Japanese meal experience that we were looking for. We also really enjoyed the onsen, it was awesome to be able to have that experience. They were really accommodating to me as well since I have tattoos. I thought that I wouldn't be allowed to go in, but they told us it was no problem.

This place was awesome. We were looking for a place that looked traditional and this one definitely exceeded our expectations. The facility itself looks like a museum, with exhibitions of old weapons and tools in the aisles and windows on the beautiful gardens in the back. The booking included dinner and breakfast and both were amazing. The staff was also super kind and helpful, in the morning they even escorted us to the bus stop in front of the hotel and greeted us when leaving.

CanadaThere are no negatives.
Motoyu Ishiya is a 230 year old hotel just outside of the historic city of Kanazawa. The property itself is stunning, the photos do not do this place justice. It is a very spiritual place where you can’t help but feel at peace. The staff are exceptional and accommodate English speakers to the best of their ability. The meals included are very traditional and require an open-mindedness from foreigners. I look forward to returning in the future.

AustraliaMy only feedback would be that there is no fireplace, and everywhere but our room was quite cold to wander around and relax in the evening. The breakfast Kaiseki meals were too much for us, but still lovely.
The onsens were gorgeous and clean. Water was so lovely, and I loved the cold plunge pool. The staff were amazing, just so kind and helpful! Kaiseki meals were meticulously prepared and presented and just delicious! Highly recommend

AustraliaIt's a little out of town and the buses aren't too frequent, so you need to be organised with when you want to go out exploring, or take taxis (which are quite cheap).
The meals were fantastic and the service was exceptional. The onsen was lovely and clean and very relaxing. Dining in front of a Noh stage was particularly special.

United States of AmericaThe only recommendation is to add drinking water in the onsen area. There are vending machines outside of the onsen, but you need to dress up, go back to the room to get money to just buy water. This is not only inconvenient, but kind of dangerous because people can get dehydrated and dizzy from the very hot bath. Please take a water bottle with you. And as a note for the hotel owners, consider providing a cooler with free water inside the onsen area. Otherwise, you are impeccable!
This is an incredible experience! Authentic 230 years old ryokan owned for 9 generation of this family. I've never seen more polite, attentive and helpful staff than this. They would take care of your luggages from the taxi and will load it back to the taxi when you leave, clean the wheels, anticipate your needs. The dinner is a fantastic 10+ Japanese dining experience, where you can try a variety of local traditional dishes. You can purchase alcohol too if you like. The 100-year old Noh theater stage is unique, and the owner can give you a tour if you request it. The garden is well kept and beautiful. The ryokan has many little pockets and areas to relax, read a book, enjoy the views on the garden. Quiet and relaxing. You can reach it by taxi, or by train/bus + a short taxi from the local station; trust me it's worth a ride. The ryokan is filled with little details, like ceramics and art pieces, antique artifacts like from a museum. The onsen water has many healing properties (there is a certificate by the entrance with the water evaluation summary). It's coffee colored and considered to be 'beauty spa'. Men and women are separate; no access to the outdoors, but you can see the view on the forest during the day time. There are little massaging machines for feet and back available to the guests for free. The room is traditional style, with all the essentials, amazing green tea. Very impressive experience overall.
