The food was great - I am in awe of what the chef, Douglas, was able to create in a small galley kitchen powered for a sort amount of time by a generator. Delicious and great portions. I loved the huts on the private beach, each with their own separate toilet&shower hut. The beds were great. Drinking water was replenished daily and I never ran out. Drink prices were reasonable when compared to other places in Vanuatu. The people were delightful - a massive thank you to the delightful Linda who took me snorkelling. The paths were clearly marked and easy to walk on, they were raked over regularly so they remained well kept. I relaxed, snorkelled, relaxed again, did a bunch of reading while sunning myself. It's important to note that you should take reef shoes as the beaches are coral so will hurt if you don't have them.

Information on what to do on the island once we got there was not exactly abundant. Normally I would have researched this myself but this booking was a last-minute one to replace the holiday I had planned in Tanna but couldn't get to. There were dive suits but no one mentioned going diving. There was a walk to a secluded beach but I only knew about that from another traveller - apparently they can give you a packed lunch to take with you and you get one of the dogs to show you the way, no one on the island mentioned it until I said I had already tried to get there but had to turn back as it was a really difficult and painful walk for me - I have had bad knee surgery, I also had a problem with rats getting into the hut. There are heaps of repairs around the resort that need to be made, one of them is the deterioration of the woven reeds in Fare2, the hut I stayed in. After the first night, one of the dogs took it upon itself to sleep right at the opening and so prevented the rats from coming in again. I know it's a jungle island and wildlife is to be expected, but the accommodation needs to be maintained.

  • Vanuatu Beachfront Apartments

    Port Vila, Vanuatu

    Average review score: 8.5

We stayed in Apartment 2. From our experience, the condition of the apartment was good. Other guests had previously left reviews indicating the beds had threadbare sheets and had experienced noise from the car park after hours - this did not reflect our experience. The beds are absolutely fine and very comfortable. When we stayed (Wednesday to Sunday) it was very quiet after hours. When our flight was pushed back until late in the evening, the manager allowed a very late check out at no additional charge.

There were a few discrepancies with our food & drinks tab - but this was sorted out without any fuss.

This is an amazing, vintage-style lodging. Everything was super clean, functioning and soundproof. The apartment is self contained and has everything you need for your stay in Port Vila. Our apartment was facing the water, with a beautiful view of the harbour (and the road below). Despite having the road below, it was VERY sound proof and we didn't hear any traffic. The owner, Beth, is wonderful. We sincerely appreciated her kind hospitality -- felt like visiting family!

  • Alofa Beach Bungalows

    Tanna Island, Vanuatu

    Average review score: 8.3
    • Positive section of review

Alofa, as its name suggests, is located on the beach and is near local villages. The accommodation is basic, but has its own special charm. Our local hosts, Glen and his sister, were very kind and helpful. While the menu options were limited, Glen's fried chicken and chips were quite decent. We really enjoyed swimming at the local beach where the locals swim. More luxurious resorts offer more comfort, but we felt we experienced the real Tanna staying at Alofa.

Our family group initially stayed in bungalows 2 and 3. Bungalow 2: On our first night my wife was awoken by a rat dragging her reading glasses across the floor; later the same evening the rat was found making off with a packet of biscuits. My wife then joined our children in Bungalow 3. We subsequently discovered that rat was living inside the wall lining. Due to the rat issue, my wife and I eventually moved to Bungalow 4 when it became available - but not after the rat had eaten holes through my shorts as I had (foolishly) left a biscuit wrapper in my pockets. The cats that jump on the table during meal times were quite annoying - apparently, they are there to keep the rats out of the kitchen, which makes sense.

  • Whispering Palms - Absolute Beachfront Villas

    Port Vila, Vanuatu

    Average review score: 9
    • Positive section of review

Location was great, absolute beach front with a coral reef very close to the shore. The provided kyacks and snorkelling gear made it easy to explore. I onlyvstayed in one of the units (deuxe) but it was fantastic - clean, modern, private and in very good condition. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. I found its location away from the city, but only a 40min drive away was perfect. We rented a car, so we didn't have to use the local taxi.

The property has three units, so they are close together. Layout means there is plenty of privacy in the units, but you can hear the other guests and you are sharing the beach.

The front desk reception and the staff were the friendliest and always willing to help.

The hotel is very sterile. It lacks any energy. It reminds me of the type of buildings that existed in the former Soviet-era -- except with shiny tiles and bright spotlights shining down on the bed. The electricity shuts off every time you leave the room, which means that the in-room refrigerator does not remain cool -- in fact, it smelled as if raw meat had been stored in the refrigerator when we opened it :-( The WORST was that the air conditioning service was turned off for maintenance during an entire 1.5 days of our 2-day stay. Although the hotel management offered a simple fan, that just wanted enough. Vanuatu is a hot and humid location. Humidity is +/- 80-90% and temperatures fluctuate around 30C / 90F -- You NEED Air Conditioning! There was no compensation given. The ONLY redeeming quality was the friendliness of the reception and staff who are local Vanuatu ladies.

Late night noise from the adjoining property. Wifi was horrible. I practically could not do much work. I may think twice before booking Morrings if I visited Port Vila again.
