If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.
People are family-oriented, friendly, and supportive. You can drink the water and use US electric devices. Go, you will love it.

We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't.
We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't. The hotel was good but there was nothing special about the city and we would have preferred to be back in Alajuela where we stayed on the first night. There was much less traffic there and lots of different birds in the trees. The park in San Jose only had grackles.

There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area.
There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area. Three places to recommend: the Jade Museum, the Post Office Museum and Lankester Botanical Garden on the road to Paraiso. The Jade Museum is a revelation - it is in a new building and has a wonderful exhibition about the Pre-Colombian inhabitants of Central America. Don't be put off by its title - it is not a museum of dusty cabinets full of jade objects. Just to the right of the entrance to the Central Post Office is a museum with displays of various themes - space, calypso, biodiversity - illustrated with stamps from all over the world. The Lankester Gardens is a gem. It's a centre for the study of orchids so visit at the right time of year, e.g. March, when many are in flower. The gardens are beautifully laid out and very well cared for.

Great city.
Great city. Nice and friendly people with plenty of places to visit, especially their natural parks. Food is good, and the water is safe to drink in the city. Although the locals warned me to be cautious but I felt safe.

We were in San Jose for 2 days; meeting a group coming in from the USA to walk The Camino de Costa Rica so met our outfitter and guide. We visited the Jade Museum and would have gone to the Gold Museum if we had time. We did a long walk in the city to visit a famous hotel ( Grano de Oro). It's a busy city during the day and we were warned not to walk alone at night.
The rooms are HUGE! Comfortable beds and everything super clean. Located in downtown San Jose within walking distance to local museums, shopping strips and central market square. Hotel is located next to a casino that has great food at reasonable prices. Upon checking in, we received tokens for complementary drinks at the casino bar. Breakfast was good. Front desk staff went above and beyond to help us schedule our Covid test on a Sunday. Our room had a microwave, mini fridge, coffeemaker and even a stove top.
good value for San José /Costa Rica during high season. Basic accommodation amenities , a bar of soap and towel per person. We stayed 3 different times in transit between San José to different areas of the country - ie Manuel Antonio, guanacaste, Caribbean . Each time a different room . The upper floors are prettier with old world feel and wooden floors , The reception staff are young friendly and helpful . The hotel could do with a maintenance refresh as it’s got some great historic feeling about it .
Santo Tomas is a historic jem in the heart of San Jose. Once you step into the lobby you can see the detail of the furnishing and finishings have been well preserved. The rooms are comfortable and there are several lounge areas throughout where you can relax and mingle with fellow travelers. The pool and hot tub provide relief after a day of exploring the downtown sites, all within walking distance. The (provided) breakfast is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful.
Best hostel in Costa Rica hands down. 4 weeks spent here overall..Wonderful family, I wish I had their love /hoapitality back home. Its quiet, lovely communal area, wonderful breakfast. Great shower, lovely guests. Its awesome. I love it, booked an extra 3 nights. I'm easily pleased but this is the de-facto place to stay I'm San Jose should you be looking for a dorm bed. David is just the best, lovely wife and children. I'll miss it terribly. Thank you David and co.
The apartment is in a shady area of San Jose and shall be chosen only in the case where somebody wants to use the public bases for an overnight stay.
We used uber to go the bus terminal to avoid any possible issues by walking.
This hotel also provides 2-4-8 hour stays which makes it super noisy at night and also the sound proofness is pretty bad.
For its purpose it's OK to rest for a couple of hours.
Stayed in a twin room. Bed was a good size and comfortable. Aircon in the room was good and not very loud. Shower pressure was a little on the weak side. Hairdryer was good. Nice to have a pool at the hotel. Had breakfast and one dinner here. Both were nice. There is a big park nearby. Took ubers to the restaruant area of San Jose and to the airport. Much cheaper than getting taxis.
We booked this hotel last minute for just the one night, but we were very glad that we did. For the price, the hotel is very well equipped and the staff were very friendly. Breakfast was also very good (one of the best banana breads I’ve ever had in fact). We were glad to be in downtown for anyone unsure which area to stay in.
great hotel with lovely swimming pool area in a safe and quite area of San Jose
(only 15 min away from the airport). My daughter forgot her airpods but luckily the cleaning lady found them. Elisa from the reception arranged a courier to our next accommodation! Again many thanks for the swift action.
Hotel Novo was perfect for a short stopover in San José. I needed to be near Terminal 7-10 and the Tuasa stop, and Hotel Novo couldn't have been more convenient. The room was very comfortable—good bed, A/C, and hot water. There were good shops, cafés, restaurants, and more in the surrounding area.
Unique, one of a kind hotel. Awesome views of the entire San Jose valley from all rooms.
Pool, library/video room, sauna, and jacuzzi with a view of the city!
Nice kitchen. 15 minute walk to grocery store, restaurants and downtown Escazu.
Good internet, friendly and helpful staff.
Very nice hotel in a quiet area from San José. Super friendly staff and amazing breakfast. There are some restaurants and supermarkets in the area, but be aware that this is not the area where San José's nightlife is happening (which, for me is a plus).
Location is perfect for san jose, within walking distance to downtown. We were surprised when the airport transfer (arranged brilliantly by the hotel), got to Park Inn so quickly.
Beds and rooms really comfortable
.Always the close proximity to the Tracopa Bus Station, of which I enjoy walking to & from whenever staying at the Radisson. The hotel is also in walking distance to downtown San Jose..
A very relaxed, attractive & comfortable hotel in a quiet part of San Jose, but just a short taxi ride to the downtown sites. The staff were exceedingly friendly & the food was good.
Super friendly staff. Very helpful!! Breakfast was great. Location is safe and in a good area to shop. Bus station in front of the hotel to go downtown. I stayed for four nights!
Good location near downtown San Jose for much cheaper than downtown hotels. Easy to walk to museums and restaurants. Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Onsite bar/restaurant.
