Team Windketel
Stay in a unique historic building The Windketel is a little freestanding octagonal brick tower in the center of a quiet square in an automobile-free neighborhood. Built in 1897 as part of Amsterdam’s water works, it now contains a luxury apartment for two, furnished with the creations of famous Dutch designers. Furnished with Dutch design After a renovation in 2013, the Windketel was made more sustainable and completely re-furnished, this time with work by several generations of Dutch Designers. We continue to refresh the interior with the work of young and older Dutch designers, just because we enjoy it. Ideally located to explore the city It’s an ideal home base for culture-loving visitors to the city. The Western Gas Works culture park is around the corner and the historic Jordaan neighborhood is only a ten-minute walk away. Tram 5, which goes to all the major museums, stops practically at the door. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the privacy and tranquility of the location, which is protected from traffic on all sides and used mainly by residents of the apartments surrounding the square.
The owners The Windketel is an initiative of the residents of the square where it is located. A number of us live in the Magazijngebouw, a former storage facility of the water works. When we finished converting the facility to residences in 1997, we turned our attention to the little Windketel building it faces. What might it become? We decided to make it a place for temporary residents to enjoy this unique spot in Amsterdam. We established a co-op with ten members and hired architect Paul Westerman, whose ingenious re-design created a 48-square-meter interior. Hotel de Windketel opened for business in 2003. We wish you a lovely time in our little tower on the square!
The Windketel is located in Westerpark, a neighborhood known for its unique park on the site of Amsterdam’s former gasworks, now the location of events ranging from fashion shows and concerts to craft and food markets. There’s always something going on, and that makes this neighborhood the ideal home base for culture-loving visitors. The historic Jordaan neighborhood is only a ten-minute walk away. The neighborhood’s centerpiece is the Westerpark, visible from Hotel de Windketel’s northern windows. The architecture of the gasworks is itself an attraction. All the buildings have been renovated and converted for culture or leisure activities. It’s the site of markets, restaurants, cafes, TV studios, dance venues, cinema’s and theaters. It’s home to many festivals, too, including Amsterdam International Fashion Week and the Holland Festival.
