At the centre of the Mayan Riveria is Playa del Carmen, a playground for hip Europeans and toned-and-tanned Americans. This resort town showcases the renowned white-sand beaches of the Caribbean Coast along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen's powdery white sands are nestled between Cancun to its north, Tulum in the south and the island of Cozumel, 20 km east with its fantastic diving in the nearby Great Maya Reef. Awake from an afternoon nap to take a dip, go snorkelling or deep-sea fishing in the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Playa is an easy choice as a holiday destination with its range of hotels, many first-class restaurants and beachside nightclubs. Quinta Avienda, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist hub and shopping district. For a more authentic Mexico experience, venture outside of the centre to a local cenote (sinkhole) or Mayan ruins in Tulum.
Cruise ships dock in nearby Cozumel and traffic people to the mainland arriving at the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. If the glimmering Caribbean waters are full, then Booking.com has a huge number of hotels with an outdoor swimming pool by the beach.
Don’t go for the beaches. Lots of seaweed and very narrow.
Don’t go for the beaches. Lots of seaweed and very narrow. We found 5th Ave to be a typical tourist trap. Overpriced restaurants and souvenirs. You’ll find better food and a cheaper price a block or two away.

Kinda trashy. I would not take kids there.
Kinda trashy. I would not take kids there. Stay in a resort if you are traveling with kids. Just kind of a raunchy area. Geared more toward adults. We were asked if we wanted cocaine or marijuana often. Inappropriate eateries

IT'S PRETTY 'TOURISTY' BUT WE HAD 2 GOOD MEALS DOWNTOWN. WE FIXED OUR OWN MEALS IN THE CONDO. IT'S GREAT IF YOU LIKE LOUD MUSIC AND LOTS OF PEOPLE. WE PROBABLY WON'T MAKE A SECCOND TRIP THERE. WE LIKE MORE ISOLATED AND CALMER SPOTS.

Beach was small and always crowded.
Beach was small and always crowded. Constant music from various resorts did not make for a peaceful atmosphere.
We did not know what to expect of local area but were put off by all the souvenir vendors who got in our face and hawked their junk which was actually made in China.
We ate at two restaurants in town and one of them was very good.
This will probably be our last visit to Playa del Carmen though. If you don't like feeling like a tourist avoid the place.

First and foremost it is extremely loud at night .
First and foremost it is extremely loud at night . So if you are very close to 5 th avenue expect the noise level to interrupt your sleep.
I don’t recommend driving a car there. It is cluttered to drive and hard to get anywhere. And parking costs and how you can manage them is a joke. Ridiculous.

I was expecting a rustic area but the main strip made you feel like you were in any other tourist zone. Stores such as American Eagle Outfitters, Saphora, Senior Frogs etc. A stark difference from the adjacent streets but it's obvious that tourism provides much of the revenue due to armed police or guards stationed everywhere.
It's a great place if you want to party or even go scuba diving but not if you're expecting a nice rustic experience.

The hotel is amazing and the staff is super friendly and helpful. We were close (2 min walking distance) from the main street in Playa Del Carmen. There's banks, shops and bus station close by, and taxi everywhere.
We spent time by the pool, and I had my share of coconut water there. The pool bar is so convenient.
The staff spoke decent English and we were really happy with the breakfast crew, even tho they are from the restaurant and not the hotel. By the way, breakfast is also worth it, and with so many delicious fruits and food.
We loved our stay at Riviera Maya Suits. Central and right on the action of la quinta avenida! A 5 minutes walk to mamitas beach. We’ll be back ! Maria, our housekeeper is the sweetest and very professional ! Jose the grouds keeper is very friendly, Arturo, was our driver to and from the airport very kind and also very professional, our front desk person ( sorry, I think his name is Jorge) very nice and friendly ! Love Playa del carmen ! Forget all inclusive hotels ! Stay here !
Thank you !
The hotel is positioned perfectly, although it was our first time in Playa del Carmen, we picked absolutely the best location, as everything is close by.
The staff is amazing! Daniela (with whom we communicated via Booking chat) and Vicky (who helped us numerous times at the reception desk) are the best! They were quite resourceful and provided us with all sorts of tips and tricks.
Hotel was perfectly located - close to 5th avenue and close to the beach. Staff was very supportive and always nice. Rooms are super spacious and well maintained (also cleaned everyday). At the roof-top there is a nice pool with sunbeds and cafe, where you can enjoy a tasty breakfast. Absolutelly worth to recomend for holidays in Playa del Carmen
The hotel is really pretty and right In the Center of Playa del Carmen. We loved the room with the balcony and the hammock. There is a possibility to have breakfast on the beach in the beachclub of the hotel!
The staff is really friendly and always willing to help out.
The hotel looks very nice and detailed. The rooms are HUGE and stylish. The breakfast changes everyday and always gives the best options. The rooftop bar and pool are super cool and always full of nice people to talk to. A must go place when in Playa del Carmen.
The room was very clean, modern, and comfortable. Was not aware that there was also a washer and dryer in the room, so that was a bonus. Easy to walk to all of the shops and restaurants, although the restaurant in the hotel was very good and on the beach.
The best hotel I stayed in Playa del Carmen. Very comfortable beds, good working A/C. And veryyyy helpful employees!!!! Also very safe and close to the beach (8 min walk?) and to all shops and cafe’s (1 min walk) but at the same time quiet.
This place is a great value for a beachfront hotel. It's basic but clean and everyone is friendly. There some things out of their control that made this stay uncomfortable but they did try to remedy the situation as best as they could.
This is a lovely small hotel right on the beachfront. Very welcoming, family friendly with sun loungers on the beach. Great staff, always helpful and have time to stop for a chat and give you advice.
Riu Lupita is one of the best hotels in Playa del Carmen. Food, drinks, activities, and the experience, in general, are worth the cost. Try to don't miss booking the dinner in the steakhouse.
It’s right on the beach and one block from all the shops and restaurants on 5th and it’s next door to an amazing restaurant. The outside of this hotel really is quite charming.
