Haarlem is a wonderful city to stay in as it has the canals, lots of history, good shopping and plentiful restaurants.
The Grotemarkt has the oldest organ in Europe which Mozart played on and Corrie Ten Boom’s house(who hid the Jews in WW2) is better than Anne Franks! The very first museum in the Netherlands is also here-Teylers. The Saturday market is wonderful.
It is only 15 minutes by train back into Amsterdam and you have a better feel of regular Dutch folks in this beautiful town.

First, I really liked Amsterdam.
First, I really liked Amsterdam. But it was really really crowded, even the first week of April. Then, when I got to Haarlem, I realized it was similar to Amsterdam, with all the old world Europe charm, old buildings, & canals, but not the hordes of crazy tourists. I ended up liking Haarlem better than Amsterdam! Even better than Rotterdam, and maybe the Haag (except I only spent a few hours there). Easy to walk everywhere, and I rented a bicycle and rode all the way to the beach and back on easy, nice separated bike paths. Also, the bike riders are not as aggressive as in Amsterdam. So as an American tourist, in my 50s, I felt perfectly comfortable riding my bike all over. Of course, you still need to be hyper aware of oncoming cyclists and cars… also, they had a secure bike garage near the main central Plaza, where you could lock your bike for free, with a guard watching over it. If you left it overnight, you had to pay something. So I was able to lock my eBay inside there while visiting main attractions in the plaza, like the church with the pipe organ.
I will definitely choose this as a base next time, instead of Amsterdam. I considered staying in Leiden too, but never got a chance to go there.

Haarlem is a beautiful safe city with plenty of lovely restaurants and bars. Walking is the best way to get around the city . I would recommend hiring bikes and cycling out to Zaandvort which is completely along a cycle path to a stunning beach. There are plenty of museums and the windmill is worth a visit . There is also a food market in the square on Saturday morning

Haarlem in my opinion is a better place to stay than Amsterdam. It is a more friendly setting. Amsterdam is easy to get to by train and see all the sites. I have been to the Netherlands several times and stayed in Amsterdam and other cities but prefer Haarlem.
In the spring, Haarlem is close to the tulips which are a must see.
It has its own unique tourist attractions.

Haarlem is a beautiful city, a welcome relief from the business of Amsterdam. There are fine museums. We especially enjoyed going on a tour of the windmill. We would have liked to tour the Corrie Ten Boom house, but none were available. Seems pretty exclusive since their website recommends getting reservations three to four months in advance.
The double rooms upstairs are more boutique hotel than boutique hostel, apart from the whole share kitchen / lounge thing that comes with hostels.
The staff are so friendly and they / the owner obviously take great pride in the hostel, it is a charming and well kept space. If most hostels were like this I'd stay in one every time.
So pleased we stayed in Haarlem and not Amsterdam. You can easily visit Amsterdam for the museums etc., but in Haarlem you have the best of it without the tourist crowds.
Rooms were lovely, so comfortable, and quiet. The spa facilities (Sauna and steam room) were excellent. We dined at the hotel a few times and the food was great. Overall, an excellent stay and we would definitely go back. The hotel was a little ways from Haarlem center - but walkable or easy to hop on the bus for two stops (runs every ten minutes or so). And we enjoyed Haarlem so much more than over-priced and over-touristed Amsterdam.
The Riverside Suite is spacious with a great view over a canal with a windmill. Easy walk to town with lots of places to explore, eat, drink and shop. The train station is close by for a quick 15 minute ride into Amsterdam. Monique is very friendly & an excellent host with lots of thoughtful touches and was flexible with our travel arrangements.
Haarlem is a beautiful town and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
We had amazing days at Park 43! Since we didn't want to stay in Amsterdam, we decided on Haarlem and were very lucky with an incredible host, attentive from the first contact. The apartment is excellent, with great accommodations. We spent New Year's Eve there because we wanted some tranquility and it couldn't have been more special. It was an excellent stay, we hope to be able to come back one day!
The room was very nice and the staff friendly and helpful. The bed is comfortable and there is plenty of hot water with a good shower. They serve a very good breakfast. Haarlem is the perfect place to stay and plan day trips to Amsterdam, rent bikes and ride to the National Park and the North Sea. Many good dinner restaurants in Haarlem if you venture beyond the Grotte Martk.
Everything! People were friendly and helpful; building had so much character; loved the calm of Haarlem after busy days in Amsterdam; the food was equally beautiful and delicious; the most comfortable bed I’ve stayed in; huge bathroom for Europe and they pay attention to all of the little details that make the stay even more enjoyable.
For a first time stay at your hotel, my daughter and I were pleasantly surprised by the hotel’s beauty, the comfortable room and the pleasant and helpful staff. The location was a plus.. Exploring Haarlem was so easy from its location. The restaurant served a variety of delicious foods - no need to look for dining elsewhere..
This location was perfect. This was a pre-cruise stay for us, and the first time to Amsterdam. The price was much less than being in the city and it was close to several restaurants and bars to relax after a busy day touring Amsterdam. The train station was within walking distance.
Great location. Haarlem beats Amsterdam as a base and lots of great restaurants, shops and bars within walking distance and good public transport. Especially good for the Keukenhof gardens, if that is your thing. Schipol airport, coast and Leiden also easy to reach.
The hotel, the proximity to the very nice city centre and train station (for the short journey to Amsterdam), friendly staff, excellent breakfasts, comfortable and quiet room, choosing Haarlem instead of Amsterdam as a base. No rain for most of our stay !
Henk and Annemarie were extremely welcoming at the hotel. The rooms were great and the breakfast was lovely. It was a great hotel for our family holiday - easy access to Amsterdam and also an opportunity to see other parts of the country.
basic but clean and efficient - good value, good continental breakfast and good evening bar and food - second visit - great place to be based for visits to Haarlem and Amsterdam using a bike to get around..
This is not in Amsterdam. There is a sister hotel in Amsterdam City Centre that we had intended to book. Booking with this hotel wouldn't switch our reservation to city centre and we're largely unhelpful.
Delicious breakfast, friendly and helpful hosts. Haarlem is the perfect place to stay when visiting Amsterdam because it is cleaner, quieter, safer, cheaper, and perfectly lovely in its own right!
The hotel is in the heart of Haarlem. walking distance to everything! The room was very quiet as it was at the back of the building. breakfast was excellent.
