Room could have been cleaner. Carpet needed replacing. Lots of stains on it.

Fabulous central location. Lovely old building with atmospheric bar area. Great cooked breakfast.

Room was adequate and very basic. Nowhere to plug in phone charger unless unplugging other things such as TV, light or kettle. The shower room was tired and there was no pull handle on the shower door - making it difficult to close. There was black mould on the ceiling above the shower. Windows in need of a lick of paint. The place could do with a good makeover.

The breakfast was good (although not as large as the photo in the hotel's welcome pack would lead you to believe). The bar area was cosy and reasonable - although looking tired.

The housekeeping ……….. we didn’t have any bed making or clean cups in the bedroom and had to ask for personal soap, the property is very very old so the sloping floors were acceptable and quaint. The kettle provided was large and wouldn’t fit under the tap.

The breakfasts were excellent, beautifully cooked and exactly as requested

Although breakfast was lovely, the service was a little lacking. I requested fried bread instead of fried egg, our servers response: 'we don't do that' then an awkward silence, the glass of water we requested never arrived, we received the second helping of toast we requested, but no butter or spreads was brought with it or offered and we did not see her or anyone else for the remainder of our time in the dining room.

Very olde worlde, lots of character. Room was lovely and clean. The sloping floor was a talking point. Included free parking was a major bonus.

The bathroom needs better ventilation as the damp had damaged the floor and was causing some mould to appear in the shower cubicle.

A lovely 15th century coaching inn near the cathedral. The bar serves cask ale and within a short stroll there are plenty of good other pubs and restaurants.

Had to wait a little too long, no other real issues with breakfast. We requested a room with the least steps, but initiallly we were given a small room at the top of the building. The hotel staff were responsive and offered us a much better room afterwards so the issue was resolved. Suggest staff check the requests made by clients on the booking form.

Very good well cooked and plenty to eat. Staff good and receptive to needs

Car park had a 'Full' sign up when I arrived. This was actually to make sure that there was room for guests - so that was a good thing, but it would have been helpful to have known this in advance as I had to find another car park (and then - had to go and fetch my car when I got to reception to find that there were actually spaces). Thankfully the fare for the other car park was only £2.

Young lady on reception helped me out with car park issue. All staff were friendly and professional. The hotel is in a good location for St Albans city centre. Obviously has a lot of character with all the wood paneling etc. Breakfast was of good quality. Everything in room was very clean.

Paid 5x £12 for breakfasts but the two main items we asked for were unavailable, no kippers-on-the-bone (we were told there must have been an old menu in the bedroom) and no American fluffy pancakes (grandsons very disappointed with the French toast alternative). Apart from breakfast value everything else was good.

Historic building with sloping floors, winding stairwells and trippy stairs (loved them 👍) and low doorways 🤕, excellent shower, good beer, friendly staff! Would definitely stay here again 👍
